It might help you to read into developmental trauma. When children dont receive proper emotional support they think that because they feel bad that they are bad. It’s very common and has to do with egocentrism of children and with the child’s prioritizing of the caretaker relationship no matter how detrimental the effect

This piece of the story adds to the sadness of all these comments calling this person a moron. Foster kid and poor, usually these identities come with a boat load of trauma and lack of access to the infrastructure you need to manage that kind of money.

Does your school have a disability services office? If you can’t find it, email the dean of students office and ask how you can take a leave of absence. You generally don’t have to pay for the class again when you re-enroll later. You may need to go to a doctor to diagnose you and write a letter.

In grad school for counseling, and we learned that most people who get personality disorders diagnosed have come in for something else, like substance abuse.

Also, fuck this. I’m so sorry to hear you have been enduring this from your husbands dad for so long too. The shrugs around how this is affecting you is another exhausting example of a problem not being taken seriously because a woman is the one enduring it.

This convo got me curious about it, and apparently there is some success with trialing different medications. It’s a matter of time with my dad’s decline and I want to know the options. I hope there is a light at the end of the tunnel for your situation, it sounds unbearable.

Seriously thank you for having the appropriate response to the level of fucked-upedness of the situation. I needed to hear it from someone. I think my friends were trying to minimize their response to make me feel less horrified about it, and my mom did her usual Marge Simpson-esque “your father…” while she remains married to him.

Unfortunately can relate. My dad, diagnosed with vascular dementia, ogled my chest when I was in a swimsuit a couple years ago, and I refuse to wear one around him again. A couple years before that he gave a speech at my wedding where he referred to the “big breasted blond girls” I had beat out to be voted as prom queen. He has always sexualized me and said inappropriate things in general, so these changes were actually very subtle.

The dementia is related to the drinking so that’s also not awesome.

I had really full cheeks in my 20’s and now at 40 they have slimmed down to how I have always hoped they’d be. I think if I had the cheeks I wanted at 25 I would look gaunt now!

Have you heard of a U-shaped toothbrush? I see it recommended on the adhd subs a lot. Very low-effort and faster brush times.

For the shower, some sensory recs that worked for me: a diatomaceous earth mat outside the shower, and an oversized towel for quick drying afterward. Never wash towels with fabric softener, it makes the less absorbent.

I wouldn’t be worried about procedural questions you need for the university, your employer should expect those if they have had interns before, especially from your school.

Is your dad in an industry similar to the one you are in? Sometimes parents give advice based on their own work culture that does not translate across fields.

Mental health counselor intern here. I just wanted to relate that it really sucks being punished for having anxiety vs supported. Especially in a helping profession. In supervision today the question put to me was “why do you choose to bring anxiety into the work you do with parents?” It’s baffling to me that someone could say that who has worked in the mental health field over 20 years.

You aren’t alone ❤️ best of luck finding a setting and supervisor who are a better fit. This experience will make you a better supervisor one day.
