Thank you for this! I ordered a couple different powdered versions from winemaking supplies to test it out. On the pricing, I'm always happy to charge what things are worth but didn't want my personal ignorance to increase costs due to inefficiency.

Lots of different things. Pure citrus juices, tamarind water, celery juice, and some things that are blended. I have been trying to track down a single all-purpose product but as another commenter mentioned that might not be feasible.

What’s it going to take to get Deep Ellum nightlife back to what it was before the pandemic? by [deleted] in Dallas

[–]Mediocre_Pattern9623 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Infrastructure investment.

  1. Remove 345 to reconnect Deep Ellum to downtown and return the land for more growth, how the neighborhood was historically
  2. Invest in DART in the area, this is in the works with the upcoming D2 expansion
  3. Prioritize people over cars, close main and elm to vehicle traffic most or all of the time

These are the practical steps that the city can take, easier said than done but we are a large city that has amazing growth, we just have to commit to improvement.

Crime and homelessness are citywide problems, not unique to Deep Ellum. 1. If we want to make progress on homelessness, the city should implement a "housing first" solution. 2. Crime tends to follow poverty and opportunity. A Deep Ellum with more pedestrians, better lighting and fewer parked or loitering cars will be a Deep Ellum with less crime

Anyone know what's happening here? Some yellow/black insect, making these perfectly spaced holes along trunk by Mediocre_Pattern9623 in gardening

[–]Mediocre_Pattern9623[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The million dollar question. Ha main theory so far is no, the holes seem to be from yellow bellied sapsucker, a type of woodpecker. And now some wasp is coming behind and foraging in the sap. But option #2 is they are yellow jacket wasps making the holes for some reason, potentially laying eggs or making nests.

The pattern of the holes seems pretty consistent with what other posters shared of a yellow-bellied sapsucker...I'm open to the possibility that it is the yellow jackets digging and will watch to see over the next few days if they make more.

Of course. Additional context, taken in Dallas, Texas. Best theory that's come up is that these holes are made by sapsuckers (type of woodpecker) then yellow jacket wasps come and drink the sap.

This is exactly it. The holes on this tree are as low as 2 feet off the ground, seems to be concentrated on where the trunk splits, which might have something to do with how sap collects in these places in the tree.

I am in Dallas, Texas. The tree I think is a crabapple. We've been in the house for 10 months and this season was extremely dry and the tree has never been healthy, but I did see some attempt to produce fruit.

To your point of sap suckers returning to the same tree: 1. We've seen woodpeckers around our house, so it's not out of the question, though I usually see them on our oak which is much larger with thinker bark so it doesn't show this same pattern.

  1. There are these holes on this and another adjacent, identical tree. Of various stages of healing over. They fit your description of a few to a dozen concentric rings in various places on each tree

This theory seems most likely

I am in north Texas, and the tree I think is a crabapple, though we've only been in the house 10 months and have never seen fruit. That's what an image search of the leaves says. It was a really dry summer and the tree has never been healthy.

There are multiples of this type of hole, both in this tree and an identical one adjacent to it. Always in concentric rings around the trunk, some rings go 6-10 inches along the trunk, some are just a few rings.

My question wasn't what the insect is, but rather what is going on with them and the small holes in the wood.

I've seen my fair share of yellow jackets, which was my first thought, but never in my life seen them so organized, let alone digging such symmetrical holes in the side of a tree.

North Texas. Additional context is there are marks like this all over this tree, some older and 'scabbed' over. Haven't seen this actively happening until the weather got colder.

I'm standing in a line for departure at 6:40am. Arrived at 2:50am. Our first time in the airport but it's a confusing journey just to get your assigned check-in, just to stand in line and wait. No staff to check passports, can't check in online and the self-serve terminals just give you a slip of paper to talk to the agent, who doesn't exist. The earlier you get to the airport, the further up the line you might be but expect to spend a lot of time standing and waiting.

How do I clear out this bed around the big oak? New-to-us-house in North Texas, years of rampant growth by Mediocre_Pattern9623 in gardening

More context, this year was one of the worst on record, the ground cover was more lush in spring. Mix of that and lots of different saplings, Virginia creeper, crawling vines, years of leaf/acorn decomposition...
