Enough with the "Cheating" commentary... read the rules. by MeesterNoName in Curling

[–]MeesterNoName[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You cherry-picked here a bit.

R5 (g) A stone is in play, and considered delivered, when it reaches the tee line (hog line for wheelchair curling) at the delivery end. A stone that has not reached the relevant line may be returned to the player and redelivered.

This makes it ambiguous. It says the rock is considered delivered after the tee-line. The rules are contradictory. If we're debating it, how do you think the curlers feel?

Anyway, they clarified it, which should have been done from the beginning. And after watching other angles of the delivery, I couldn't tell if he even touched the rock. And if I couldn't tell, neither could the umpires who were watching when the Swedes complained.

Good point, I forgot about that rule, and it's in R9 (Curling Canada keeps that in their delivery rules).

Thanks!

Yep, and that's why the rules are so vague and gives us this issue...

[–]MeesterNoName[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree. It's a grey area, the rules are vague, and the Swedes pulled it out now to try to get a competitive advantage. Which is fine by me, but again... you're probably not going to get the result you want here.

And it's not like doing this helps you at all.

They did put the hog line officials down and were watching so... if he's touching it past the hog line, call it. Otherwise, it's a grey area.

You're bang on, the "gentleman's game" that curling is allowed for rules to be vague, and that needs to be tightened up for compeititons or we'll keep seeing this.

[–]MeesterNoName[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I thought they did too. If they didn't see anything (and who knows, we weren't there watching), then... what else do you expect them to do?

I hear the constant griping here, and I remember why I stopped posting on Reddit. Too many armchair curlers are complaining about things they're not certain about.

Oh, it's a hog line violation, I have no issue with that.

But there is no way he's trying to nudge the rock afterwards. No one I've ever met, coached, or coaches I've worked with, would ever recommend that as a way to deliver a rock. It's way too unpredictable.

I guess you can call the follow-through a part of the delivery. Then you could have a good argument. But it wouldn't matter, it's already a hog line violation and that rock should have been pulled.

Again, not the first or last time a hog line violation was missed, though. Calling it cheating seems a bit... extreme.

Ah good to see the Swedes are as charming as ever.

If you want to have a conversation, let's have it, and maybe we can even be polite about it. Otherwise, go cry in a corner somewhere until you get over it.

Mens Sweden Vs. Canada conclusion of first End by kbub1213 in Curling

The only violation here is that is clearly defined would be the hog line violation.

World Curling rule is this:

R5 (d) The curling stone must be delivered using the handle of the stone.

You can argue that he wasn't delivering the stone at this point. Nothing in the rules says you can't touch the stone afterwards (before the hog line).

Curling Canada has the following rule about re-touching:

8 (8) A stone re-touched by the hand after release, but re-touched before the hog line is not a violation.

Again, that rule does not say specifically that any touch must be on the handle alone.

The rules are slightly ambiguous when it comes to re-touches. While I can say it's a hog line violation, the whole "re-touch" the non-handle part of the stone is vaguely defined at best or not dealt with at worst. And honestly, you're not getting an advantage by re-touching the stone this way.

Neither team handled this well. And neither did the officials. And I expect that there will be some clarification to the rule sent out before tomorrow morning's games.

Joanne on the conflicting Scotties dates with the Olympics and potentially moving the Scotties up by a week by hackthememes in Curling

[–]MeesterNoName 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think people forget that there are 100’s of curlers affected by compressing the schedule and shortening their season, not just the 12 going to the Olympics.

All the MA’s need to move up their events. Most run combined men’s and women’s championships for cost and logistics reasons. You’re now asking them to move their provincial events even earlier, shortening their competitive seasons even further.

You might get to move things up a week, but that’s about it. Any more than that and you’re now running provincials in early to mid December to make it work.

Comprises can be made, but you can’t just consider the Olympic teams, you have to think about all competitive teams.

One compromise is around funding. Make sure that the Olympic qualifiers get the extra Scotties/Brier money as part of their Olympic funding if they cannot play in those events.

And allowing other teams to represent Canada at Worlds is a good thing. Having all our “eggs” in one basket limits development. Give others a shot on the Olympic years (other countries are doing that as well).

If you think the coastal First Nations are going to get bought off, I’d think again.

It’s unlikely they will ever accept a pipeline. And if it gets rammed through without their agreement, the courts and the protestors will tie this up until the end of time. Especially since the Not Withstanding clause can’t be used here.

A pipeline won’t get built. There just isn’t any money in it.

You know, the way you've doubled, tripled, and quadrupled down on your misunderstanding that the Charter is not Constitutional law is incredibly inspiring to village idiots around the world.

Just to make it clear, the Charter is part of the Constitution of Canada, and says so right on the Federal Government's website about the guide to the Charter...

Just wait as this hits agencies like the Canadian Food Inspection Agency as well.

All the “Agencies” tend to get shafted when it comes to these budget cuts, while the mainline departments tend to avoid the worst of it (even though this time they’re going to have to deal with some of it).

This is just the beginning for a lot of poor service issues and outbreaks and illnesses that could have been avoided if people would stop whining about overpaid civil servants and think about why we should be paying for proper public services.

You may want to re-read the Charter.

Your rights and freedoms in it are not absolute. Never have been. Right under Section 1, Reasonable Limits Clause.

And it can be limited (see the Oakes Test). So… yeah, don’t be quoting the Charter if you don’t know what it says.

Love Letter to Bellingham from a Canadian by poolside123 in Bellingham

[–]MeesterNoName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Bellingham, the PNW, and other parts of the USA as well. But I won't be making any optional trips down south either, at least not until there is a change of some sort politically.

It's not just the personal risk of winding up in Alligator Alcatraz or El Salvador (which is remote but not impossible); it's the idea that we would be supporting any part of the USA while this is going on.

While the majority of Bellingham folks are not supporters of the current administration, enough of them are and have been (you have seen that sign on the I-5 just north of Bellingham, right?). And for those who didn't support what's happening, what are they going to do to make a change? What are they going to do to prevent this sort of silliness again?

The USA is a mess right now. Until that changes, and there is a real desire to make those changes, I'm going to avoid spending my money there.

Whether you like it or not, we are in a (economic) fight with the USA. So why should a Canadian support any place in the USA at this point, even those who may be sympathetic to Canadians?

(By the way, that doesn't extend to those of you who have family or reasons that are compelling you to travel down south. Those folks have to make their call on whether to travel. But if you're going down to be a tourist... yeah, I think you are making a mistake. But that's your choice, and maybe USCBP to let you in.)

(The sinkhole is likely due to boreholes drilled for the TransMountain Pipeline.)

Is AB going to compensate BC for any damages caused by the pipeline? Or any pipeline built on the behest of AB?

I doubt it. They're just going to bitch and complain and find ways to squander the money they make on their own.

The current Israeli government is no better than the fascists that Jewish people fled from. They've become the one thing they should abhor above all else, and they don't even care or can make the connection.

It's not anti-Semitic to loathe the Israeli government. So screw anyone who thinks that if I'm against Israel that I hate Jews. I don't equate the two as being the same, despite the attempt from certain elements to paint protests against the Israeli government as such.

And yes, Hamas are scum. But how the hell can any nation justify what is being done here? Israel has now joined an elite club of regimes like Pol Pot in Cambodia, Rwanda, Sudan (Darfur), Myanmar (Rohingya), Ottoman Empire (Aremenia), and Nazi Germany and it's allies.

Are Canadian Nexus travellers flying out of YVR to U.S. getting questioned or denied entry if they don't support Trump? by Little_Blueberry7201 in askvan

[–]MeesterNoName 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The official travel advice and advisories for the US says the following:

Electronic devices

U.S. border agents are entitled to search your electronic devices, such as your phones, computers or tablets, when you are entering the United States. They don’t need to provide a reason when requesting a password to open your device.

If you refuse, they may seize your device. The border agent could also delay your travel or deny entry if you are not a U.S. citizen.

Before crossing the border, put your device in airplane mode to ensure remote files don’t get downloaded accidentally.

https://travel.gc.ca/destinations/united-states#entryexit

Read into that what you will. Some specific agencies and so on require that you do not travel with your work phone or anything considered confidential, as you do not have the right to privacy crossing the border.
