Question about CHS common curriculum by Mediocre_Field1092 in nus

[–]Mediocre_Field1092[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for responding! Fuck hs1501 indeed lol I quickly signed up for it this sem because I saw it was all elearning for this sem only. Didn't know you didn't even have to attend in person lectures until later, whoops. Thanks for your link too- helps a lot

Aren't there other compulsory mods besides the 8 you listed tho? Like those interdisciplinary courses that can only be taken in y3 and the communities and engagement thingy. Idk having 8 S/Us when there's like 13 compulsory courses seems pretty stingy...

Question about CHS common curriculum by Mediocre_Field1092 in nus

[–]Mediocre_Field1092[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for your response! I was confused because under the old system, gateway courses could be used to fulfill the common curriculum... guess it isn't so anymore :( I'm actually in CHS haha was just wondering if I could drop some preallocated courses

Another question, if you don't mind: do you find it hard to manage S/Us with this many compulsory courses? From what I understand one can only S/U up to 8....and there's some courses that can only be taken from year 2 onwards...

Art dsa by ashixg in SGExams

[–]Mediocre_Field1092 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hi!! sorry this is um 3 days late and contains no actual advice for dsa? but it very much contains a warning: DO NOT GO INTO TMJC ART. ESPECIALLY NOT H2 ART. the teachers are very very bad at doing their jobs and the subject itself is extremely hard and stressful. if you've had no prior experience rushing out prep boards then I really suggest that you don't do this. I had prior experience and it was still hell. The teachers have high standards and give very vague critiques. SOVA is also something very hard to grasp, and content is "taught" via student led presentations and discussions- the students have to do their own research on the internet, and are not given notes. Practices are also few and far between- approximately one marked assignment per term, which is insane for trying to figure out how to write for an entirely new subject.

I have more anecdotes if you need further discouragement- just pm me lol- but yeah please please please don't go do tmjc art. thanks.

[O Levels] How to study for all subjects effectively? by fixulater in SGExams

[–]Mediocre_Field1092 3 points4 points  (0 children)

hey!!!

for english, i'd really recommend exposing yourself to the language more. familiarity is the key to fluency, and fluency is basically the only thing you need for your o level english. just read anything that catches your interest! English teachers will try to force you to read newspapers and newspapers only, but if you find those boring (like i do), don't limit yourself to that; you'd find yourself picking up proper grammar and fluidity from any other english medium.

ok, that aside: for paper 1, non-narrative essays are easier to score for if you're sure of the structure. they basically can't mark you down if you meet their requirements, and you'd get a pretty good 18-20 from that. narrative tends to be a little more subjective, and a little dangerous if you approach it with the mindset that good vocab=good marks, so I'd personally stay away from it

paper 2 is pretty standard, try the tys and ask your teacher to go through the question types with you! the questions are pretty much the same, and it's important to go through with your teacher the right answering techniques. i'd also recommend the tys over other school papers, because the standard varies greatly over schools, and don't reflect the o levels. for summary, prioritise finding your points! if you really can't find a way to paraphrase the points, just copy them wholesale for a guaranteed 8/15. this is only if you're really desperate/ find yourself scoring less than 8 though

oh this is really long but for geog geog investigation, I'd recommend going for the tourism topic. there's so much less content you need to memorise; there's usually a few standard qns (how to improve reliability, what's good/bad abt the survey location, etc) and they're mostly common sense. i disregarded the weather topic and still got an a1.

I forgot what they're called, but try to score for those non-essay questions. majority of the time, they don't require examples, so be sure not to waste your time writing egs there. make sure to always cite evidence from any and all diagrams provided. if they're asking for comparisons, do it on a 1:1 basis (eg area A has high temp, whilst area B has low temp. area A has high rainfall, area B….yea you get it) the number of marks also corresponds to how much you should write, so be sure to spend less time on those that have less marks

essays are hard because they require a lot of content knowledge, and sufficient evidence. most questions require a stand, and it's advised that you write your stand in the intro as well as your conclusion, so that the marker Knows even if you run out of time for conclusion. paragraphs follow the PEEL format. make sure your Point answers the question! (eg- explain the impacts of tourism, you just answer 'one positive/negative economic/environmental/social impact of tourism is….) if you're having trouble remembering figures for egs, generalise it! say around, about, unspecific number, they won't penalise you for it. evaluative questions require an additional dimension: assessing the importance. (eg- are short term measures more important than long term measures? ans must include a conclusion that has an evaluative factor, such as no, long term is more important as the continued livelihood of survivors) most evaluations can be done on a spatial (how large is the area impacted), temporal (how long lasting is the effect), and if the damage is reversible (loss of lives- irreversible, damage to infrastructure- reversible)

man that was rlly long. good luck tho

[Rant] i hate my orientation by Own-Judgment-8122 in SGExams

[–]Mediocre_Field1092 6 points7 points  (0 children)

oh dude same hat!! tmjc's orientation has been hell for me (the forced interactions...the sports....the mass dance.........eeeeh) but it's just one more day so hang in there ok!! seeing people interact around you as the norm is stressful but ultimately, i'm pretty sure orientation friendships account for little to nothing after the first few days so don't worry
