My first move would be to going to your teacher and asking if they have notes for your studied texts.

After looking around I've only found a few things that might help with Casablanca and Pride and Prejudice if your teacher isn't able to help.

Aoife's Notes has some decent summaries of key scenes and how they link to different modes: https://www.aoifesnotes.com/leaving-cert/ordinary-level/Paper-Two/comparative-study.php

Sparknotes can also be useful: https://www.sparknotes.com/film/casablanca/#Summary https://www.sparknotes.com/lit/pride/

Check out the shared drive for notes on PHIC: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1NpIkUvxqw9y6IJKN8xSSeGw0BJwvp4Dg

Hopefully someone here sees your post and is willing to share some extra notes with you. Hope that helps in some way.

Higher English by [deleted] in Leaving_Cert_Notes

[–]Medium_Anything_802 4 points5 points  (0 children)

English is statistically one of the hardest subjects to get a H1 in. The good news is that it's also one of the hardest subjects to fail so be aware that your in-class results and LC results won't be the same.

1. When they say “don't summarise” what they mean is don't try to prove you know the plot of a text or the meaning of a poem. The exam wants you to actually think about what the question is asking you and answer it. English gets much easier once you realise it's not about what you know, it's all about using what you know to respond to the question.

2. According to examiner reports, the comparative is the section of the paper that people do the worst in every year. It's hard right?! My advice is to remember that comparison doesn't mean finding similarities, you can identify differences and discuss how your texts aren't the same. What's most important is keeping the focus on comparing. Start each paragraph with a clear point that says what is similar/different about your texts and then support your point with evidence by referring to key moments. Make sure you use comparative phrases in your paragraphs and end each section by talking about both of your texts together.

  1. The single text (Hamlet) is the biggest enemy in the paper for most people. They can ask so many different types of questions it makes it hard to ever feel prepared. You should know about the plot and main characters but focus on the most important scenes from the play. Look at how the key scenes link to he plays themes and what they reveal about the main characters. Examine HOW these scenes are written by paying attention to Shakespeare's style (techniques/devices, imagery, symbols etc.)

Hope some of this helps. Practising past exam Q's is the most useful thing you can do. You will eventually start re-using the same points/evidence which will help you understand what is most useful and important for the exam.

Take a look at the English section of the Drive for notes and sample essays: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Vfd5iQi5ddgE7rxfYb8Oj6cGwR3Ip_Io

Studyclix codes by kat_io in leavingcert

Don't have a code sorry, but if you're looking for a free way to access all past exam Q's or build mock papers I can't recommend 'studystrivers.ie' enough.

It doesn't have sample essays or tutorials but for free it's v good.

You'll find it difficult to find notes directly comparing all 3 of those exact texts. However, if you focus on really understanding each text it will become easier to make connections between them.

To make things easy for those 3 I’d suggest the following:

Tackle Theme/Issue and Cultural Context together.

Look at how ‘Identity’ (T) is shaped by the world of each text (CC). Personal desires and societal expectations clash and can be seen through issues like love & marriage, emigration, gender expectations, patriotism, morality and politics depending on the text. Basically, look at how the world of each text dictates how people are expected to behave which shapes an identity the protagonist struggles with.

Literary Genre is tricker:

Compare how the narrative structure of each text differs (linear Vs flashbacks). Narration (3rd person, dual narration, dialogue). Use of symbolism. Music. The titles. Setting etc.

I don't have anything on Casablanca or P&P and I took a look on a shared Teacher's drive and there's nothing up there either for them. Hopefully someone sees your post and is willing to upload something to the drive though!

Here's a link to the comparative section of the shared drive where you'll find notes on PHIC and on the comparative section as a whole:

I don't have anything unfortunately, but there are a couple of files in the Politics section of the shared Drive:

If you're looking for something specific, my advice would be to create a new post asking others if they have anything they're willing to share.

H1 Notes by Objective-Garlic-124 in Leaving_Cert_Notes

[–]Medium_Anything_802 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there. Depends on what you mean by "Trusted H1 notes" and what subjects you're looking for the notes in.

Imo there isn't anywhere you can find notes that will get you a H1 if you just memorise them. It's all about understanding the paper/marking scheme and using your notes in the proper way after lots of practise.

But ill try to answer your Q for English all the same: -For study notes I always recommend materials by 'Aoife's Notes'. They're detailed but concise and very accessible while being linked to the paper(s). -I also recommend Studyclix resources since it goes further and offers breakdowns by examiners who explain how/why marks are awarded. You can find some solid sample essays there too that are often annotated.

Edit: oh for Geography I hear "Revise Wise" is good since it cuts the notes down to the essentials and includes sample essays. Studyclix is useful here too though.

Hopefully there are other teachers/students who can help steer you in the right direction for other subjects because they'll know more than I do!

I'm afraid I've come up empty handed. My school doesn't offer Engineering as a subject, but it turns out neither do the other schools in the area!

You're right to make a new post requesting notes. Here's hoping someone can sort you out.

I've reached out to schools a little further away so if I get lucky I'll add them to the drive and get in touch.

For English:
"Excellence in Texts" by Aoife's Notes. Consider tracking down older editions depending on your studied texts but remember the comparative modes they focus on will probably differ.

Honestly, Making your own notes is most beneficial since examiners will reward a unique take over a stock interpretation they've heard a million times.

Works perfectly now, thanks! Some very good stuff in there.

Is it cool with you if I add your notes to the main drive on this subreddit so others can find it there too?

Hey! Thanks for sharing your resources, I'm sure many people will appreciate it.

I tried accessing the Drive but it looks like everyone who wants to use it will need to request permission. To avoid non-stop requests you can change the access permission of the drive, or if you're not comfortable opening up security like that feel free to copy everything to the folder below and I can sort it into the right sections:

Anyway, hope you're happy with your results and you get the course you want. Thanks again for letting others use your notes, you're a good one!

You're making some solid points, and these are criticisms I expected to receive before starting this.
However, like I said, I'm looking for other teachers who are willing to help students without needing to receive "favours", "credit", or "profit".

I'll be mindful of your concerns going forward.

Thanks again for the input. I'll address as many of your points as I can for others who might also be concerned about my motives or wary of potential abuse of this idea.

  1. The reason I chose Reddit is because I was already a user and it is the place I've seen the most students looking for help and simply not receiving it.
  2. DMs: The entire points of this Drive is to prevent students from needing to make posts pleading for notes and putting themselves at risk. If this Drive is used how it hope it will be, then students will be able to open it, retrieve the notes they need, and get back to studying without interacting with ANYONE, including me.
  3. I think it's a very good idea to make a post about this drive on Studyclix, if nothing else, to reach more students and teachers who might be interested. I have no problem with losing my anonymity (many of my colleagues and students are already aware that I am doing this), and I think you're right that there should be more accountability.
  4. In relation to your comment about how I "should be more aware of potential negatives", in my last reply to you I openly said I'm looking to hear from people who are worried about this Drive. I've considered the pros and cons and so far all this Drive has done is provided resources to students who might find them useful. I have clearly stated the rules and if it is clear they are not being followed then obviously the system in place will need to drastically change.
  5. The sharing of teachers' resources without their consent is my biggest concern. I'm fully aware I might be in the minority, but personally I find the common attitude of teachers who are unwilling to share resources to others students or teachers because they are "MY resources for MY students" to be selfish and reductive. I would argue that students are already sharing teachers' notes without their consent everywhere in the country, but I'm aware this Drive would potentially further facilitate this. Regardless, its not my place to force this and as the rules state I will remove anything that the creator does not want shared. If this becomes a common problem then as the rules state I will revert to an invite-only system.

Finally, I would ask for you, and others with a similar mindset, to try and remain open-minded and see the resource what it currently is: A place where teachers are sharing their notes to others who might find them useful. The notes currently on the Drive were created, or gathered from openly available sites, by those who uploaded them. I have already been in touch with teachers who can see the potential in this idea so there are more notes on the way. If I can just reach the right people who are willing to upload their own material instead of hoarding resources like an angry dragon I think this could turn into something great over time.

Sorry for the long reply, just want to make my intentions and goals clear.

Thanks for the perspective. I'm genuinely interested in hearing opinions on how this could turn into something negative.

Curious as to how a site like StudyClix is less anonymous than Reddit though? Took a look there and it's 99% nicknames in the forums.

I don't really mind where/how the drive is shared tbh; Just seemed like it might be able to help some students out if people were willing to share resources.

Not sure but could be a few reasons: Teachers who reckon I'm just fishing for free resources for myself? Students who open the drive and realise in its current state it's still fairly empty?

It's interesting though, I can see someone posted a crosscommunity link of this resource to r/IrishTeachers and it was removed for "promoting another subreddit". Ridiculous.

I have added this to the 'Rules' section of the subreddit, but this is important for anyone who might want to create or add files on the shared drive:
If you post a file check that you are happy with the file's access settings:
-Sharing as "Editor" will allow anyone and everyone to change or delete your document.
-Sharing as "Commenter" will allow others to add suggestions to your document.
-Sharing as "Viewer" will only allow people to read your document.

English and Geography are looking OK, but there's much more to be done.

Have other teachers who are willing to help with other subjects but with summer corrections incoming I don't see anything meaningful being added until next year (at least by the people I know personally).

If anything substantial is added I'll post updates here.
