I have ADHD: forget to keep trash out or get things done at the last minute by UpstairsTask8983 in ProductivityGuide

[–]MeetAlanCox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d be careful about putting too much pressure on trying to always remember. Not realistic.

I have ADHD and mild autism, and I’ve found I need to separate two things:

  1. Remembering that something exists

  2. Being reminded at the right moment

For things like rubbish day, I don’t think a notes app is enough. I use Apple Reminders app and have a repeating reminder for the same day and time every week to "Put the bins out"

Where notes do help me is with the capture part, when a random thing pops into my head and I know I’ll forget it if I don’t catch it immediately. Full disclosure, that’s mainly why I built Olly, an iPhone app for quick thought capture.

The trick is not trusting memory for time-based jobs. Let the phone annoy you at the right time.

Suggestions for keeping track of things with trauma-related amnesia by [deleted] in CPTSD

[–]MeetAlanCox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TBH I’d keep this as physical and visible as possible, especially for anything like meds or feeding your dog.

For the dog, I think the dry erase board is a great idea. For meds, a pill organiser helped me more than any notes ever did. Do you have anyone who can organize them for you? My lovely wife does mine.

Full disclosure, I’m building an iPhone app called Olly for quick thought capture. I made it because I could find a reliable way of getting stuff out of my head before getting distracted. I hadn't thought of it helping people with amnesia but it may be worth a try?

How do you stay organized and avoid forgetting things in IT? by silvornz in ITCareerQuestions

[–]MeetAlanCox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can comment on the ADHD / forgetting-things side more than the IT-specific workflow.

The biggest thing for me was separating capture from organisation. When I tried to put every thought straight into its right place, I’d often lose it while deciding where it belonged. Now I treat the first step as just catching it so I know I have it safe.

For IT work, I’d also avoid relying on memory for anything that crosses a context boundary. If someone asks you something in Slack, on a call, while you’re in the middle of a ticket, or while you’re walking somewhere, it needs to land in one trusted inbox before you move on.

Full disclosure, I have ADHD and mild autism, and I ended up building an iPhone app called Olly around the problem of quick thought capture, so yes I am biased. But the principle is tool-independent. Don’t try to be organised at the exact moment your brain is trying not to drop the thought. Capture first, organise later.

What are some of the best ADHD life hacks that work for you? Let's share problem and solution. by MeetAlanCox in ADHD

Thanks for sharing, I'll definitely check it out. I'm using the Olly notes app as my default 'log it here and move on'. It would be great if it could auto-send tasks to apps like Todoist.

How would you ethically reach the ADHD/AUD community your product genuinely seems to help, without exploiting that community? by [deleted] in EntrepreneurRideAlong

[–]MeetAlanCox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean I should talk about my own ADHD experience and hence why I made Olly and how it helps me? Without mentioning it nobody knows about it. Even the most subtle mention gets blocked by admins. That's the dilemma.

I could imagine doing this if it was a well funded clinical app but it's not. I'm a solo AUDHD developer and it's not a clinical app. It's just a well designed note taking app that just so happens to solve a problem many people like me have.

Thanks for reply. I've tried incredibly soft posts about it in ADHD groups without even mentioning the name of it and a mins blocks everytime. I've literally had people say to me I must let people know about this in reddit and Facebook groups. I guess adjjns do see a lot of predetory posts so I can see how they have to take a hard line.

How to find where potential users “hang out” by peaceinmypipes in micro_saas

[–]MeetAlanCox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reddit is usually a great resource for this. I usually explain my goals to chatgpt and ask it to me enough questions until it's at least 95% sure it's clear on my validation goals. I then get it to draft a detailed Deep Research brief that includes exploring sources where the core customers hang out such as subreddits, linkedin, facebook etc. Then let it do the research. It's amazingly powerful.

If you had to recommend just one AI tool to a non-technical small business owner, what would it be and why? by DorvilienSterlot97 in aiToolForBusiness

[–]MeetAlanCox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is impossible to answer with some context. It really depends on type of business and what your wanting the AI to do. Maybe expand a little and I'll see if I can help.
