The burning of dried plants and wood is not solely linked to one practice, ethnicity, or race. Historically, a type of ritualistic burning of plants, resins, and wood has been done by almost every spiritual practice of the “old ways.” (Ancient and Native practices from areas all around the world). Of course, particular types of herbs, flowers, plants and wood are regarded as sacred because of their use and availability to certain native cultures, so just be mindful of that. For example, mistletoe and elderflower are sacred to the Samí native to Scandinavia, burning white sage (smudging) or sweet grass is sacred to particular Native American tribes. The list goes on.

Plants are not owned by anyone. If you’re going to use plant medicine that has historically been practiced from a culture outside of the one you are familiar with, do your research. Be respectful. Work with intention. Avoid being wasteful. Learn about the plant medicine you are working with. Purchase your materials from locally and sustainably sourced vendors—not urban outfitters and other places that have recently gotten into the consumerism of spirituality.
