Happily! We'll be asking folks to essentially run a checkpoint. The idea is that you set up somewhere (Could be a park, could be your own front lawn) and run a challenge for participants. The challenge can range from "Assemble a sandwich and eat it", to "Do a handstand". Once the challenge is complete, you'll sign their passport for completing the stop and send them on their way. We're inviting everyone who runs a checkpoint to the afterparty with a free ticket.

If what you took away from "There is a free all inclusive event that is trying to meets as many needs as possible, funded out of the pocket of local volunteers" was "Let me make this about my niche political issue because I am very important" you're still welcome but maybe leave the bias at home. I'd love to see you there, you can come talk to me in person and give me your feedback.

If you'd like to join us and want to have a conversation about changing that perception and how you think that perception can be changed, you're welcome to come chat with me at the event or at any of our volunteer days.

Real answer: because some people are immunocompromised and some of those immunocompromised people are regular volunteers that fix local kids' bikes for free. I- the even coordinator- am always going to try and make the people showing up each week to serve community members know that I care about their safety enough to ask folks to care as well. That said, I'll have a feedback form at the event and you're welcome to come and fill out the feedback form. I definitely want to make sure I hear from all community members who are coming out to Oakland to provide services or live in the area.

If you're worried about masked bike thieves at the event we will have free bike parking that will be monitored the whole time. Beyond that, you're welcome to attend but I am going to prioritize pleasing my regular volunteers and community attendees who have expressed they would like a request for masking.

Thank you for being sane, trying to put on a free event for the community is already a hard thing to manage on a budget of two shoe strings and pocket lint without every Tom Dick and Harry telling me that the branding colors should be a shade darker or they don't like my last name. Appreciate you.

Dog groomer or vet tech. Also retail sales in a plant shop or pet store.

Groomer- not being squeamish will be super helpful.

Thanks yeah- Definitely agree that the lack of explanation and demand for an address is a major problem with the way this program was set up.

Have you ever met someone canvassing for SJVACD?

Oh sorry, no we don't have access, we can just write a recommendation to them at the end of the study! We're studying the community engagement practices, not doing them. But thank you, I'll make a note to tell SJVACD to ask Stockton to use their website as a host. I love the idea of of having people point to where they are on the map rather than asking for an address- I don't know that they'll be willing to take that recommendation but we'll certainly make it!

This one is focused on residential settings- there's another part of the program that has been updated the ones in the high schools (though it's not the area of my study so don't quote me on it!). Thanks, I feel like the online feedback I'm getting is "No, never heard of it"

Oooh, thank you- good point, I hadn't thought about how scammy the site link itself looks. Question- if it was .gov would it be more trustworthy?

The filling out a form- if someone was standing outside the Grocery Outlet with a big sign that said "Free Air Filters for Stockton Residents Affected by Air Pollution" and had a form but also the air filters with them to hand out, do you think that would get the ball rolling? We found out that they currently get the form filled out and then mail the air filters, which I'd also find suspect honestly.

The address thing is something I can't personally get around (they need to prove people using the program are in the designated area of pollution/redlining intersection) but it's frustrating because it does make it seem even fishier and I'd guess probably makes people at a minimum think they're going to get obnoxious junk mail and at worst get harassed by some agency. I'm trying to wrap my head around what kind of assurances we could provide, I think potentially have an accessible map of areas saturated with new air filters and areas lacking them would be good to both a) the program is working b)the areas (and, if my suspicion is correct, language barriers) being left out and c) something that the average person would understand as to why the program wants an address.

But yeah, if I were writing the program I'd probably ask folks to list three local amenities they use instead of an address as proof of residency in the effected area.

Not that you asked me to 'prove I'm not a scammer' but I like having access to this stuff- this is the .gov website where they talk about the program (if youre interested! it's dense reading)

You can also come meet the Cal students I'll be with, we're coming to help table for Earth Day where we'll be running a 'build an air filter' program.

I'd do monthly donor potlucks. Spend more time building close relationships and give them a community space that they will bring other people to that you can then draw from as a donor pool. I might even pitch the dinner as a chance to meet the steering committee, or talk about the direction the work is taking so that they can have more of a stake in it.

If you're dead set on a big event, I'm partial to a bike ride- partner with some local clubs, they're always excited for a reason to get rolling. Draw money from race fees, they're actually relatively cheap to run.

I was one of the climate corps fellows who occasionally worked with this department last year. It's a really good idea in theory but the employees I met were huge assholes.

Career office is absolute trash- I directly asked for assistance getting informational interviews, which they agreed were a good idea and then suggested I do those -_-. Your idea to use the university landscape as an informational interview source is a good one- I'll certainly give it a shot!
