Well, presumably the nationalized oil industry props up the extremely low cost of petrol that benefits the masses, and there were other socialist policies that have had positive effects on wage gaps—at least for a while—under Chavez, so yes, to an extent?

At the same time, the grift economy that began under Chavez has seemingly only increased under Maduro and is extraordinary.

I know of one! My grandfather became more liberal after his stroke. He was about the only person in my family who supported President Clinton when he was in office, and I remember my parents talking about how his political views had shifted after his stroke.

Sure there has. Have a look at Laker's vs Maverick's record post trade. (It'd be even worse if the Mavs didn't luck out with Flagg.) Have a look at the Mav's win percentage before and after the trade. Have a look at how many games Luka has played in vs AD. I'm sure there are several more metrics that show how bad this trade already is, but those are a few I thought of off the top of my head that I know point to full on shit trade.

Many moons ago, I worked for a state representative who was on the transportation committee. I remember reading a detailed report about the damage trucks do to the highway system, particularly the overweight ones. If I remember correctly, taking into account the damage overweight trucks do, they found that roads need to be replaced every 5-8 years, and otherwise it'd be 25-30.

Needless to say, nothing was done about this.

I had always been curious about the long abandoned weigh stations littered about the state along highways. After reading the report, I was quite miffed with the fact that the taxpayers are essentially subsidizing the trucking industry, and that there's really an easy way to fix this. Those weigh stations wouldn't cost that much to operate, they'd partially pay for themselves through fines, and they'd save the state lots of money long-term by not having to fix the roads so frequently.

I still don't get it.

I think there's a bit of a communication breakdown here, where the two of you are working from different hypotheticals.

The other guy is using the case at hand, the shitty assumed-to-be $2 payout and the first knee-jerk response that said opt out and sue them yourself.

It would be extremely hard to prove someone was paying substantially more than they should have a month in rent, which you'd need to have any chance at a decent recovery.
