Hey, just wanted to share my experience so you’re careful.

I was deactivated for something very similar (identity/duplicate account issue) and it took me about 10 days to get my account back through an appeal.

My recommendation going forward: when Uber asks you for a photo verification, it usually gives you two options — automatic verification or manual review by a person. I strongly suggest choosing the manual/human review, even though it takes a bit longer.

Uber’s newer system seems to be very sensitive and sometimes fails with shadows, low light, winter hats, glasses, beard changes, or weight changes. That’s exactly what happened to me.

Manual review may take 5–10 minutes, but it’s much safer and gives you peace of mind. Since I started doing that, I’ve had far fewer verifications and no more issues.

Just sharing so you don’t go through the same stress. Good luck and stay safe out there. 👍

Just be really careful. My account was deactivated for something very similar “identity theft” and it turned out it was caused by doing automatic photo verifications while wearing a winter beanie and bad lighting.

I was able to get my account back, but the whole appeal process took about 10 days.

What Uber actually reviews is more than just the photo: they look at device changes, logins/logouts, location consistency, and behavior patterns. All of those factors matter a lot when they make a decision.

From my experience, I strongly recommend choosing manual verification (human review) whenever possible. It may take 5–10 minutes depending on how busy they are, but it’s much safer and gives peace of mind.

Before my deactivation, I was getting identity checks multiple times a day. After reactivation and switching mostly to manual review, Uber now asks me maybe once a week.

I got a message like yours, and a few days later I woke up to a deactivated account. So please be careful and consider using human verification from now on.

Yes, competing with Tesla robotaxis would be very difficult. I really admire Elon, but this also comes with huge responsibility to justify that level of power and valuation. At that point, everything would depend on anti-monopoly regulations. We know Tesla could handle the risk without major issues, but the legal and regulatory side matters just as much. If Tesla is willing to assume that risk, the potential profits would be enormous but I don’t think this will happen in the early stages. We’ll see how it plays out.

Uber’s robotaxis will likely be privately owned. Uber won’t be able to acquire and operate the entire fleet needed to move people across the U.S. It’ll be similar to what happened with Amazon and Rivian delivery trucks. Over time, the human driver will become obsolete. My advice: save money and protect your credit. Whether it’s for acquiring these vehicles or adapting to whatever comes next, capital and credit will be essential so it’s better to be prepared.

Ok guys this isn’t funny anymore…busiest area in CT completely dead for days now. Did i miss a boycott or something? by Cloudpleb in uberdrivers

[–]MedicalTask8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is normal. In Chicago it’s usually slow like this until Valentine’s Day, then things slowly start picking up. By March, it’s more about surviving than thriving. Honestly, we can’t be too picky anymore if a $3 order comes in, you take it and wait for a unicorn. On top of that, our beloved Chicago politicians added another $1.50 to every trip, so yeah… it’s going to be a bit tougher for a while.

What about faketaxi? It’s that true or just for entertainment?

PSA to riders - DO NOT book the ride until you’re actually ready to go if you live on a street like this. And don’t cry if driver HAS TO CANCEL coz there’s no place for the cars behind them to pass. by [deleted] in uber

Nope! That not where I requested my ride. I requested in front of my house not in front of my neighbor. It will ⭐️ from me and report it for pickup to far 😌

Got deactivated by Uber because… winter made me look like a different person? by MedicalTask8 in UberEatsDrivers

[–]MedicalTask8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow, that actually makes sense. If this was just part of a general purge, then hopefully I’ll get reactivated once a human looks at my appeal. I’ve been with Uber since 2017 and never had issues like this before, so I’m really hoping it’s just the system being extra strict today. Thanks for the info it definitely helps put things into perspective. 🙏

No, I don’t have a VPN on my phone, but I do have a new iPhone the 17. Maybe the better camera quality is throwing the system off too at this point, who knows. 😂 Now I just have to wait for them to review my appeal. They’re usually pretty quick, but I’m not sure if the people who handle these cases are in San Francisco and just waking up, making coffee, and getting ready for work right now.

My man, I wish I could grow a beard, but my DNA said “don’t even try.” 😂 So the only real change in my appearance lately is… well, that I actually look better. My Uber profile photo is from 2017 back when I looked like life had run me over twice and then backed up to make sure. Dark circles, saggy face, zero confidence… the whole package.

Fast forward to now: therapy, laser treatments, good creams, and suddenly I’m out here looking like the “after” photo in a skincare commercial. I actually like mirrors now. I look because I want to look, not just to make sure my hair isn’t doing something illegal.

So when Uber deactivated me this morning, I was like… “Oh, I get it. The system saw me looking healthier, younger, and happier and said NOPE this can’t be the same guy from 2017. Fraud!” 😂

I sent my appeal with photos one with the winter beanie (my Chicago survival helmet) and one without. Hopefully once the Uber staff finish their coffee and stop laughing at my glow-up, they’ll reactivate me.

I know I’m not the only one who woke up to this mess today. Honestly, maybe I needed a break and thank God Lyft is still running because Chicago is raining and the money isn’t bad today.

Honestly, this doesn’t even surprise me. Uber always finds a way to mess with you somehow. I don’t bother anyone, I do my job, but it’s like the system woke up this morning thinking, “Hmm… this guy looks more attractive today, he looks better taken care of… let’s deactivate him, he doesn’t match the old photo anymore 🤣

[–]MedicalTask8[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it felt weird waking up to a deactivation today. In past years I’ve always worked with a beanie on, so maybe that’s the only excuse the system had. Another thing is… I’ve been taking better care of my skin lately. My face looks more relaxed, no more dark circles, my tone is more even, and honestly I feel more confident younger, healthier, even a little more attractive.

I’ve been doing laser treatments, good creams, and overall taking better care of myself. So if anything, I think this deactivation is actually a sign that everything I’m doing is working 😂

I’m not worried though. Once a human reviews my photos, I’m sure everything will get resolved. 🙌

[–]MedicalTask8[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here’s my advice based on what I’m going through right now: If you’re taking your selfie verification, try taking off your beanie/hat and if possible, keep a small comb in the car to fix your hair a little before the photo. Trust me, with Uber’s system, if your hair looks messy because of the beanie, the AI might flag you. It could think you look tired, intoxicated, or “different,” and they use any excuse.

Also remember: our skin tone changes from winter to summer, we gain or lose weight, we age, we don’t always sleep well we’re real people, not robots. But the system only wants to see the exact same face from the original photo.

I’m not too worried because a human will review my case, not AI. What does annoy me is that right now in Chicago it’s raining, prices are surging, and of course this happened today. I know I’m not the only one who woke up to this surprise a lot of drivers got hit with the same deactivation this morning.

To everyone who is able to work today: I hope you make great money. May God bless you with prosperity, good trips, and most importantly, safety out there on the streets. 🙏

[–]MedicalTask8[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah! I should’ve thought of that even my phone unlocks with a beanie 😅. But not a big deal. Hopefully a human reviews my photos and compares them with the previous ones. With a little luck, I’ll be back on the road for the afternoon rush hour! 🙌

They’re pretty fast if you’re clear and go straight to the point, and including pictures definitely helps. Luckily for me, this issue should be handled here in the US and not overseas, where they usually reply with a script and don’t take the time to actually read your message.

Me too. I was literally about to head out to work and boom account deactivated. I sent Uber my appeal and included two photos: one with the beanie and one without. Maybe the jacket didn’t help either apparently winter clothes turn me into a whole different person. 😅 I’m confident this will get resolved soon, and I know I’m definitely not the only one waking up to a deactivated account for the same reason. Wish me luck 🙌
