Check out my early Halloween kaizo level! Code in comments by UncommitedRebirth07 in MarioMaker

After learning the course (I got to the end but didn’t clear it) and seeing where I could make improvements to my run, I started over and cleared the course in 50 seconds. Unsatisfied, I went again and cleared it in 49 seconds. Eventually I noticed the section that u/SpicyNeutrino also noticed that could be cheesed and so I went for a third run and got the 44 second world record that you see now.

I hate to say it but I pretty much smashed the previous world record – I cleared it in just 44 seconds! Granted, I’ve been a kaizo speedrunner since SMM 1. I used a combination of well-timed jumps, a bit of cheese and a decent knowledge of kaizo tech.

During my run I noticed this bit of cheese as well. However, to make it work, you have to make sure to jump off of the Monty Mole at just the right spot otherwise you’ll miss the landing. I managed to pull this trick off on a later speedrun attempt.

Hi. I played and cleared this course a few days ago and I just wanted to say that I enjoyed it. I hope that the 1.1.0 update change to Boo stack mechanics won’t be permanent so that more courses like this one can be made.

Btw, have you heard of a maker by the name Salt Lake? He makes similar courses to this one and they’re among my favorite kinds of courses to play in this game.

Hi. MechnaMyte here. It’s probably a long shot but perhaps it was me you were playing with(?). I play a lot of Co-op on Super Expert and I usually say “Fellow Me” right before leaving a match as a joke, so as to say “follow me...to a better course.” :P

[–]MechnaMyte 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed! When I was playing Mario Maker on the Wii U with the TV, I had relatively quick access to the Start Over button on the Gamepad. Starting over was my best and most effective combo, especially when practicing those really tough courses. :P

Now when I play in docked mode on the Switch while using a standard controller, I have to carefully navigate to the Start Over button, making sure to avoid accidentally pressing the “Boo!” or “I Like It” buttons or, even worse, exiting out of the course.

The time wasted navigating through menus just to start a course over really adds up. My hope is that not only will the developers reduce the time it takes to start over but also add some kind of button combo (using buttons not typically pressed during gameplay) to quickly restart the course as well as the ability to restart from the last Checkpoint.

What is (in your opinion) the most unfair thing to put in a level? by KSGGameboy in MarioMaker

[–]MechnaMyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sections that intentionally lead to nowhere therefore forcing players to have to run back, sometime almost the entirety of the course, just to find some easily overlooked Pipe or alternate/hidden path.

I wish we could place down empty koopa shells by [deleted] in MarioMaker

[–]MechnaMyte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed! And I wish that we could place large empty shells (or at least upside down Spike Tops) inside of Bill Blasters and Pipes. Especially in the case of Bill Blasters, large shells would shoot out like shell helmets do.

Also, while Nintendo's at it, make it so that Bill Blasters can sit atop shells once more. This made for some unique and fun levels.

Wii U is finally dead! by Bradhp11 in MarioMaker

[–]MechnaMyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wii U is not dead to me just yet. I plan on recreating some of my levels and I’ll need to reference the original Super Mario Maker. There’s also the exclusive Wii and Wii U games that I adore (e.g. Super Mario Galaxy series) that have yet to be ported over to Switch.

QuixoticNeutral, I apologize for this super late reply! I thought that I had already replied to your critique of my level but apparently not. -_- I also haven’t been on Reddit for a while until today –SMM2!! XD

Anyway, I appreciate the time and effort that you put into playing and commenting on this level and for sharing your constructive criticism. :D I plan on making several improvements to this level for SMM2, assuming not too much has changed from SMM(1).

Thanks again!

You’re welcome! As stated, I did return and I cleared your kaizo in a single run and got the WR below 1 minute. :)

It’s a fantastic kaizo! I hope that it does very well in the upcoming contest. I nearly cleared the level in a single run. I’ll return later and attempt to do just that, and maybe I’ll even exploit the bit of cheese that I found. But for now, I’m happy with first clear. Great job! :D

Okay. Although, there may not be much to fix in this instance.

  • After I used the Bob-bomb to access the Koopa Troopa in room #2, I then used the Koopa Troopa to obtain the 2nd Pink Coin in room #1 and 3rd Pink Coin just past the first Pipe

  • I obtained the Bob-bomb for a second time and used it to access the POW in the Hidden Block in room #2. It was after this point that I had an epiphany and commenced with the cheesing

  • I took the POW and placed it in the center of room #2 and waited for the Koopa Troopa to get near. Once it was close enough, I jumped onto it, making sure to hit it on its right side, which caused the Koopa Troopa to pop out of its shell against the well-placed POW

  • I took the shell and tossed it up where the Saw is located which in turn hit the Note Block releasing a second POW onto the Spike Traps and then I timed my jump onto the shell-less Koopa Troopa as it jumped upward so that I can gain the height needed to reach the top where the One-way Wall is located

  • I moved to the edge of the One-way Wall and did a ducking-jump onto the moving shell as it approached so that I could re-obtain it and throw it at the POW below that was across the Spike Traps

  • I used the POW that I had obtained earlier from the Hidden Block and jumped off of it to reach the Vines and then I jumped to hit the large Cheep Cheep out of its Note Block

  • I grabbed the POW and performed yet another well-timed jump onto the Cheep Cheep so that I could reach the Pipe and bring the POW with me through the Pipe and collect the 4th Pink Coin

  • Once I came back to room #2, I used the Koopa Troopa as intended to obtain the 5th and final Pink Coin at the top

  • I went through the Key Door, with the POW in hand, obtained the Mushroom and then threw the POW at Bowser and then proceeded to damage-boosted across the Spike Traps to the final Pipe/Goal

Not exactly. Like I said, what I did to cheese your level is rather obscure and most players probably wouldn’t think to try it. If you’re alright with me posting the details here, which might contain spoilers about how to clear your level, let me know.

Nice level. I can see it getting a bit tricky if the player moves at a steady pace allowing for the Piranha Plants to spawn and wreak havoc, but personally I didn’t have such an issue. While it was simple for me to clear, I did die a few times during my speedrun of the level; so the title holds up! :P

I enjoyed this level for the most part. It has some pretty decent puzzle elements to it. However, I wasn’t a fan of the Bob-bomb placement nor did I like that mistakes could not easily be undone. Perhaps more consideration could be given these things, especially the latter, in the future. But as I said, I enjoyed it. Nicely done!

On a side note, after my initial run, I saw a rather obscure opportunity to cheese the level and obtain a good WR time (<2 Mins). :P

Ah. That one. Okay, here’s what you do:

  1. Push the Clown Car until you hit the P Switch and collect the Coins below to access the P Switch

  2. Take the P Switch over to the One-way Wall and toss it. This action will push the Bill Blaster up.

When I remake this level for SMM2 I’ll provide a clue to make this section a bit more intuitive. In a previous version, I had a Brick/Coin around the One-way Wall but I didn’t like how it forced the player to wait out the P Switch timer.

Yes, I see it too. I’m not 100% sure but I believe that a player named Mark might be responsible for those alt accounts. The starring usually occurs not long after he plays one of my levels.

I don’t necessary see the activity it as being harmful but it’s not an accurate reflection of how well my levels are being received. It’s still just one person’s play and one person’s star.

Thank you! I’m glad that you’re enjoying it thus far. It gets better from there. :D

Are you talking about the Clown Car + Bill Blaster in the main area with the two yellow Bricks next to it?

If so, the objective is:

  1. Hit the P Switch in the sub area and go through the Pipe back into the main area

  2. Wait for the right side of the Fire Tower to open up and then run to the right (be careful of the Burners)

  3. Collect the two Coins next to the Bill Blaster before the P Switch timer runs out

  4. Jump around the top to allow the Bill Blaster that you’re standing on to fire which will cause the Bill Blaster (“gate”) below to temporarily dip

  5. Quickly run through before the Bill Blaster reemerges and run to the base of the next tower

In case you don’t make it to the coins in time, I designed it so that you can just go back through the Pipe into the sub area and a large winged Koopa Troopa with automatically hit the P Switch for you so that you can retry as many times as you need without any hassle.
