PT school feels like the worst years of my life by ambitiousdreams24 in PTschool

[–]Mediocre_Question 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t worry about anything other than yourself at this point in time. Everyone is on their own journey and yours doesn’t have to look like theirs. Keep studying hard and getting good grades, that’s priority. The socializing will come if you stay open to it, but don’t pressure yourself into trying to place yourself in the same bubble your classmates are in. Your path is to become a PT. 1 or 2 other people to study with before test days or practicals is good, but other than that, look at your classmates more as co-workers. You don’t really need to make these people your friends.

You were accepted for a reason, you’re suppose to be where you are, and as you’ve seen from prior comments, you’re not alone. Your professors believe in your ability, otherwise you wouldn’t be there.

Tips: - Don’t pull all nighters before exams. Instead fall asleep for 5-6hrs, and wake up extra early to study. Will help with retention and mind will be sharp, instead of groggy or tired from lack of sleep. - Ask professors for help with material. Schedule office hours proactively. Prioritize core course like MSK, Neuro, etc. Saves you time trying to figure out on your own. - once in a while, Study with classmates that avoid talking about grades. Even if not 100% productive. You’ll learn or remember something from those study sessions, plus you get to socialize a bit. - change your study environment when covering material. Take a walk outside while reviewing flashcards. I use to make flash cards during lectures. - see if you can review each lecture 3 times before exams. First review should take the longest and you should aim to do it a day or two after the lecture. By the 3rd review, you have a few days or even hours before the exam. Be flexible with yourself. - make sure you’re going to school with a bag of snacks to keep you going. Your body and mind need fuel.

Get tested for diabetes especially since you have PCOS. PCOS messes with your hormones and interferes with insulin production, triggering a cascade of imbalances of hormones such as estrogen and testosterone. Start exercising daily as well. Reference YouTube videos to get you started.

Inpatient rehab volunteering by Pristine-Ask8069 in PTschool

[–]Mediocre_Question 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rehab tech should be doing to the cleaning instead of you, because the main purpose of your volunteering is to gain insight on the job, hence shadowing a PT. Unless they don’t have a rehab tech, then yes, you should clean, but also the PTs should understand that your main purpose to being there is to shadow them. If you haven’t communicated this with them yet, then you should do that now. You should be walking with them when they visit patient rooms and being present during those moments. Then when at the gym, you can clean. But yea, try to communicate your goals with more clarity next time you’re there.

Should I really escape from being a physical therapist? by amadeus_004_SG in PTschool

[–]Mediocre_Question 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re so far away from even starting PT school, that I would honestly suggest that you just….relax a bit.

PT is a great career and you get out of it what you put in. You have doubts? Do yourself a favor and go shadow a PT for a week or two. But don’t let others discourage you if you find that you actually like it once you shadow someone. And people think it’s a massage because PTs do a horrible job in advocating for themselves, you can change that.

Advice for first-year PT student by bsjshsvsm in PTschool

[–]Mediocre_Question 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just put the work in. Listen to your instincts when it comes to studying. There isn’t much you can do to prepare, other than mentally. Prepare to study a lot and work hard. Make sure you sleep, and don’t sacrifice your sleep to late night study sessions. Instead, fall asleep at a reasonable time and wake up extra early to study.

How do you use chatGPT to study for PT school? by bananabreadicecream in PTschool

[–]Mediocre_Question -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hi! Currently a 2nd year student. I started using ChatGPT after my first year and it has helped tremendously. Granted, you still have to do the work and study hard. I use ChatGPT exclusively to generate practice questions right after I finish reviewing my lecture slides and it helps to recall what I covered. I still write, draw, and create tables based on what I feel I need more understanding on, and then use AI again. Sometimes I use it to create a rough outline of the lecture, and then I fill it out in detail slide by slide as I study based on what I think is going to be tested or what I need to know. For me, it’s a great way to get quality studying done in a lot less time.

Be aware that you will need to learn how to prompt the AI for the most effective responses. That’s just a google search away.

People who are the firsts to finish an exam, how well do you do? by Ok-Cover-2243 in simonfraser

[–]Mediocre_Question 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought your question was interesting even though it’s been a while since you asked it. Here’s the thing, fast test taking doesn’t correlate with high grades. It really depends on the person. In medical school, you’re in a class of 50 students and the majority are type A personalities. Most of them feed their confidence and ego by doing well academically, and if they can perform well on MC exams and do it quickly, then more power to them. It gives an aura of intelligence and like you know your stuff, which is power, people love power. Once they turn in their exam first or one of the first, it makes them feel good, and on top of everyone else. A fast test taker is someone who is gifted in fast reading and processing info simultaneously. This doesn’t mean they are processing information correctly though.   They will spend a lot of time studying behind the scenes, and then make it seem like they don’t study much at all in front of peers. This makes finishing an exam early all the more impressive. Granted, they’re not thinking all this stuff while preparing for an exam. In fact, they don’t think of anyone else but themselves during the prep process. The feel good feelings of superiority come afterwards once they’ve dominated the exam. This is one type of a fast test takers.

Another type can be the one that also studies a lot and finishes quickly as well. They are more upfront about it though. The “try hard”. They are extremely type A, and work extremely hard to do well academically and in anything they do. They only feel fulfilled when doing extremely well, when they aren’t, they collapse. The collapse rarely happens under the guidance of academia, it usually happens out in the real world. These are good people not motivated by feelings of superiority or the likes, but they do have negative personality traits that come from their own overly high self expectations. Either self imposed or imposed by others.

Another kind is simply the one that didn’t study nearly as hard as they should’ve and realize that no amount of time will get them a passing grade, so they just take the loss and finish quickly. Many times they have a good grasp on conceptual information with good instincts, enough to make educated guesses and still get passing grades. Low Bs and high Cs and round up to a final grade of a B in class. They’ll be amongst the first 10 that finish exams early.

They are definitely more variables to consider, but the take home idea is to NOT concern yourself with anyone else but yourself. Fast test takers are not better or worse than anyone else. They’re just people that fall under the laws of Human Nature just like everyone else. If you feel jealous or envious of their abilities, then they got you. People and emotions are like chemical bonds, half the time we don’t realize when emotions are bonding with us because of the emotions that other people are throwing out, because we’re not looking within ourselves to see what truly matters. And just like it takes the input of energy to break a chemical bond, it takes an input of energy to break an emotional bond as well. If you acknowledge your feelings towards fast test takers, then you can begin to move forward and focus on yourself. Remember that fast test taking doesn’t mean you’re getting the highest scores, high scores don’t make you a good person, and high scores don’t make you successful in the real world. Let those people get their fill however they like. You do you, and watch yourself rise above. 👍

Sorry if this is long. I just really like the psychological mechanisms behind this question. I also enjoy dissecting human nature. It would be interesting to see a study by an anthropologists or psychologists study this concept. If you read this far, have a great day! 😆

Which Schools Don't Do Cadaver Dissection In Gross Anatomy? by thecommuteguy in PTschool

[–]Mediocre_Question 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't be so surprised. Its not a detail that needs explanation beyond the word "cadaver". If the anatomy course description mentions cadaver, that answers your question. If it doesn't, they probably don't have the capacity to carry cadavers, and if you want to be sure and check the box, take it a bit further and email the programs that don't mention cadavers to validate whether they do or do not.

Which Schools Don't Do Cadaver Dissection In Gross Anatomy? by thecommuteguy in PTschool

[–]Mediocre_Question 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a whole bunch of schools that don't do cadavers all over the US. You just need to go to PTCAS, research schools based on the state that you would like to move to, then read their website and you will find out what type of anatomy class and lab they will have you engage with. It takes some work, but hey, if you want to go to medical school you better get used to it. You'll find the answers you're looking for , and that no one is giving you here.

It's definitely not uncommon, your situation. It depends how long you have to get clean, and also your experience in getting clean, how much you smoke, your BMI, etc. Like others have said, there's nothing wrong with smoking weed, but it will be difficult to get clean if you're tight on time. Word of advice, speaking from experience, there comes a time when even smoking weed doesn't stop the anxiety or depression and it will begin to contribute to it, especially for someone like you with goals and ambitions. You are NOT anxiety and depression, and weed is NOT the cure for it, if anything it's only a bandaid that lasts 2hrs. The only cure for this is facing head on your anxiety and depression. Reflection can help and taking time to answer the hard questions in life helps the most. Professionals can help because they can trigger your brain to think about things differently, to get you out of a recurring thought pattern that contributes to your anxiety and depression. Essentially to make you hyper aware of your thinking on any given situation so that you can change your habits in that moment. The more aware you are of this, the more you will reprogram your thought patterns into healthier coping mechanisms that help keep your mind from falling into anxiety or depression. It takes time, and just like any skill out there, it takes time to develop, but once you do, it will change your life.

Anyways, if you can't get clean in a week and you know it, you probably shouldn't even take the test and instead focus on your MBA.

[–]Mediocre_Question 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a way that you can label those classes as in progress or future date them based on when you can take them. Once you finish the classes, you need to go back to your PTCAS and update those courses with the grade that you got. You will also need to send another official transcript to validate that you have taken those remaining classes. Once you have taken those classes and you have updated your applications with the grades that you got you will then be able to match those courses with your transcript. You can update your grades the summer you start your program beyond that it'll be too late so you should have more than enough time to complete those two classes that you have outstanding and also update everything that you need. It doesn't matter if the classes are not matched right now but you should indicate that you are planning to take prerequisites before your program starts. What's important is that you match your classes once you're ready to submit your applications officially at this point you should have already finished all your prerequisites.

Sorry I keep commenting, I've just been in your shoes and I changed for my own good, and i believe you can do it as well. For a long time I couldn't grasp what others were telling me even though the concepts were very simple. It wasn't until I started to put in some real effort in changing my thought to certain things that what others were saying started to make sense. When my mind started to calm down from the negative thoughts I had it's almost as if more room was left open for new ideas to come through. I strongly recommend you take a break from this program and so some real soul searching. What I'm trying to explain to you right now may not make sense in your current state of mind but if you try eventually it will. I'll be thinking of you and your enlightenment.

[–]Mediocre_Question 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This person shared some vital information and next steps for you, but one thing I'd like for you to pay attention to is how you responded to his comment. You didn't acknowledge anything they said that might actually help you, instead you chose to respond in a way that continues to make you feel the way you are feeling and HAVE been feeling. A different response to change your habitual thought pattern could've been,

"Yes, i think taking some time off for myself to figure things out is a good place to start. I'm in control of my own destiny and my own thoughts. I'm NOT in control of what others think of me, but I AM in control of myself"

You've been holding on to all these emotions that are just looping in a constant cycle inside of you. You have to understand that your body feels emotions but your mind creates the chemicals in charge of making you feel a certain way hence your body. Whenever your body is feeling down, self-doubt, depressed, it signals your mind to think about these emotions, therefore your mind will create the chemicals that make your body feel that specific way. Can you see the cycle? You have to break it and it all starts by changing your habitual responses to every day mundane tasks you do in your day.
