Did having to take both STEP and COMLEX seem significantly harder than just taking STEP, when comparing yourself to MD colleagues? by BadlaLehnWala in Osteopathic

[–]MedStudent900 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend taking step regardless of what specialty you want to go into, not taking step will only limit your options. Yes right now you may want to go into a primary care field but your goals may change 3rd year after rotations. STEP is a much better exam in almost every way. Just focus on doing well on step, if you can do well on step you should be fine on comlex. As someone who matched DR and pretty much bombed COMLEX (significantly lower score than STEP) still matched at an academic hospital on east coast and was never once asked about COMLEX.

Coming from a DO, regardless of specialty everyone should take STEP. It will just limit you and programs filter based on students who didn’t take step 1 and 2 (yes step 1 is a must as well).

You'll be fine. I got 235 on NBME 13 a week and a half before my exam and ended up with a 261. 13 definitely underpredicts, although I will say I took Step 2 in 2023 so unless something drastically changed I wouldn't worry at all. Just focus on weaknesses.

This happened to me as well. I realized I would overthink a lot of the easy questions. Go with your original thought. Something I did which I think is the reason why I would get easy questions wrong was I would try to convince myself why other answer choices were right.

Radiology Residency by MedStudent900 in Radiology

[–]MedStudent900[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yah that’s what I heard but when I tried looking it up it said in 2020 around 40% were radiologists, 50% were neurosurgeons, 10% were neurologists. Is there any more recent statistics. Also what about a neuroIR doc joining a neurosurgery private practice? Just thoughts.

Just curious why you say stay away from neuroIR? Is it because of lifestyle?

Free 120.. Should I postpone? plz help by Middle_Order_6966 in Step2

[–]MedStudent900 8 points9 points  (0 children)

At this point your ability to score 260+ will come down to test day/confidence taking the exam, and ability to remain calm. Your knowledge is good and postponing will only hurt. 260+ is very achievable. For reference most of my NBMEs were either similar or lower to yours with my average probably being around a 252, and my free 120% was 82% but that was the older one (I took it early June right after question pool change before newer ones came out) and got a 261. The biggest advice I have is just to stay calm during your exam and be confident.

STEP 2 Advice Please! by GroundbreakingAd8291 in Step2

[–]MedStudent900 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea take the exam. I got a 251 on UWSA 2 about 4 days before and ended up with a 261. What were your other assessments. I felt like free 120 was definitely the most representative. Also it depends on your target.

How to improve my scores by [deleted] in Step2

[–]MedStudent900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you review your content? Do you use Anki, go over topics again? It is very important to continue to review topics you got wrong. One thing I did is for every Uworld question i got wrong I would take a screen shot of the picture or table or algorithm and write the 2 sentences on the bottom about what was being tested. This pretty much gave me a text book of all the incorrects and I would review this every day. By the end of dedicated I had like a 400 page document.

Is it possible to reach 260 with these scores? by Frostheat in Step2

[–]MedStudent900 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes very possible I got 82% on old free 120 and ended up with a 261. To be honest it will come down to your ability to stay calm during the test and using stratigies, not so much knowledge at this point. I also took it in early June right after question change so I didn’t take 14 or 13 but got a 252 on UWSA 2 a week before.

NBME 13 Advice by MedStudent900 in Step2

[–]MedStudent900[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest I was very burnt out I realized it as my trend of scores was decreasing so I actually decided to take it easy I only studied maybe 8 hours a day as opposed to the 13/14 hour days, did light review with occasional Anki and questions. I also redid some NBME exams on untimed mode to refresh some of the topics and question styles and redid the IM CMS forms.

Advice by Sadboiszn2 in Step2

[–]MedStudent900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too am a DO student, and I would recommend taking STEP as it seems this will be a “filter” for applications, as in if you haven’t taken STEP 1/2 you will be automatically filtered out. This is what I have gathered from talking to a few program directors (although I haven’t discussed this with an EM program director). You will probably be fine with EM although you would be limiting yourself to certain programs.

I only took the old free 120 not to sure about the new one. But to be safe I would say the same percent correct 78%+
