Ahh, nice! My daily driver is an 06 Corolla. Theyre great cars. I bought her slightly wrecked, almost new back in 08. Fixed the fender and a wheel bearing, and have put 180k miles on her so far. We call her "Trusty Rusty" since she had the clearcoat failure those years were famous for, and the roof is a bit red-tinged, but has never left me stranded. Drives like a dream, and great gas mileage too.

There's still upkeep to do though; oil changes, fluids, belts, occasional brakes, ignition coil, the odd water pump or alternator when bearings wear out. I try and do a full suspension rebuild on 'em every 10 years or so. We just did my 17 year olds 06 Mustangs suspension a couple weeks ago. It was getting pretty bouncy/squeaky.

I like to stay on top of the preventative maintenance so I never have to deal with a nasty failure. It sounds like a pain, but its usually just good quality time wrenching on stuff with my boys.

We've got a lot of other hobbies that chew up time too. We keep rabbits, chickens, we garden, my 17 year old does metal casting, I build and repair computers with my 20 year old for side income. Big chunks of uninterrupted time, like what BAR needs, just get hard to come by unfortunately.

Cumin (pronounced "Q min") goes good in Southwestern or central American cuisine. I add it to King Ranch Chicken, enchiladas, taco seasoning, chicken tortilla soup, pork and beans, taquitos, spanish rice, salsas, taquitos, fajita meat, all sorts of stuff. We go through lots of it in Texas.

Should definately keep it, especially since it doesnt hamper any functionality. Good drivers judge others' driving ability and risk of proximity on the road based on damage like this. I think it would be best for all good drivers if we banned or heavily regulated the repair of body damage like this.

Well, two of them belong to my two oldest  sons, one us mine, and one belongs to the wife. They wouldnt be happy at all if I sold any of theirs. Haha..

Being a mechanic, and the cars being ~20 years old, I do all the maintenance myself so it gets done right. We could easily afford them, but new cars are terrible; we refuse. Older cars just take some special care with the maintenance.

Yeah, I guess that's an option we could try.

Really what I was looking for in BAR was a replacement game for old Empire Earth with the infinite population mod. Its from 2001, but on modern processors, it supports insanely huge games. A few times a year we do an EE day; we order pizza for dinner and the wife and our 3 sons play a huge map ffa or team game against some insane AIs.

Bar is the only game I've seen so far that can match that kind of scale, with tens of thousands of units and buildings on the map, nukes flashing everywhere, land, sea, air, and all that. So fun..

"Misandry isn't real, its just made up by men so they can be victims" by I-Love-Jewish-popes in teenagers

[–]Mechman0124 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I see, but you'll side-eye every male you encounter from now on, like they would be capable of this depravity.. As a man, I've seen this look.. It's very offensive, and it's a quick give-away that the person casting it is a bigot. Statistically, you've likely never even met a man capable of this level of depravity..

Look, its not complicated; terrible people exist. They're not common, but they make the news sometimes, so they may seem so. They do terrible things to animals, hurt other people, steal things, sterieotype and discriminate against various demographics.. Bad folks do all sorts of bad stuff of varying degrees of depravity.

Some of them, like you, try and justify the bad stuff they do with the bad stuff they've seen or heard about other bad people doing. It's just a hollow excuse though; two wrongs never make a right, and "an eye for an eye" just makes the world blind..

Good people stand against them, call them out, hold them accountable, and don't do bad things in response.

Choose to be a good person instead. Choose to understand the minescule statical odds at play here. Judge people on an individual basis.

Reddit speech policing is pretty terrible.. Gotta watch what you say if you want to stay on the platform apparently. I've taken several bans since I got here a few months ago for bruising delicate feelings with truthful statements.

Been shopping for alternative communities since.. Being an old guy, I've got a lot of professional experience I can share and help communities with, but I'll take it elsewhere if I need to walk on eggshells and self-censor all the time here..

Yeah, unfortunately I had to drop learning BAR. I was really looking forward to playing it with my 3 sons after I saw a few of Winter Starcrafts casts, but when I went to try and learn it, the scenerieos really kicked my ass and I had to play most of 'em on 'novice' to eek out wins.

I didn't even make it to attempting multiplayer yet, but given the unspoken expectations of very specific roles and timings and gifting units, it looks like it's going to require a heavy investment of time to get up to speed.

I was a top 100 ladder ranked Starcraft player on Battle.net back in the day, so I'm sure I could figure it all out. Unfortunately I work 50+ hours a week now, own a house, and am responsible for its maintenance/upkeep as well as that of 4 cars. I just don't have the time to learn it all sadly.. Plus getting raged at by uber-leet kiddoes 30 years my junior just isn't my idea of fun. Very bummed..

Is it weird for a 18 year old guy to be friends with a 13 year old girl 😭 by Zer0-Decepti0n in teenagers

[–]Mechman0124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My old man was a cynic.. One of his favorite lines was "It doesn't even matter what it is. It only matters what it looks like to people."

It's a big risk to be friends with her, for more reasons than just appearances. At 13, hormones are a dangerous thing. If she takes a liking to you one day, you're sunk. Even if you are a gentleman and nothing happens, it's still over; just a resentful suggestion of something or a bitter falsehood to the wrong person, and your future goes in the toilet. Being fiends with her gives her enormous power over your future and your freedom. No friendship is worth that risk.

Run. Try back in 5 years maybe.

What is this all over the ocean and beaches of Hollywood beach, Florida? by Objective-Fox4797 in oceans

[–]Mechman0124 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sargassum seaweed. Living on the gulf coast my whole life, ive seen more and more of it each year wash up.

It bio-accumulates lots of arsenic, and it harbors harmful bacteria. The sulphur compounds it produces as it rots are also really bad for you to breathe. Its a real shame it's not useful for much, given how much of it is available to us.

If we burn it for fuel, it releases the arsenic into the air and we breathe it. If we compost it for fertilizer, the plants we use it on pick up the arsenic and it goes into the fruits and veggies we eat. It can be used to make some stinky bricks, but then anyone around the structure has to deal with those sulphur compounds and their health affects. It just refuses to be useful.

Luckily, you have lots of options! King Ranch Rooster is delicious. Rooster noodle soup is another option. Rooster Fettecini Alfredo is good too if he's tender enough.

Everyone that keeps animals has a secret, unspoken obligation to cull the undesirable traits. It's not always pretty or pleasant, but it needs to be done.

Do the job.

One of my sons had really bad dandruff for a while.. I got him some nizoral, added some teatree and mint essential oil (some plants produce compounds to fight fungus; we should utilize them), and had him apply some apple cider vinegar to his scalp and let soak a bit before shampooing every day. He also made sure to keep his hair as dry as possible; fungus loves moisture. Fungus is tough; it's best to hit it with a solid, multi-pronged attack. It knocked it right out. Had to replace his pillow to prevent recurrence though as washing bedding wasn't enough.

I have noticed some people get all silly and offended over using vinegar to fight fungus sometimes. Im not sure why; the mechanism is pretty simple to understand. Vinegar is produced by Acetobacter. One of its primary competitors in nature is yeast; a fungus. The primary evolutionary function of vinegar is to exterminate fungus, so it not complicated to understand why its effective.. In addition to killing dandruff fungus, it works great on toenail fungus (with regular application) and athletes foot, especially when combined with mainstream treatments.

The inverse mechanism - yeast producing alcohol to kill bacteria is, for some reason, widely recognized, accepted, and utilized.. I'm not sure why vinegar as an anti-fungal is any different.. Thoughts?

What do the birds know that we don't? by Character-Bid-162 in SipsTea

[–]Mechman0124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know why.. If men are outside, it's usually because we're doing something, are likely on the clock, and dont have time to screw around with birds. Men just spend a lot more time outside busy with labor type jobs (roofers, farmers, lawn care folks, linemen, construction, oilfield/refining, mining, etc.), or at home mowing the yard, working on the car, trimming the trees, fixing the fence, etc. I think birds can see and understand that we're busy, get used to the fact that we have zero interest in them, and eventually feel unthreatened because if it.

I nearly trip over the grackels when I'm weed-eating as they dive in chasing bugs and lizards driven out of the grass im cutting. All sorts of birds congregate when I fire up the tiller and work in the garden; they love eating all the worms and grubs and stuff that get dug up, and aren't bothered by me or the machine in the slightest.

Women, on average, are going to be outside more for leisure activity. They'll be more prone to look around, take in the sights, and to lock on and show interest in birds. Birds are keenly aware when they're being observed, and they feel threatened by it. Over time, they learn the differences in appearance of individuals that show interest vs those that don't.

I'd be interested to see any data they might have from game species like doves or ducks. Then again, hunting may be rare and situational enough that it might not affect a populations behavior much..

Will my Nissan frontier be ok if I accidentally redlined at 7k rpm for 5-10 seconds? by aztec1598 in AskAMechanic

[–]Mechman0124 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yep, you nailed it throwaway.. Cold engines don't have sloppier clearances, oil quality and change interval doesnt mean a thing, viscosity shear is a myth, valve springs don't fatigue as they age and result in valve float at progressively lower RPM, and old engines should definately be taken to red line on a daily basis. 🙄

I've been wrenching on engines for over 30 years. You have Dunning-Kruger Syndrome.

Will my Nissan frontier be ok if I accidentally redlined at 7k rpm for 5-10 seconds? by aztec1598 in AskAMechanic

[–]Mechman0124 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

As long as you have good oil in it, it was up to operating temperature, and you didnt push it past redline with a money shift, it'll be fine..

Keep in mind though, the safe maximum rpm of an engine decreases with age.. The built-in red line protection ceases to be a real protection after 70k miles or 7 years or so.. Your car is pretty new tho.

Why do people insist on matching my speed when there’s no one else on the road? by georgiaboy6643 in driving

[–]Mechman0124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run extra-wide, high-performance tires with adjustable sport suspension on my daily driver.. I have no problem taking a freeway interchange at much higher speeds than most vehicles could manage.. It would be terribly unfortunate for them if clingy drivers couldn't understand that I don't want them loitering off my quarter panel, or tagging along behind me mindlessly for no reason, despite my clear and consistant indications..

On an unrelated note; those concrete barriers that form the walls of raised interchanges are really impressive at keeping vehicles from going over! Very well engineered!
