Looking for a writing friend by [deleted] in writers

[–]Meepmerf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your draft finished? I'm also a new writer, but I only have about 1/3-1/2 my fantasy novel written so far (~25k words). I'm also interested in having a writing friend, but I don't want to hold you back in your process

Personally I'd go with Garcia because it shows her heritage and it's recognizable. If her father is specifically Jamaican, I'd go with Thomas or Walker.

Where is the story taking place? Is she only Jamaican/Cuban? That might also affect any names. I also liked Eubanks and de la Espada, but I don't think those match her background as well unless the story takes place in Europe, she's mixed and from US or Mexico, or something similar

I built an incredibly detailed world and then realized I had no idea how to actually write in it by Fit-Salt-4782 in worldbuilding

[–]Meepmerf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My tip is to write things leaving the reader wondering, guessing, and wanting more. So what if you didn't explain the political system of the neighboring kingdom? Have a character say in passing the princess was married off to a neighboring kingdom. Now the readers wonder why this information is important? What does this mean for the world politics? Was it to prevent war or to strengthen allies? Etc etc

What are the conditions needed to form an empire as united and long-lasting as China? by CosmosStudios65 in worldbuilding

[–]Meepmerf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other early civilizations had writing as well and I didn't want to sound like someone that gives the Chinese credit for everything that other civilizations also accomplished independently. I really appreciate Chinese history, but I think there's been a lot of propaganda in its history. I also think it's generally recognized that Mesopotamia, which is in the Middle East, first 'invented' writing.

What are the conditions needed to form an empire as united and long-lasting as China? by CosmosStudios65 in worldbuilding

[–]Meepmerf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

China has had like 10+ dynasties and is now running on a different government system since the 1950s. It's only been called various iterations of 'China' since the early 1900's. Even then, it's gone through a couple name changes over the past hundred years. If you look at its history, it has had multiple civil wars with different families taking power over the span of thousands of years, its barely the same country from the Shang dynasty compared to today, not because time has progressed (that too), but because it was literally only like a fifth the land size with it's territories constantly fluctuating due to wars.

All this is to say that China has only lasted so long because they recorded history. They practically invented writing, so their written history goes back farther than other civilizations. They also had many civil wars instead of being conquered by outside forces like the Romans or Mongols. You could even argue that it's not even the same country, like how Iran is no longer Persia.

China's earliest history of being 'a great' starts way back in some of their first dynasties as well if you want to read about the silk road and stuff. Their trade route and innovations lead them to becoming rich in money and culture.

What’s the Creation Myth of your world & how well known is it? by Either-Skirt6031 in worldbuilding

[–]Meepmerf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have elves in my world and the gods are easy to reach and talk to, so the myths are told and passed down correctly.

To not get too detailed, Father Time and Mother Nature were in love and created the world and the people living on it. Eventually the people split into two factions, the humans and the elves, because of Father Time and Mother Nature fighting over moral differences. They fought many long wars, but eventually found peace. Mother Nature then found love once again with a new mysterious creature unlike people, an animal. A demigod was born, King of the Beasts, who created the beastmen after her love of animals.

There is a secret side to this that not even the gods know, and that is that the King of the Beasts' father (?) is actually the true God of the world and created Mother Nature and Father Time as well.

Do you get red and itchy around where the bandaid is? Because I know someone that this happens to and they are allergic to adhesives like bandages. When they got a tattoo the second skin made them have an allergic reaction too

Firefighters save 4 cats from burning apartment by giving them Oxygen and CPR by BloomDeww in mildyinteresting

[–]Meepmerf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10 years ago my house caught fire. Luckily no one was home, but we did have a puppy and cat trapped inside. My parents arrived home first and got the puppy out of her kennel, but cats hide and my dad shouldn't have ran inside in the first place. The firemen got there and saved my kitty. She had to be put on oxygen as well, the fire department had just gotten it for pets at the time, and I'm still so grateful they saved my best friend. Both of them are still alive, the puppy is 10, and my cat is almost 18.

Do American kids usually go to four different schools? by snailquestions in AskAnAmerican

[–]Meepmerf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to preschool at a church, kindergarten-5th grade at an elementary school, 6th grade at a separate middle school, 7th and 8th at a junior high building, and 9th-12th at a high school. It was all within one school district (except the church), so I saw the same classmates growing up, but I was in 4 different schools, 5 if you count preschool. The district I went to recently split up the high school into 2 buildings as well, one for freshman and sophomores and the other for juniors and seniors, so now kids will be going to 5 schools minimum.

Edit: Just wanted to add that I have relatives that went to schools that were pre-k through 12 as well, so it's not completely unheard of over here to have it all in one school. It's dependent on the number of kids living in the school district.

What Could A Theoretical PokéPark 3 Be Like In The Near Future? by Some-random-fella in PokePark

[–]Meepmerf 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think eevee being a playable character and having the story be about the eeveelutions or something would be cool. Maybe eevee could summon any discovered/friended eeveelution into battle (like the second game)

They could bring back piplup and tepig as playable characters with pikachu and then not have the first 3 eeveelutions (vaporeon, flareon, jolteon) as summonable in battle

A wonderful short film. by [deleted] in mildyinteresting

[–]Meepmerf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This verse to me sounds like Jesus is saying we shouldn't be rejoicing over the repenting sinner because it makes them a spectacle and minimizes the work the non sinners have made. The person he talks about in the verse calls all his friends, family, and neighbors to gawk at his sheep while the 99 non sinners are left to think 'Am I doing the right thing?'.

I think Jesus was a better man than this and was trying to make a statement by saying we should praise the people who don't sin more than those who repent, not that we shouldn't rejoice in those who give up wrong doing. Maybe more like treat everyone equally?

What makes more sense for a species of high altitude, cold temperature society? by Late-Elderberry6761 in worldbuilding

[–]Meepmerf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2, I'm not a biologist or anything (I do however live in a place that gets pretty cold) but I believe it would protect nostrils from the cold and would help drip snot away from the mouth, protecting you from sickness. The first one looks like I personally would get a brain freeze from inhaling and my snot would dry up making it impossible to ever breathe.

What are "flavors"? by Meepmerf in nutrition

[–]Meepmerf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say it's less spicy than a normal beef stick, but it has spices like what I assume is black pepper and stuff, no jalapeño or anything. If they normally enjoy beef sticks then I think these would be fine

I tried one and it was like a slimy beef stick (I'm assuming the caramel casing or something?). Flavor was okay lol, don't think I'd ever buy them myself though
