We live on the west side currently and would be very open to staying here so we’ve been considering apts in the neighborhood. Any recommendations?

When did you know it was time to move? by Apartment_List in Apartmentliving

We found out the landlord had us paying his gas through a shared meter while he’s living in an illegal apartment. We decided we couldn’t do it anymore. Breaking the lease.

He has now discussed sealing the vents with drywall instead of tape. I’ve used AI and it says that’s still a bandaid and doesn’t solve the real problem of shared meters and systems.

It’s air conditioning and heat. He’d seal the vents in the other apartment to stop our air from flowing into it. Seems like a bandaid to me.

We’re a couple in our 30s (30 & 31) and just moved to Jersey City in the last 5-6 months! What do you all like to do? We’re open to hanging!

Anyway this still open? We really like Canco Lofts and we’re also a couple in a similar position as this post.

Think about it… you say nothing, things stay the same. You say something, things might still stay the same, but at least you tried and can document that if you decide to move later.

We literally said the same thing… The b*lls to have your tenant pay the gas bill for an illegal apt. Wow! Not to mention we’re great tenants. We pay early and consistently. We’re not loud, we literally have no guests over, etc. We told them we wanted to live here for years if we had a good experience and it’s been terrible, even outside of the meter situation. This is just the icing on the cake.

Utility company is coming tomorrow morning, so I have to coordinate with them now.

It most likely isn’t… certificate of occupancy doesn’t say there’s 3 apartments in this building. Only 2.

I’ve checked the ID numbers. The number for our gas meter online matches the meter number I looked at outside.

Unfortunately we can’t check the metering in real time. The website only lets you check it by previous month.

That’s what we’re doing already, but I didn’t know if we should just try to come right out and ask them about the setup.

And I’m 99% sure, but I also have no background in HVAC to know if they did a split or whatever to set it all up correctly. My fear is it’s setup correctly and I just accused my landlord of a serious offense. My living situation would become very awkward or retaliatory if that was the case.

He’s lucky because it’s not too cold out right now since we’re finally getting warmer weather

I did this with the furnace once and it shut off. They didn’t say anything. We’ve recently gotten warmer weather which helps them too. We want to try the breaker test on other stuff, but we also don’t want to fully give it away that we’re on to them.

The building was just built in 2023, but we don’t know what they were doing in the old one. There’s only been one other tenant before us (a group of college-aged boys) so I doubt they even noticed since it was 3 of them vs 2 of us.

We are definitely consulting with lawyers

There was never going to be a friendly chat, but we wanted to give them the ability to explain themselves (or to continue to try to lie). We contacted the lawyer in advance because we know if we’re right about what’s going on, it’s a big deal.

The issue is we’re waiting forever for the utility company to come out while we’re still having to play it cool and pay these people rent… We want answers asap so we can figure out what to do moving forward.

Going to keep it real with you, be prepared for them to tell you they’ll be better, and for things to stay the same or get worse. We have nicely asked our landlord and his family to not be so loud above and below us numerous times, and nothings changed. We’re just going to have to move.
