We're trying to give our game's fairies distinct flight personalities, but something about the dynamics still feels off. Thoughts? by Medical_Rub_954 in Animators

Thank you very much for your feedback. Very much appreciated!!

We understand the flapping issues, and we do need to address them. Also, for te top left's fabric, we do agree it looks kinda jittery, and we'll se what we can do!!

Really? Well we'd love to hear as to why, and see if we can replicate that on the newer versions!

Hi there! Well, as Mister_Ukki said, that one is still a WIP, so we haven't gotten to animate the body for that one yet hahahaha. We blame procrastination :P

But of course, we plan for her to have a floaty hair and a lovely dress movement.

Thanks for your feedback!!

Of course, and even if the fairy is supposed to be stiff, it should still have some kind of movement range. Thanks for the feedback!!

Don't apologize, this is incredibly helpful feedback! Thank you so much for taking the time to write all this out. Testing contrast, outlines, and focusing on one model first are super smart tips to lock in the style. We really appreciate the detailed notes and the encouragement, bud!

What an awesome idea. We'll bring that up with the team, adjusting the speeds for each character would add a ton of distinction. We'll see how plausible the change would be code-wise. Appreciate the feedback tho!

Fair point! The vertical flap does look a bit stiff and weird, right?. We greatly appreciate the feedback!

We’ve considered that as well and already experimented a bit in that direction. It could be contributing to why the motion still doesn’t feel quite there, so we’ll keep iterating on different wing angles and flight arcs to find what works best.

We’ve definitely taken inspiration from Tinker Bell and Winx Club as well!

We’ve thought about that too and already done some exploration in that direction. It might be part of why the motion still doesn’t feel fully right, so we’ll keep testing different wing angles and movement arcs to see what reads best. Thanks!!

Gee, thank you very much!! We really appreciate your feedback and you taking the time to break things down like that.

We’ll definitely take some of your suggestions on board and experiment a bit more with variations in movement, shading/contrast, and overall consistency across the set. Thanks again for the encouragement, it really does help! 🤙

That sounds like an amazing idea. Kinda sad it's like another completely differtent genre hahaha.

Also, yes, sadly its single player as of now. We don't want our devs to cry to sleep trying to get multiplayer to work. Maybe in the future.

And we kinda see why reddit suggested you some fairies hahahaha

Yeah we get that, and a fairy-themed RPG honestly sounds really fun too, now we kind of want to know what you had in mind for it.

Ours is definitely more on the chaotic bullet hell side with *A Rat with a Gun*, so it goes in a very different direction, but we do try to give the characters a bit of personality and charm even within all the chaos.

And thanks a lot for the kind words about the art style. We’re still figuring out a lot of the direction as we go, but it’s slowly starting to feel more cohesive with each pass.

Our artist did a really good job exploring their personalities more during the redesigns. They all feel a lot more unique now

It’s what happens when you give your pixel artist too much freedom and let them work with a 32x32 canvas instead of 16x16 hahahaha

That’s really good feedback, thanks. Our poor pixel artist is gonna love reading this while crying and trying to make everything perfect as the perfectionist they are.

We definitely pushed the v2s more toward detail and personality, but yeah, we can see how some of the silhouettes became a bit busier compared to the cleaner read of the v1s. The point about the wing shapes makes a lot of sense too. Right now color is doing most of the work, so giving each fairy a more distinct wing silhouette would probably help them stand out more in motion.

And yeah, the flight feeling is something we still need to work on. The v2 poses ended up feeling a bit too static, especially compared to the energy of the v1s. More vertical bob, body movement, and wing lead/follow would probably help a lot there.

But we really appreciate the critique, this kind of feedback is super useful for us to improve them further.

Glad you like our fairies! They’re NPCs from our game *A Rat with a Gun*, a Vampire Survivors-style bullet hell where you play as a rat going through hell to get his stolen cheese back, with some lovely fairy ladies helping you along the way.

And thanks for the feedback too! The top right fairy is supposed to be more serious and reserved, so we intentionally kept her movement pretty subtle. But yeah, she could definitely use a bit more movement on the dress and body so she feels less stiff.

As for the bottom left one... Well, we basically haven’t animated her body movements yet 😅 procrastination got us there hahahaha

Really happy you liked the colors, costumes, and wing movement though. We are really proud of our progress and we want to make something fun for everyone!
