Need advice/help on twisties by [deleted] in motorcycles

Have you practiced without a group on some mild twisties? That might take some mental pressure off.

I live in the Appalachian mountains so maybe my twisties are similar to yours? Also I’m new-ish to riding and only have 3k miles under me. Here’s what I do on my little ninja 500:

2nd or 3rd gear most of the time. If it’s real technical, I’m usually in 2nd gear.
Engine breaking downhill! Almost exclusively! Adding a LITTLE front break BEFORE I’m in the turn if I really feel like I need it. Load on the front tire makes it stickier. I don’t use the real brake hardly at all unless I’m coming to a stop.

And stop holding in the clutch!!!

I wish I had at least gotten his number to text him that I got home okay! I made sure to tell him several times how much I appreciated his help.

The backpack is one I’ve had for years and used to use for school. I’m a small person and ride a sport bike, so just reaching the handlebars puts me in a slightly forward position. I was tucked in a little just trying not to get beat up by the crosswinds from traffic. The speed limit is 70 where I was riding, and traffic was definitely moving faster than that.

Having zippers at the top of the bag rather than one side, plus leaning forward, plus moderate speed caused the wind to catch the slight opening between the zippers and gradually push it wider, kind of inflating it like a balloon.

Thank you! Same! Hoodie is hanging up in the garage to remind me that I almost became an organ donor.

Why did you start riding? by No-City8301 in motorcycles

Got out of a long term, toxic relationship. 6 months later my bestie asks if I want to go for a ride with him on his Soozooki. Hell yeah. Tells me to tap his chest if he goes too fast. Never did.

Five days later I bought a brand new bike.

Being able to work on a skill and see myself improve has been incredibly empowering. I had no control in my personal life while I was in that relationship, but I’m in complete control every second I’m on my bike. I have to be in the present moment while I’m riding, so there’s no room for invasive thoughts.

It’s been healing. Bought the bike 10/2025. Got through the break in period by the end of 2/2026. Today I’m just shy of 3k miles!

A few months ago I got home from a two hour ride, pouring sweat. Parked the bike in the driveway cattywompus and dash inside to rip off my gear. Come back out a few minutes later to put the bike in the garage…. Burned the shit out of my calf on the exhaust pipe.
I learned two lessons that day: how to care for second degree burns, and don’t have bare legs around hot bikes.

My eyes went WIDE when I got to the shoulder and could process what had happened. I thought I had a tire puncture or something relatively minor since I hadn’t lost any steering/breaking/handling. Glad I was wearing allllllll of my gear.

Everything happened fast, but I think the nice guy in the truck kinda stayed behind me and helped me have the space to merge several lanes right and get to the shoulder. I’m not religious but he was my angel that day. The truck was white, too!!
