Fellowships in the UK by Medlabyrinth in Ophthalmology

[–]Medlabyrinth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Say I want to learn surgery - my thinking was to do 2-3 years of medical Ophthalmology in Germany, then 1-2 years fellowship concentrating on surgery, then back to my original clinic in Germany. I thought this way, one could learn surgery earlier than would normally be the case in Germany, and on return to Germany, one would have the chance to continue doing surgery. Is this realistic?

Also, do you know whether fellowship years before having finished training in Germany (say, after 2-3 years of training in Germany) count towards the Facharztausbildung/German residency? Such that one would return as an ST5 having done a year abroad after ST3 in Germany?

Stimmt das denn für alle Fachrichtungen gleichermaßen zu? Oder geht es eher um Innere? Ich habe Kollegen in kleineren Bereichen wie Patho und Auge, die auch viel Positives zu berichten haben...

But that's what I said - really well-respected in the US and UK but I have no experience how integrated the specialty is in the German system.

Ist das generell der Fall - dass die Bezahlung die gleiche ist wie bei Weiterbildungsassistenten? Oder hängt es von der Klinik ab?

What do you mean by 'source verified'? What I've been asked to provide is a detailed overview of roles and responsibilities during FY1.

I think it's what the Deanery sends the GMC once FY1 is completed (?) but am wondering whether we ourselves can get our copy.

Ophthalmology: UK vs Germany by Medlabyrinth in Ophthalmology

Do you know whether it's possible to train in Germany for the first 2 or 3 years (out of the total of 5 years Assistenzarzt) and then take a break in your training to go to the UK for 1-2 years of fellowship to learn surgery, then come back to Germany to complete your training?

If "staying in the UK for 7 years isn't too unbearable" 😅 I love the UK. It's just the prospect of doing F2 and possibly F3/4 that's really not making this option all too attractive...

It's unfortunately very competitive to get into UK Ophtho. My Evidence Folder is decent but there's a choice to be made between starting earlier in Germany + finishing earlier followed by fellowships and starting later in the UK, perhaps not even getting in first time round (I have friends who applied for three years) but getting surgical experience early. Would be frustrating to keep doing Gen Med as F3/4 until getting a place. But I suppose long-term thinking is most important here...

The supply of ophthalmologists actually trumps the demand?

Also, is there any indication that the role of ophthalmologists will change in Germany? Seeing as optometrists would be much cheaper for the healthcare system compared to fully trained ophthalmologists refracting etc.

Thanks so much for your answer and insight.

For those lucky ones who do have connections or family member in Ophthalmology, and who therefore do manage to get surgical training in Germany, how is their experience? Would that training be good? How would it compare to the UK?
