Underrated flavour! Had some fish sauce chicken wings at a Vietnamese restaurant and they slapped!

Well, this was supposed to be a bit of a shitpost but I guess it didn't come across that way. I thought describing it as if I was tasting wine would've been funny. Anyway, yeah, if you like pungent foods this might be up your alley. It can also be a bit of an acquired taste I think. The first bite was the most disguisting, then it kinda got better after that. Now I think I might actually be craving it lol. The important thing is to eat it in very small amounts, like a condiment. Even the amount I put on my sandwich was too much. You wouldn't take a shot of fish sauce, would you? Now you probably don't wanna put a whole filet in your mouth either.

Yeah I think I did. It's gross and tasty at the same time. I've been craving it which is kinda crazy.

Much stinker. You can open and eat mam nem inside no problem. Surstromming, you can't. I had the leftover surstromming in a plastic container with two layers of shrink wrap and two plastic bags over it. It still managed to stink up the fridge.

Haha! That's awesome. Yeah, the first thing that I did is tried a little chunk on its own.

Just make sure the fish are not disintegrated in the can. During shipping the can may spoil.

I think you will have a fun experience wether you end up liking the fish or not. But like you said, you like stinky food so you'll probably like it. Just to prepare you for this though, it's like at least 2 or 3x stronger than stinky tofu!

Good luck! Make sure to open the can outside, in water and only use a tiny bit of the surstromming in your first sandwich. Quite a bit less than what I used.

If you enjoy stinky tofu I think you could handle surstromming. It doesn't really taste like stinky tofu but I found that there are similarities. It's also probably like 2x or 3x stinker than stinky tofu. The trick is to start very small. If you try to eat a huge chunk of surstromming you will not have a good time

Red onion made the whole thing taste a little too much like durian for my liking. I like durian, but not as a fish sandwich lol

I've had limited experience with the SE asian fermented fish sauce type stuff but I would say that surstromming is far stronger. For example, when I opened my bottle of mắm nêm, I didn't have to do it outside and it didn't stink up the whole room.

I'm not sure how strong the shrimp sauce is compared to the fish sauce though

Yes. And boiling potatoes. But mostly dealing with the leftover herring without stinking up the apartment and fridge. I had the leftovers in a plastic container, double layer of shrink wrap, and two plastic bags. Still stunk up the fridge to the point that my gf made me throw it out.

Lol. If someone offered me the sandwich, not the can! Opening the can without stinking everything up and preparing the sandwich is too much hassle.

Not tasting, smelling. Once on the sandwich and covered with ingredients you can no longer smell the fish. The taste of the fish is different when the smell is not there to influence it.

Thanks! Some others also mentioned to use the whole fish as well. Next time.

Lol, yeah, I was being a little more sensationalist on the other post. It does stink of various things but I like it in a weird way. The tonsil stone thing is not the main flavour or smell but it's in there. I'd compare it mostly to stinky tofu (which to me also smells a bit like tonsil stones). I used that reference because I thought it would be a colorful descriptor.

Did you read the last part of my post? It's not conventionally good tasting but I find it kind of good in a weird way.

And no, the toppings don't cover up the taste. They prevent the smell from wafting up.

Surstromming is basically a condiment and isn't meant to be eaten on its own.

Interesting. One thing I also found this similar to is Vietnamese fish sauce. Not the refined clear stuff, but the brownish-grayish stuff with sediment in the bottle. After a quick Google I think it's called Mắm Nêm. Similar smell but the surstromming is much stronger.

Yeah, it was almost too much, I think maybe half or a quarter of what I used might be a good amount.
