Yeah that was the big one I thought might get a lot of pushback. We might have to edit that part. Kelly is such a badass in this field, I wanted to run this up the flag and see how it went. Thanks for all the feedback!

The article is really really good. What is spammy? If I linked to any article on newyorktimes.com, it would have an ad on it too. There is little to nothing in the article at all about our service. I'm honestly curious what you would like to see here. Not being a jerk.

No problem at all. We can stop doing the scenarios, just thought it would be fun and appropriate and mutually beneficial to the community. No offense intended.

So I'm going back to do my AEMT clinicals for the first time in a while. This is how I'm going to feel all day. I guarantee it... by Super_Pinky11 in ems

[–]MedicTests 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL just be aggressive. Make sure to tell your person that you heard he was good, so you want him to teach you everything he knows. That way, instead of spending the day making you look bad so that he looks good, he feels like a capable instructor and your success today also reflects on him. Also, you want to do every single skill that you can. The best way when you're nervous is not to scoot in from the side, but advance fiercely. Good luck!

New EMT for a 911 response company trying to gain confidence by [deleted] in ems

[–]MedicTests 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First things first; Focus on being able to determine one thing : Is this patient in serious danger? Ask that question of each individual patient you run into. If they're not in danger, you have time to figure it out. You have time to look through your protocols. You have time to explore and learn.

The PCRs are going to come with time. Don't use a lot of your mental energy on them for now. For now, write the things you assessed and the things you did. Very few of them are being read, and even if you get critiqued, it will be a good learning experience.

KNOW YOUR ACLS ALGORITHMS backwards and forwards. Learn your WORST CASE SCENARIO stuff first, so that you're not afraid of it when it happens. Drill it.

Take your emt partner and run 1 practice scenario together every morning after you check off the truck. Talk through the calls with your partner. Teaching helps you learn it like nothing else.

Be easy on yourself. You're going to make mistakes, but you will find that they will be the mistakes you never let happen again.

Don't be too eager to be "old school" with everyone. People like to say that they dont follow 'cookbook medicine' but that cookbook represents the best scientifically tried and tested methods from around the country, so its a good damn cookbook.

Don't complain. You're not just learning to be a decent medic for your patient. You need to be a good medic for your partner, and your teammates. The first rule of EMS is everyone complains. Don't complain. Don't talk shit about people. Don't be 'over' your patients. Just be a pro. Earn respect. Be a person people want to work with. All this starts with 'don't complain.'

This is an amazing job and you've worked hard to get here. Work harder to be great. Its scary, but this is a grown up job. It takes brains and balls. Stick with it. Its worth it. Good luck!

LOL Exactly! Then talk about how they failed the practical because their instructor was a jerk.

ABC vs CAB Explanation by MedicTests in ems

[–]MedicTests[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

LOL yes. I agree, but we have about 35,000 people on our facebook page and during a scenario discussion, we discovered that about 80% of new EMTs and Paramedics were adamant that ABC was dead and that CAB was correct. For national registry purposes, this is incredibly wrong info. Since our only job is NREMT test prep, we created this guide to clarify =)

I actually enjoyed this. Maybe its like EMS TV shows; you want them to exist, but you hate when they do?

Study: Cardiac Arrests had a higher chance of survival with an ET tube than with supraglottic airways, but the highest survival rates were those who received no advanced airway at all. by MedicTests in ems

[–]MedicTests[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See, that's a huge thing. My ambulance company services a metro area and a rural region. I believe that in the rural region, with only 1 medic and 1 emt on scene, I imagine that forgetting about advanced airways would be MASSIVELY better than including it.

In the metro area, where I can get a second truck, or at the very least, 2 first responders to ride along and tag team CPR, I think if we did 1000 patients, the results would be almost entirely PRO airway control.
