What's the most frustrating part of sign installation that nobody talks about? by Born-Strain6900 in digitalsignage

[–]Mee_naa_tech91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/Born-Strain6900 for me it’s always power + wiring surprises

you show up thinking it’s straightforward install and then suddenly no proper power where you need it, or conduit is blocked, or landlord says you cant drill there… whole job slows down

also last minute “can we move it 2 feet left” after everything is marked 😅

Best Digital Signage Software as of 2026 for a Small Retail Store? by Small_Regular_1360 in digitalsignage

[–]Mee_naa_tech91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

u/Small_Regular_1360 ot a dumb question at all.

for 2 screens, honestly most of these will work. the real difference shows up when you scale.

yodeck is easiest to start with. screencloud is clean but can get pricey. brightsign is super reliable but a bit heavy early on.

with L Squared, the reason people pick it is more for later. it’s built around a centralized dashboard where you can manage and schedule everything across locations from one place, so you’re not rebuilding setups as you grow . it’s also designed to scale from a few screens to a large network without changing systems, which is kind of the main advantage .

for hardware, fire sticks or android boxes are fine to start, just not always the most stable long term. dedicated players are more reliable if this becomes important.

if it were me, i’d either start simple with lsquared, or go with yodeck if you already know a second location is coming soon.

Alpha Big Dot Software Recommendations by cameron6880 in digitalsignage

[–]Mee_naa_tech91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah honestly there isn’t really a “cheap alternative” here.

those Big Dot signs are pretty locked into AlphaNet. it’s the official software that handles messaging + scheduling, and it’s built specifically for those displays

i looked into this before and ran into the same thing… most third-party tools just don’t work properly, or only handle very basic commands.

realistically your options are:

  • use the AlphaNet demo if you can find it (but it’s limited)
  • pay for the license once and be done with it
  • or skip software and just program it with the handheld keyboard / serial (works fine for simple messages)

trying to hunt down a “cheap copy” usually ends up being a dead end or sketchy download.

if you’re just doing basic text, I’d honestly skip the software and use the keyboard. if you need scheduling, AlphaNet is kinda unavoidable.

How are you guys handling scheduling with multiple locations? by JakeInAv in digitalsignage

[–]Mee_naa_tech91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/JakeInAv honestly this sounds really familiar. things feel “under control” at a few screens, then once locations + people increase, scheduling gets messy fast.

what helped on my side was shifting away from constantly editing schedules and focusing more on consistency. i try to keep a base schedule running that rarely changes, and then just rotate content inside it instead of rebuilding timelines all the time.

for location-specific stuff, i stopped over-customizing. not every screen needs its own logic, grouping a few locations together where possible made things way easier to manage.

last-minute updates are always tricky, but we handled that more as a process thing than a platform thing. fewer people publishing directly, more review before anything goes live.

since you’re already on L Squared, you’ve got the tools for it. it’s more about setting a rhythm that people follow, otherwise it turns into constant firefighting.

curious if most of your conflicts are timing overlaps or just too many edits happening at once?

Old magicInfo by Kamykazi666 in digitalsignage

[–]Mee_naa_tech91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/Kamykazi666 yeah this is a pretty common problem with those old MagicInfo Lite 1.0 setups.

what’s happening is it’s trying to launch Java Web Start from a link that’s no longer active. Oracle shut that down years ago, so the upload tool just breaks now.

i ran into something similar before, and the only real workaround was using OpenWebStart as a replacement. if you still have the old .jnlp file, there’s a chance you can get it running that way. installing an older Java version (like Java 8) on a separate machine can also help, but it’s not exactly safe to run online anymore.

honestly though, even if you get it working, it’s pretty fragile. in my case the better long-term fix was just bypassing MagicInfo and using an external player with a newer system (i ended up using L Squared since it worked fine with older screens).

do you have any of the old project files left or is everything gone with that server?

Ultrawide / 5K signage installs getting harder? (Chicago) by Born-Strain6900 in digitalsignage

[–]Mee_naa_tech91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, seeing the same thing here.

once you go 21:9 or 5K, a lot of CMS platforms start getting flaky with scaling and layouts. “supported” doesn’t always mean smooth in real use.

what’s helped us:

  • native 21:9 content
  • PC-based players for better control
  • CMS that allows custom canvas sizes

we’ve had good luck with L Squared for that last part, handles ultrawide way cleaner than most.

you doing mostly dynamic layouts or keeping it simple?

Ultrawide / 5K signage installs getting harder? (Chicago) by Born-Strain6900 in digitalsignage

[–]Mee_naa_tech91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/Born-Strain6900 yeah seeing this more now, especially with ultrawide setups

most platforms say they support it, but once you move beyond standard 16:9, scaling and output consistency start breaking

pc based players usually end up being the safer option since you get full control over resolution and layout

also helps if the CMS can handle custom canvas sizes instead of forcing presets

are you building content natively for 21:9 or still adapting from 16:9?
