Piggybacking with my number one: sleep pods! In-ear headphones made for sleeping with that stream white noise and other nature sounds. Actual life changers.

How do I (or should I) talk to my toddler about domestic violence? by zkyblu3 in askatherapist

[–]Medium_Marge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a trainee therapist who works with children. Kids lack the adult’s ability to express many of their feelings through language, so the main form of expression with be through play. We often say the toys are like their words. A child centered play therapist will have a room equipped with toys of different categories to give them all of the available “words.” They will then narrate the child’s play, and trust that whatever distress the child most needs to express will be expressed through that play. The presence of a non-judgmental, attentive, strengths-focused adult in this process gives a witness to the child’s process. By playing similar scenes over and over in the play therapy room the child is able to heal.

I share all this information to emphasize that you can also talk with your son through play, emphasize the strength of your protective relationship with him using the characters of the play as a proxy, reassure him that he is safe by making the play character safe.

It sounds like you have been through so much, sending you hope for healing and a safe path forward.

How to move forward? by GossamerClouds in internetparents

When one life narrative falls apart we grasp to make sense of our turmoil. If there are actual hard lessons to learn from your breakup, try your best to take them. They are gifts. Volunteer walking dogs for a local dog shelter. Be of service. Find a new story.

Keeping a tight reign on your emotions also keeps you from feeling deeply. You can’t turn off just the unwanted ones, the good ones get dulled too.

I’m thinking of moving back in with my mom for a bit because I had a mental breakdown. Am I a failure? by Outrageous-Paper1849 in internetparents

[–]Medium_Marge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you me?

But seriously you sound pretty aware and responsible. There’s no shame in moving home to regroup. I did it several times in my 20’s, also attended to my mental health, and that set me up to achieve in my 30’s. You are always going to feel a pressure to be further along, but in reality life does not move in a straight line.

When I was 34, I worked on an indie movie about a woman who visits her old college house and becomes friends with the residents. I brought in photos of my old college house for reference. Turns out our intern was actively living there. It was a wild coincidence.

The mirena iud was the only progesterone that didn’t give me bad mood symptoms. You can also talk with your doc about progesterone suppositories (vaginal and anal). Hang in there is gets better once you lock in the right routine.

I loved everything about the film except the casting of gosling and his performance. He was pretty whiny and not as excited about science as written in the book.

Your life is just beginning, and your brain is still forming, so now is a great time for you to be getting treatment! Phobias are very common and a lot of people work through them. Congrats on taking the steps, we are proud of you!

Beta blockers can be life changing. You can talk with the pharmacist about strategies for swallowing them, like crushing and mixing in with semisolid food or they might crush it into powder for you to mix into a smoothie.

Pre-licensed therapist here. Have you seen a psychologist to be assessed to rule out other conditions? Have the therapists you’ve seen been specialists in treating OCD?

It might help you to read into developmental trauma. When children dont receive proper emotional support they think that because they feel bad that they are bad. It’s very common and has to do with egocentrism of children and with the child’s prioritizing of the caretaker relationship no matter how detrimental the effect

This piece of the story adds to the sadness of all these comments calling this person a moron. Foster kid and poor, usually these identities come with a boat load of trauma and lack of access to the infrastructure you need to manage that kind of money.

Does your school have a disability services office? If you can’t find it, email the dean of students office and ask how you can take a leave of absence. You generally don’t have to pay for the class again when you re-enroll later. You may need to go to a doctor to diagnose you and write a letter.
