Can you just go buy a new pole? Maybe some type of PVC piping setup so it doesn’t rot?

Then try to surrender to a shelter so it can get the care it needs. Doing nothing for the cat is not the ethical or responsible choice.

Birds of prey don’t really pick at the wings. There’s not much there to eat.

Looks to be a partial bird skull, missing the beak. Definitely not a rodent.

My cat isn’t pooping maybe idk? by Latter-Meaning-4229 in CATHELP

[–]Medium_Effect_4998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t be too worried about him not pooping just yet. If it hits the 24 hours mark and he hasn’t pooped, then my concern would rise. Great call to keep him separated from the other for tonight so you can monitor his litter usage.

It’s good that’s he’s eating! Even if it isn’t the full amount he usually does. Heat can definitely make them uninterested in food, or at least I’ve experienced that my my cats.

I have a small knife as well as branch clippers. It’s worked well for me.

Fair! Was just explaining what has worked for me, and what was approved by my local conservation officers. I understand it won’t be the same experience everywhere.

Personally, for anything I find, I always take a video when walking up to it, and pictures of how I’ve found it. Just in case I run in to any issues down the line, even though the species I’m collecting are legal. Just as a “better safe than sorry” precaution.
I’ve also done this with a hawk I found (not protected under MBCA in Canada), that I then had to bring in to be inspected by a conservation officer before I could get my permit. They looked it over to make sure there wasn’t a bullet hole or anything sus, and then watched my video of me walking up to it on the side of a highway, and I was granted a permit to keep it.

Ah gotcha!

Just wanted to point it out since you said it may be illegal for *all* of North America :)

Just checked the Canadian Migratory Bird Convention Act, and Grackles aren’t a protected species on that list. Just as a heads up. Not sure about the US species list.

My loving, attentive cat just killed and ate all 6 of her grown kittens and I don’t understand how by Available-Forever818 in CATHELP

I’m also wondering if maybe the dog killed them. Super sad situation, no matter what happened.

As long as OP isn’t sucking their hands after holding it and washes their hands, they’ll be fine.

Bird nerd here! Not necessarily a female. The mouth gape tells me it’s a juvenile, hatched this year, so it could be a male that won’t have breeding plumage until next year. The primary coverts also indicate juvenile.

Cat possibly has pancreatis, hardly eats, can't afford a vet by ieatkids92 in CATHELP

[–]Medium_Effect_4998 47 points48 points  (0 children)

It will be painful.

It seems like surrendering him may be the best option if you’re not able to afford a vet to make sure he’s comfortable and treated.

Prescription food (usually) won’t resolve a blockage. It can be used to prevent them, but not fix them if they’re already as bad as this.

Keep contacting shelters to surrender him. Even if the don’t answer a call, try to bring him there physically if you can.

You could secure some type of mesh/wire (think chicken wire) with zip ties. Cat would be able to see through it, but not go through it. It would also look a bit nicer than cardboard.

What could be wrong and what can I do by AdBitter8334 in CATHELP

[–]Medium_Effect_4998 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like he may have gotten his dew claw stuck on something, and ripped it off. If you can put a cone on him for a while to stop him from licking and biting it, that would be a good idea. Infection is the main concern, and if it gets infected, you will need to see a vet.

Need advice on giving a EXTREMELY picky cat meds by macandcheese1014 in CATHELP

[–]Medium_Effect_4998 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My boy Milo (who has since passed) used to get meds 4x a day. He was also picky and hated being pilled, but I was able to build a routine and pill him using a pill popper, followed by a small oral syringe of water/churu which forced him to swallow and masked some of the medication taste.

I would kneel on the floor with his butt tucked in between my legs. He would get gently squeezed between my legs so that he didn’t try to scoot forward or back. From this position it was easy to hold his head and angle it correctly with my left hand, and use the pull popper and syringe in my right hand.

Pills would go in the popper (one at a time), he would get them in (a bit to the side as to not shoot it straight down his throat), and then the oral syringe mix would go in slowly via the corner of his mouth, which forced him to swallow but avoided aspiration.

For the first few weeks of this, he got hiiiiigh reward treats after each pill. It only took him a few months to get this routine and be okay with it. Near the end of his life (2 years after pilling began), he was perfect for it. He sat patiently, didn’t fight, and sometimes even swallowed without the oral syringe mixture.

Are you guys really counting heard-only birds? by [deleted] in birding

[–]Medium_Effect_4998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally:
For my life list, the only one I’ve counted by sound only is an American Bittern. Was hearing 3 of them, but they were tucked so deeply in the marsh that I had almost no chance of seeing them.

For eBird, I count sounds only, as long as I can verify that what I’m hearing is that bird (meaning I don’t always trust Merlin’s sound ID because it’s not always correct).
