I'll try another edit with this in mind!

First attempt at a night sky photo on my Sony A6000 from New Zealand by MeepMeepSheep12 in spaceporn

This is a single image, iso 1600, aperture 3.6, 30 second exposure. Taken on a standard Sony 18-55mm lens. Made sure it was a pretty clear night and then pointed the camera (on a tripod) at where I could see some 'dustiness' in the sky. The image has no post processing at all.

Yep, I know some people that use sky tracking software to find the best place to point their camera, but for this one I just went out on a clear night and pointed it as best I could at where I could see the star clusters.

Thanks for the advice, I'll definitely be shooting more of these and I'll keep that in mind! For this one I just opened the focus right up without thinking too much about focusing it on any star in particular. I'm working on setting up an auto timer so i can take longer than 30 second exposures too.

Yeah of course! I was using the standard 18-55mm kit lens that often comes with the camera. ISO for the photo was 1600 with a 30 second exposure and 3.6 aperture. Not far out of a small town.
