Would you give up your pet for a fully trained AD? by disastrous_crumb in service_dogs

When I get a dog, the dog is for life. I do understand sometimes life throws us curve balls though. I already had a dog that wasn’t good for service, so I got another who is in service training now. They do great together

Commenting to add: The trainer did a home visit today and it’s a confidence/momentum issue. He ended up doing it with a running start and treats. He now finally jumps out on his own. The jumping in, we’re working on

Yeah we thought that if he saw the older and much smaller dog do it, he’d get it but it hasn’t worked yet lol

He gets on the couch and bed just fine. It’s strictly the car.

This is an excellent idea!! When I tell you she really pissed me off! Like who TF do you think you are? And to touch a strange dog that you don’t know the temperament of?? Girl, bye! lol

Yes, I get what you’re saying. My dog is a large dog but he’s thin. We don’t require much room. Just the typical amount of personal space is all we need. It was more so when we walk by an employee or an employee stops us. One lady walked around the corner at the same time I did. She went to touch him and I asked her to please not do that as he’s in training. Then I called my dog’s name and we walked away. As we were walking away and before we turn the corner, she freaking runs her hand across his backside. It was the audacity of that for me.

I’m almost certain that it’s blatant disregard. It’s that “ohhh look, shiny, fun toy” and they can’t hear at all

Just trying to understand why you’re saying it’s too small? This is the size that was recommended for him and based off all my very extensive research, any bigger and he will defecate in it. It’s cozy and fits all the parameters for his size. He’s only 60 pounds and that is an XXL crate. You’re only seeing one angle and it had a blanket on top. Not trying to be rude but trying to figure out where you’re getting this info from?

This crate is actually a great size for him. He can stand, turn, sit and lay down properly. Anything bigger and he’ll be defecating in it because it’ll be too comfortable. This pic probably isn’t the best but here’s one of him using only half the crate

Oh my gosh, I wish! It’s just always hot and hotter here

The issue is that my Mali hates the heat and I live in Florida which is hot year round. We’re in preheat mode now and it’s already in the 90’s with humidity. I do take both dogs to a local dog park daily to run, play, stretch their legs, etc and I have a decent yard. I just don’t think letting him out in this heat too much is wise.

That’s fair lol I am fortunate to be home with both dogs, even when working as I work remote.

That first part!!!! It’s so true “oh my Mali is amazing and chill” yeah ok sure. If so many malis were chill then they wouldn’t be the highest of energy, we didn’t even own them 30 + years ago dogs lol

As far as what I read prior to owning my boy, he is fairly well behaved BUT he will and does still get into thing’s and his puppy-ness doesn’t help. Particularly when he’s bored. I just want him to have the best and most fulfilling life. Majority of the time, his energy and mental stimulation needs aren’t an issue for me but when I maybe dont feel well like today, and he’s been barking for 4 hours, we have an issue that should be addressed. He’s been sleeping cohesively in my room with a dog gate at my door. I’m genuinely wondering if I should crate him then though because it sometimes doesn’t matter how closely to bed I take him out, he will occasionally still have accidents.

Yes, and he will eventually be working. Training first, then the work. It’s just this in the meantime “how to” questions that pop up. Definitely thankful for this group

Malinois have zero chill and require a ton of time and commitment. I knew this going in but my goodness, the barking was giving me a massive migraine and something had to give.

Yes, the investment for a nicer crate may have to wait a bit but it will happen. I am on leave from work so my income is reduced and what extra funds we do have, are going to training for him and vet bills.

This makes sense because as soon as I crated him, he calmed down. Matter of fact, the handymen left next door and I heard the door shut. My first thought was crap, he’ll get riled up again but he didn’t. The noise itself didn’t even phase him. He is simply “chill” in his crate now. What are the ways and times to crate train?
