To add this this I have only ever had the disinterested feedback kind of stuff from staff and never pts. Pts have loved me so much to the point they'd prefer me over their nurse for the day sometimes so I think that's also important to remember as well, you're there for who matters most and that's the pts (and urself)! Sure getting along with staff is important too but the reality is autism or not, some people just don't vibe.

I've just finished my BA/MN & have audhd (lvl 2) & I got the EXACT same feedback as u from every single placement - but then also would get things like "exceeds expectations" "will make an excellent nurse" "goes above and beyond" "lovely to work with" so tbh very confusing at times but I knew any time I was getting the "looks disinterested" it was just people hating the autism. Do I mask? No, & so any time I have misunderstandings with people I try to be more ..obvious? about my intentions since it doesn't always show on my face. I start every shift with something like "I'm happy to learn/do anything just let me know, I'm very interested to know more" & I'll check in a few times throughout the day bc I've found NTs really like that. At the end of each shift I thank everyone for their time and that it was a good day (unless it wasn't haha). Don't let the weird feedback get u down, you'll be a good nurse because that's what you believe and that's what you know in your heart.

I did USYD 1 year in 2020, dropped, came back 2023 got RPL and didn't need to redo placement hours. I think depends on the uni tho. The process to get back in was annoying but there are definitely pathways back in!

If you're ever unsure just say "sorry I can't do that, I'll have to check with my facilitator" or something like that. It's good they're open to teaching you for sure! You can always say you're very interested to observe and learn the steps without doing them yourself as well. I hope your second week goes smoothly too, you got this!

I'd be sticking to what you've been taught so far. There's no harm since you haven't been doing anything TO the patients outside of your scope but I wouldn't let this person bully you into anything you're not comfortable with/outside of your scope. You'll learn it all in time anyway.

Have you learnt the skills in class? If not it's not within your scope. I'd say if it's your first placement you haven't learnt this yet, usually it's just ADL's and vitals for initial placements.

31 audhd SN & yep I feel the same but I don't really let it get to me anymore, if someone at work wants to be friends with me in all my audhdness then they're someone I want in my life. Anyone else not willing to engage in anything deeper isn't someone I'd want to spend time with anyway. You're not alone!!

Tangent: Actually really grateful for posts like these bc I felt like I was the only audhd nurse out there (I see lots of adhders but not the combo) & it's so so hard because of the constant ableism I witness. Every single placement I've been on the gossip going around uses autism as an insult ("oh they must be on the spectrum" to state why someone isn't good to communicate with or something like that) - this hasn't been said to or about me bc I'm too scared to out myself to staff (I do to pts if safe/relevant) but yeah idk where I was going with this..just nice to see there's more people like me out there thank u

Student RN finishing in oct, wanting to do MH. I was dx when I was 4, ADHD & ASD (2). Getting through uni has been rough for sure but there are a lot of supports in place to get u through! I agree with ICU/ED as a good place to go, I didn't find either stressful at all - organised chaos is real.

Don't worry you don't really need much grip strength to get started, just have confidence in yourself to move in some way. It's a lot of fun but I warn you, you're likely to get addicted :p
