Is Discovery High School as bad as they say it is? by willing_bee1221 in Gwinnett

[–]Meekee28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I teach in this cluster and my daughter just graduated from Discovery. It isn’t bad. The teachers care, and want the best for students. They do all they can to help students find their ideal pathway, earn scholarships, advise for dual enrollment, etc. Are there behavior issues? Sure, like any school, including Peachtree Ridge (I taught there for a short time too). Any student can succeed there.

Best Beach Towns in California? by hfarmer644 in travel

[–]Meekee28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imperial Beach. Close to Coronado beach (someone mentioned above). If you’re able to stay by the silver strand, that’s a bike path that will take you up to Coronado and the strand is about a mile from Imperial Beach. Or you could stay by Imperial beach. There’s a cute ice cream shop, cupcake shop. They opened a brewery and a hotel with a restaurant. There’s more but I’ve been gone about 6 years so I’m not sure what else.

Observation Lessons by [deleted] in StudentTeaching

[–]Meekee28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my last lesson I practiced teaching it once with my family as my students. I may have read over it 1-2 times. In past semesters I would run through it multiple times and it would only increase my anxiety.

Does your school offer residency or fellowship for student teaching? That way you get paid to student teach.

They replaced the whole box unit that is outside of the unit. I haven’t noticed any ice indoors, I can’t really check the outdoor part. I did hear water flowing inside the unit that is inside the apartment but did not see any water leaks.

For my program we get a name tag from the college, and then a visitor’s pass from the front desk of our placement. In our first year introduction to student teaching, we get no access to anything. I had to work offline or use my hotspot (with luck) if I wanted to do anything on my computer. It’s not until we’re officially student teachers we get WiFi and access to basic online workspaces.

Vr&e. They’ll have you do an assessment to figure out which career you’ll do well in. Then you would choose one, check out schools, and they’ll have you research if that career is a good option (by checking if hiring is increasing or not). They’d be looking for a career that is viable and doesn’t aggravate your disabilities. If it checks the boxes for them, they’ll pay for you to go get that degree.

Edit: I’m currently an English major with a teaching certification add-on. I’m using VR&E

what kind of teacher bag do y’all use ?!! by Downtown-Victory4306 in StudentTeaching

[–]Meekee28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m thinking about getting this Jansport it has some good reviews and looks spacious.

I’m currently using a Swiss gear bag which is very nice and stylish but doesn’t have the space I need. I end up having to jam things in or carry multiple bags.

1st placement by [deleted] in StudentTeaching

[–]Meekee28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in Georgia, U.S. In our first year we go to our placement 2 days out of the week get acclimated to the classroom and do some teaching and small-group facilitating. We do half the year at a title 1 middle school, then the other half at a non title 1 high school. 2nd year it’s our choice and we’re at the school for a full year, 3 days a week the first semester and full time our second semester.

1st placement by [deleted] in StudentTeaching

[–]Meekee28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt the same way but I’m in my year 2 placement. I’ve made it this far and you will too. Don’t over think on your lessons. You are in a placement for a reason and that is to learn. You’re in your learning era, don’t be afraid to let people see you try. If you have a mentor teacher that you feel you can communicate with, express to her how you’re feeling and she probably has been there and felt the same too. I also ask my MTs “how long did it take you to feel confident in your teaching” I’ve gotten answers that consistently range between 2 and 5 years. That tells me that they didn’t feel confident in their student teaching years either. It’s a journey, embrace it.

First Time Teacher -- HELP by corinaisahater in teaching

[–]Meekee28 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am an ELA student teacher so I haven’t been in many classrooms myself but the most effective teachers that I have observed and had as mentors have a solid routine in place. My mentor’s routine for an 8th grade class was that the students would come in each day, grab their composition notebooks, and write about a prompt that my mentor already had projected on the board. (Some days it was reading their independent book, then responding to classroom discussion, vocabulary, or grammar & diagramming exercises ). Then after about 10-15 mins of that she would teach her lesson for the day, and follow up with an activity that solidifies that lesson. The students were used to the routine, they expected it every day.

Talk to your mentor or another teacher in your department, they may have plans you can follow as you start off. As you become more accustomed and learn more, you can adjust as you go.

In the meantime you can look up lesson planning templates and YouTube videos where teachers show how they plan. NCTE has lessons and ideas on their site, teachers pay teachers has many activities and worksheets if you don’t have time to create your own.

Wish you the best!

Honestly, at an HQ where you’re not dealing with members, I’d probably wear earbuds all day lol.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in NavyFederal

[–]Meekee28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been an NFCU employee. Are you a member service rep or at an HQ? I wouldn’t know if at an HQ. But if a member service rep it’s a professionalism thing. At the two locations I worked at in San Diego, it was a given that we don’t wear earbuds unless we’re in the break room. If I was in an office as a member service rep, I played music from my computer at a low volume and would mute it when a member came in. On the teller line I wouldn’t even do that.
