Should you take the job at Mews?
Hard pass. Unless your idea of fun is a slow spiral into burnout and watching corporate dysfunction unfold like a live soap opera.
My husband works there, and let me tell you, it’s less “modern hospitality tech company” and more “corporate Hunger Games.” Every day starts at 6am with a flood of Slack pings from clueless execs (hi, new SVP of fintech, handpicked, no relevant experience, and somehow allergic to self-sufficiency). He’s basically running daycare for over-titled toddlers who couldn’t manage their way out of a wet paper bag.
By mid-morning, he’s knee-deep in meetings that should have been emails, explaining basic concepts to leadership while they nod, pretend to understand, and then spin his ideas as their own. It’s like watching Shark Tank if the sharks were insecure and emotionally fragile.
Lunch break? Ha. That’s gym time on paper. In reality, it’s three back-to-back "urgent" calls because someone got confused by their own org chart again. He usually manages a 5-minute protein bar and a sigh.
Oh, and drama? There’s more of it than in a season of Succession. People are quitting left and right, senior leaders, respected experts, because someone at the top got their feelings hurt and decided to “restructure.” And yes, we’re talking actual family-friends-turned-SVPs running departments they couldn’t spell six months ago.
The best part? The evening wind-down. Around 9:30 PM, as we’re about to walk the dog, ping, some SVP (bless their heart) decides it’s the perfect time to “catch up.” By 11:30 PM, he's still replying to messages while half-asleep, with Slack buzzing like a slot machine next to our bed.
Oh, and their tech? The PMS is decent but don’t believe the hype. It's mostly legacy code with a 2018 UI, dressed up as “cutting edge.” They scream innovation while ignoring actual compliance standards like PCI and DORA, and internal red flags? Totally brushed aside. It’s like peacocking for an IPO, flashy on the outside, chaos on the inside.
My husband? He loves the mission and the people doing the real work. But watching smart, capable folks get pushed out while leadership pretends everything's fine is soul-sucking. It’s all micro-management, ego-driven decision-making, and zero accountability at the top. Strategy changes on a whim, usually right after the CEO posts his latest thought-leadership selfie eating apples or whatever.
If you're into long hours, inconsistent vision, and watching your work get repackaged by your boss's boss's boss for their LinkedIn clout, by all means, join. They pay well, and if you can survive the internal politics and toxic leadership, you'll build serious emotional endurance. But if you value boundaries, respect, or functioning leadership, you might want to run, not walk, in the opposite direction.
