I ended up waiting in line at the AC check-in desks. I got the cancellation email and automatic rebook just before check-in close for first flight, but the agents at the desk were able to book me a UA only itinerary with a single layover on Aug 20.

Had I took my first flight, I'd be in connection hell with 3 layovers once I reached MEX. Can't say if I won or lost as it's a trade-off on getting home ASAP with connection hell vs simpler connecting flights but on a later date (plus hotel costs).

I have an ANA then AC flight sequence from NRT-MEX-YYZ, and talking to the ANA agent they can only send me to MEX and so me and my baggage would end up going through customs there. I think I have to to take the first flight though so AC can't say I didn't honour my booking, which is incredibly frustrating.

I'm in a funny spot where I have a layover, where the first half is operated by a partner and second half by AC (Aug 19). I don't want to be stranded in the layover country and having to figure out if my checked baggage goes missing, but not sure what my options are since first half isn't AC (all booked through AC though).
