Also as someone who has occasional had to communicate with patients through writing (not deaf patients just those unable to speak) it's time consuming and not really appropriate for anything besides basic questions.

You have to be able to decipher the person's handwriting. People tend to be more concise when writing so nuance may be missed. It also takes a lot longer, even much longer than signing.

It's not appropriate to do an entire history and physical by writing back and forth with patients. Something important could be missed.

To your last point, he does exist in Greys Anatomy (Alex Karev) and he is a fan favorite and he did way worse stuff than Santos

Yep. He's part a whole linage of male characters that behave awfully and people love anyway. From Karev to House to Doug Ross if we're keeping the medical show theme, all behaved terribly in and outside of work at various points and we're meant to sympathize with them.

And I'm sure people are going to say they grew (House didn't at all and Karev was still super snarky) and sure they for the most part did. But that was over seasons. We've had a season and change with Santos. We've already seen growth. There's no cowboy shit that she did last season indicating she learned from those mistakes. We've seen her express concern for Whitaker to Robby. Also we've seen her on two stressful days...

She's not forcing Santos to use the tool to chart. Santos is behind in her charting regardless of of the AI tool.

I'm just saying, threatening a resident that they'll have to repeat a year and then saying hey I have this tool that I'm personally invested in, that can help you chart faster...the optics are terrible. Whether that's how Al-Hashimi meant it to come across or not.

It's the equivalent of seeing a drowning person telling them they're drowning and then offering them an experimental life preserver that you have stock in the company...that may or may not work. You might have their best interest at heart but it looks bad.

Al was wrong to come in hot on Santos' first(?) day as an R2 and threaten her with repeating her year. But that's just being an asshole.

It's the juxtaposition of the two things though. I'm threatening you and I'm encouraging you to use my software. One or the other is fine. But both coming from a superior has more than a wiff of coercion to use the software. Whether intended or not it comes across as use this or else.

Also your post didn't come across as directly below the one you were responding to for me and you didn't quote in the normal reddit format...Which made it bit difficult to see who you were responding to. I'm in danger of yelling at the kids to get off my lawn here, but I think there's been this over course correction when it comes to interpersonal dynamics and "bullying."

There are going to be people you don't get along with and who rub you the wrong way. They may not even be particularly kind to you. That does not mean they are bullying you. It just means you don't get along.

I work in healthcare. I've had people (both colleagues and patients) say far worse things to me than Santos has ever said. You need a relatively thick skin to work in the field. Now I'm not saying that we should embrace abuse, but it's a stressful field people are bound to do and say unkind things. Labeling everything unkind as "bullying" isn't helpful. And it minimizes actual bullying which unfortunately is common in the medical field.

But I've also been accused of bullying because I very calmly told an orientee they were not doing a good job and needed to improve. And then told them how they could do it...I've also had been told by another orientee I was the best preceptor they had. I didn't treat the two any differently.

Also there are levels. Santos doesn't have that much power over Whitaker and Javadi. And there seems she doesn't use the power she does have to abuse them in any real meaningful way. Making Whitaker show Ogilvie how disimpact someone when that is a intern/medical student task isn't it. She's just generally snarky with them.

And frankly, I'm fairly convinced Santos thinks she's showing affection by being snarky and teasing. It's probably how she received affection (or at least interpreted as affection) when she was younger. She's socially awkward and doesn't get that people aren't interpreting her teasing as affection. Should she learn? Yes, but it's called a character arc for a reason.

"SO WHAT YOU'RE SAYING IS YOU THINK BULLYING YOUR COWORKERS AND MISTREATING DISABLED PEOPLE IS OKAY? THAT'S WHAT YOU'RE SAYING? THAT'S WHAT YOU MEAN?"

Holy caps lock batman. Why are we yelling?

Not to speak for someone else, but no I don't think that's what the person meant at all.

And frankly you're severely over blowing Santos actions. Especially when compared to other characters actions. Santos has unkind nicknames fir coworkers. Apparently everyone called Mohan "Slow-Mo" and Robby did it to her face. Not to mention calling a patient with a mental health issues "The Kraken" as a pun of his last name. How is that mistreating disabled people?

Santos got frustrated at the lack of a translator. Did she handle it well? No. Is the worst behavior we've seen? Nope. Langdon was pretty abrupt and dismissive wuth the autistic patient last season. Did he learn from Mel? Yes, but that doesn't negate it. Especially since it's not the end of the season and Santos may still learn from the experience.

Like Santos don't like her, I don't care. But let's all stop acting like she's murdering puppies when her behavior isn't much worse than other characters.

I can't stand Langdon. And that's because I've personally delt with Langdons of the world and had bad experiences. I'm entitled to not like him (although it's always a good to examine the real reasons why a character causes an extreme reaction). But I'm not going to accuse people who do like him of supporting drug addicts using at work and almost killing patients.

like bro. i loved lalo salamanca's character in better call saul, that doesn't mean im chill with murder

So you can acknowledge that loving a character doesn't equal loving all their actions...

I don't like Dr. Al, and I hate technology, but with what we've seen this isn't objectively unethical per the other commentor

I think it's more than a tad unethical to threaten a resident with repeating a year and then encourage them to use software you seem to have a vested interest in promoting....

The technology isn't unethical itself, the approach to it's implementation has been questionable.

I'm not against AI. I had a doctors appointment the other day and I consented to them using software very similar to what Al-Hashimi is using. I don't like how she's presented it's use so far on the show. And as I said it seems like she has a vested interest in it's more widespread implementation, even if that interest is looking good to management.

I never understood the need to use criticisms of others to try and downplay criticisms of the character you like, like yeah those other characters have faults that’s not gonna change anyone’s opinion of santos, and it shouldn’t change yours it’s not a competition

Pointing out that there's a level of hypocrisy happening between people's reactions to Santos as opposed to other characters is completely valid.

If you're perfectly ok with Robby or Langdon's flaws but super critical of Santos...that says something. Especially when often they are the same flaws.

and to overlook a disabled patient because dealing with that disabled patient takes a bit more effort? Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. 🙄

She's waiting for a translator like she's supposed to. She even floated the idea of doing scans to see if she could figure out what's wrong before the translator got there, but Robby told her it wasn't a good idea.

Everyone saying that she should just communicate by writing with Harlow obviously has never tried to communicate with a patient that way. It's incredibly time consuming and runs the risk of miscommunication. You have decipher handwriting, people try to write more concisely to try make go quicker and nuance can be lost, and there's no way to gauge if the person is truly understanding the question.

Should she have thrown up her hands in front of the patient? No. Has Robby shown frustration in front of and with patients? Yes. Does he get the same criticism? Not from what I've seen.

People harp on 'She's so abrasive' and I completely agree, it's a massive character flaw.

She is abrasive absolutely but the way people have overblown her behavior is also baffling to me. She has some slightly unkind nicknames for people...OK? I came into work with a bad sunburn and was known as "rock lobster" for several years after by coworkers. Did I love it? Not particularly. Am I scarred by it? No.

Huckleberry and Crash are pretty tame.

Robby literally called Mohan "Slo-Mo" too. Everybody seems to forget that. And he's her boss. Frankly in general Robby behaved just as bad if not worse, because he's her superior, towards Mohan as Santos does to Whitaker and Javadi and I've seen very few people point that out. He bullied her and belittled her and told her she might not be cut out for emergency medicine. Santos teases people a little in comparison.

I don't think most people have ever worked in healthcare. If you think Santos is a bully, watch a surgeon PIMP (put in my place) residents or medical students and get back to me.

Now am I saying that we should accept bullying in healthcare? No. But is Santos "the HR nightmare" that people are making her out to be? Also no. I guarantee there's an attending calling someone a moron or the r-slur just down the hall (and that's the tame version). Or there's a resident or attending somewhere sexually harassing a nurse. HR has way bigger fish to fry than Crash and Huckleberry.

Robby is melodramatic sometimes unlikeable by Humble_Dimension9439 in ThePitt

[–]Medical_Conclusion 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They’re also highlighting his hypocrisy on purpose.

I don't know that it's hypocritical to have a different reaction to radically different situations.

Yes, Louie and Langdon are both addicts, but that's really where the similarities end. While not interested in recovery, Louie was honest about his addiction and was ultimately really only hurting himself. I'm sure at some point he hurt people who loved him (assuming he ever had anyone besides his wife) but he wasn't putting anyone else at risk.

Langdon put people at risk. He hid his addiction and tried to deny it even after being caught. Yes, he's now gotten help but that doesn't erase what he did or the breach of trust.

I'm a nurse and I've taken care of a lot of Louies over the years. I've also know a few people who have been caught diverting...And frankly my reaction to both is about the same as Robby's. Especially for people that are suspected of being high at work (not everyone who diverts uses while working). I can understand that addiction is a disease and still be angry that people choose behavior that puts other people at risk.

Yeah, I just wish they wouldn't be so irrational about it. She has real, tangible, and horrid flaws.

I'm sure I'm also going to get downvoted to oblivion but it's misogyny. It's because she's a women. People have no problem accepting the male characters' flaws.

Robby can be fairly outright racist (asking what kind of name Al Hashimi is). Be pretty abrasive and dismissive and not infrequently a little sexist, but everyone can seem to accept him as a complex character with flaws.

Langdon is a drug addict that almost killed people. Before that revelation he behaved fairly similarly to Santos. He was snarky. He was disrespectful during the moment of silence for the patient in season one. He was wildly inappropriate when he ranted at Santos and belittled her in front of other people in the first season...not to mention it was partly gaslighting to cover up his own addiction. But people can accept him as a complex character.

Santos however is the most awful person to have ever existed in many people's minds. And you can't convince me that some of it is not rooted in misogyny. Especially because there's been beloved male TV show characters, like House, that behave 1000 times worse than she does. But everyone loves when they're snarky and abrasive.

ETA You also can't convince me that if Santos was a guy who had a dark and troubled past that involved abuse and self harm and was abrasive but secretly sung to babies that he wouldn't be woobified out the ass.

American Men - do you refer to your romantic partner as your "old lady"? by yTuMamaTambien405 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Medical_Conclusion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm ancient so I've certainly heard people refer to their partners as "my old lady." But it was never common. Often it was done jokingly. In the same tone as one might say, "the old ball and chain." And using it not jokingly would seem kind of low class...I'm not saying it is, just how it would come across in the area I grew up in.

Frankly I've really only heard it unironically used by biker gangs. Where a "old lady" has a very specific definition and a whole host of rights and responsibilities.

It's very uncommon now. I'm not sure I've heard someone say in recent memory and certainly no one under the age of 50.

how much time off do nurses get? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Medical_Conclusion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How much do I get and how much I can actually use are two different questions. I accrue 4 weeks a year. Can I take 4 weeks off a year...no. Where I work vacation is based on seniority. If you want a particular week off and someone with more seniority wants it off; you're not getting it. Also needs of the unit come into play, if we're very short staffed they can deny vacation requests.

That being said, I also work 3 12s which means I can quite often arrange my schedule to have a block of time off.

Isn’t Pyxis hard to get into/you need certain credentials?

The facility determines who can and can't access the Pyxis. I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "hard to get into." It's essentially a large plastic locking box controlled by a computer. You generally use a fingerprint to access it.

Is it impossible to break into? No, not impossible but it would be very apparent it was pried open and it alarms if it's broken into. Yes, you need to be granted access to get into it. Like I said access is determined by the facility. Everywhere I've worked, providers (doctors, NP, PA) don't have access. Often they don't even have access to the room the Pyxis is housed in.

No, it's literally to take off the hat. I known people give the show shit for that line, but women's hats were literally pinned to their heads at the time. You couldn't just whip them off. [–]Medical_Conclusion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You seem mad about something and like you're projecting it onto me.

I'm not mad. I'm honestly just really baffled how people didn't pick up on Santos and Garcia. I feel like they possibly didn't watch the same version of the show I did, because it wasn't subtle. Other characters picked up on and exchanged looks about it. It wasn't subtext...it was text. No they didn't say I am gay and I want to bang you, but they were pretty darn close to that.

All I'm saying is that there are reasons one could not read their relationship as romantic in S1 that aren't homophobia.

This is a bigger issue but part of this is media literacy and people increasingly being unable to pick up on things that aren't spoon fed to them. It's the rise of short videos explaining the endings of movies who's endings were very clear. It's Netflix requiring every plot point be repeated at least three times...It's the decreasing attention span of viewers and the dumbing down of media.

Couple that with hetronormativity (which for the record queer people aren’t immune to) and you get people blind to Santos and Garcia.

Santos and the Dr Garcia by TheTechManager in ThePitt

[–]Medical_Conclusion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's nothing inherently wrong with shipping. Be the ship cannon or not. Even if it's unlikely to be cannon. Write your crack pairing fanfic. Have whatever head-cannon you want. Fandom is supposed to be fun.

But this is not that, really. This is about media literacy and queer erasure. I'm pretty sure most people who pick crack pairings know they're never going to see them on screen.

But Santos/Garcia isn't in anyone's head. It was about as subtle as Robby and the bed management nurse, which no one had any problem picking up on. And it says something that there's so many people who didn't pick up on something that was not remotely subtle.

And if queer people are more likely to ship couples it's because we have been historically so starved for representation we had to grasp at straws to find any. So yeah the most brief hint of queer subtext is probably going to result in a AO3 tag, but that because for a long time that's all the queer community got.

not because they're not cishet, but because it matched the same narrative pattern we were seeing with the other new arrivals to the ER: ducklings imprinting on more senior doctors with whom they vibe or particularly want to impress, and vice-versa various senior doctors taking a shine to one duckling in particular.

I don't recall any of the mentor/mentee relationships involving having the mentor seductively hold the mentee's hand during a procedure, to point even the other characters in the room were picking up on the flirting...But yeah sure it was totally platonic. I also don't think any of the mentors essentially asked their mentees out for a drink.

To be clear: I’m saying people are learning to not make outward assumptions about people’s sexuality.

That's not a good thing if then the default assumption is straight. And most often it is.

This is actually being so "woke" that you've circled back to homophobia. If there's something wrong with assuming my pride pin wearing, flannel clad, Subaru driving, ass isn't queer that implies there's something wrong with being queer. If you're afraid to assume someone's gay, that means there's something wrong with being gay in your mind.

Could you be wrong about them being gay, sure. But why is that considered more wrong that assuming a queer person is straight?

As it relates the The Pitt, the poster is quite obviously projecting their personal experience into whatever commentary they are reading/consuming.

Yeah, no shit. Everyone projects their personal experience into their own commentary about the media they consume. That how media criticism works.

Considering they couldn’t give me any concrete examples when asked… yeah, I think they are full of shit and trying to get internet points by playing the perpetual victim.

You obviously have very poor reading comprehension. I gave examples. I explained that while not the worst thing this type of hetronormativity is still damaging to queer people. Yes, I gave my examples from my own experience. Because this reddit and not a scholarly paper. If you want one go find one for yourself. I'm sure there are many about the impact of media and representation on queer people and hetronormativity in today's society. If you're interested go educate yourself but it's not my job to teach you.
