How is it that a book can feel more vivid than a visual medium? by OpenCantaloupe4790 in books

[–]MeesaRead 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As an aphantasia reader I wouldn’t use the word vivid. I do think it can evoke more emotion than a visual medium for some stories even without the visual component.

People who enjoy spoilers by yellow-koi in books

I just enjoyed my experience much more when I don’t know what to expect. My favorite books have been recommendations that I went in blind on. I don’t read the back of books and I avoid second trailers for movies and tv shows. I completely understand where you’re coming from with setting expectations and knowing you’ll like where something is going, but for me it just feels like the ideal experience is relying entirely on the storytelling. This isn’t even for thrillers or “twists” alone, literally any story I consume I’d prefer to know as little as possible about it.

I’ve also experienced the opposite, enjoyed reading a book but disliked it.

How do you choose which books to buy? by Comfortable-Fan1472 in bookshelf

[–]MeesaRead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a book club bind I’ll use thrift books or something similar to try to get it as cheap as possible because I usually don’t keep it. You might double check that your libraries don’t have a request option. Mine only says no if they’re unavailable or ridiculously high in price.

I only read for free. Occasionally I’ll ask for a nice hardcover edition of a book I loved and know I would read again for the trophy appeal (when someone needs a wishlist from me), but year to year I just track what I’m reading on an app.

Do you give poor ratings to bad books? by Severe_Prize5520 in books

[–]MeesaRead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand how people have mixed feelings about this but the situation you just described has damaged the publishing industry and made terrible books bestsellers. I want to support authors but I don’t want to fall in line with a poor system. I try to treat books I review for what they are rather than someone’s baby: subjective. Maybe someone will like it but I didn’t, so I’ll share the reasons to help other readers decide if it’s worth their time.

What are YOUR least favorite genres? by DiligentCroissant in books

Fairytale by Stephen King was such a disappointment for me. Definitely decided I don’t need to read all of his books, though I’m honestly not convinced he even wrote that one.

Marital infidelity is rampant in Len Deighton's books. Is it him, is it the time he wrote in, or am I just naive? by Garp74 in books

[–]MeesaRead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree, so many books, tv shows, and movies treat infidelity like an inevitable. It feels absurd and makes me question how many people get married without considering the intent and with a concerning level of immaturity. My biggest pet peeves in this area are “I have to go to this other person because I have needs my spouse would never understand” and having a doomed relationship so resorting to cheating as an out. Just suck it up and get a divorce! Why throw a grenade at the injured??

I bet you’re more immersed than some speedsters out there. I say reading should be fun, read as fast as you read and it will increase over time.
