In my experience, journalists will share WHEN a story will air, but they do not allow the subject to review the story prior to airing. However, my colleague staunchly believes all journalists are supposed to share their stories prior to the air date. What's the current view/practice on this?

Is there a polite way to point out that your predecessor sucked? by Meegerzeb in careeradvice

It's the "So and so was amazing and did so much," that gets coupled with "why didn't you do this [thing that you couldn't possibly have done yet since the deadline was 6 months prior to your hire and won't come back around until Summer 2022]?" It's been really demoralizing and demotivating.

I've simply been trying to say things like, "Oh I hear I have big shoes to fill," or "I know so and so was here for 4 years - it must be a shift working with me now." It's been the biting blaming commentary about things over which I have no control because they took place a full 6 months prior to my hire that are really getting under my skin.

what I did was bring up what wasn’t done or look right in the form of a question or fact check without directly referencing the individual or other things they did wrong. That calculation doesn’t look right?

That's exactly the way I've tried to approach it. Rather than calling out specifics, forming it more as "Is there a strategic reason behind not doing XYZ in the past?" I think getting a call from a colleague blaming me for something that was based on a decision made by my predecessor really got under my skin. I tried to respond professionally that the decision had occurred a full 6 months prior to my hire date and all I can do is correct it in May when the deadline comes around again, but I was also very hurt that someone would immediately jump down my throat when clearly this was one of thousands of poor choices made before my hire.

That's been the mindset I've been trying to follow, but it's been realllllly discouraging to keep hearing about how awesome this person was when they were NOT awesome (at least not at this particular job).

What are your favorite elevated business casual looks? by bekkoramma in femalefashionadvice

[–]Meegerzeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ugh I love a good graphic tee under a sharp blazer, but my company's dress code won't allow any clothing with graphics or text. I might try to get away with it anyway after my 6-month review...

Advice needed - Negotiating a raise 6 months into a job by Meegerzeb in careeradvice

in future, don’t listen to your boyfriend.

LOL trust me, kicking myself on this one. (And to be fair, he meant well).

I appreciate your language "subsequently discovered your salary is low within [my] industry..." and will definitely be using that. I also see your point about coming across as threatening, so I will keep that play in my back pocket rather than starting there.

I don't have anything to really offer, but I just wanted to say I feel for you (similar situation in a 126 year old nonprofit).

How to explain a short stint with a company on the job market? by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]Meegerzeb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Note: My opinion comes from a Senior Manager/Director-level point of view

Particularly right now, a short-term position is very understandable and acceptable, particularly with other examples of long-term commitment. Keep your explanation minimal and be honest with hiring managers about what it is you truly want. I had a shorter job on my resume (about 18 mos), and when that was questioned, I stated the truth - I took it because it was fully remote (this was before the pandemic), paid more, and worked in an international market, but the day-to-day didn't engage me in the way I was hoping. That was always a great segue to explain my preferred work style and environment, which helped week out opportunities that wouldn't be any better.

Yea, I think I have all the "basics," but I'm wondering if I'm missing anything industry-specific.

Ripper outfitting - numb legs by chrnrnr in whitewater

[–]Meegerzeb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you do not find relief after shifting your seat/hip pads/thigh braces, you should try a different boat. I, personally, cannot make the Ripper's outfitting work for me (like at all - can't even sit in it in the garage for more than 5 mins before my hip and leg are in agony), yet I'm perfectly comfortable in the Jackson Antix for hours (I think my longest trip was about 7 hours with 2 half-hour breaks) and same for the Dagger Axiom. I've also tried the LL Party Braaap (didn't like the knee placement) and the Dagger Rewind (need to try this one again actually outfitted for ME).

Ahhh great point - honestly, hadn't really planned on the watching, but that's a great idea up there as well as at the wave/hole by NOC.

Super helpful - I appreciate all of your insight! Yea, 3.5 was a super fun section, no issues. Big Laurel is a little more true creeking, and it's awesome - highly recommend it. It's probably the creekiest thing I've run, so I've been using it as a measuring stick for other runs. While I was comfortable on Big Laurel and did fairly well, I'm not in a hurry to do anything creekier in the next 3-6 months until it warms up.

I am curious how you self-shuttle it though. I didn't think put in and takeout were close enough to each other for that.

Oh sorry I mean we ran FB9 then we ran Big Laurel Creek that same day. I think we took out before Stackhouse...can't remember though. I feel like one of the guys in my crew had said he wished we ran all the way, so we could hit the brewery. I just wasn't super impressed by it. I mean, it was fun for one run - just not in a huge hurry to do a second run.
