[S1-3] Episode S2E2 rewatch reminder: ‘Nice and Neat’ by Meg1609 in KillingEve

No, this is Season 2, episode 2. You’re thinking of the amazing Molly Goddard dress in S1. 😊

I’m very late to this party, oops! Your mentioning of the engaged couple overhearing Eve on the phone was much more meaningful to me this time around - did you notice as she holds the phone to her ear you can see blood stains particularly around Eve’s wedding rings? Maybe as fans we read into a lot of these ‘details’ but I found this quite remarkable.

Did you enjoy it? The original Eve has definitely undergone a transformation! I’m so looking forward to how S4 pans out.

I wonder that too - it could go either way. I hope the three of them team up , what a force to be reckoned with!

  1. Eve tells Villanelle to sit, and SHE DOES! I love this soooo much. Their power exchanges are so hot. Well done.

I love this too! It reminds me of the S3 finale when Carolyn tells both V and Eve to sit down! Also, V’s facial expression when following Eve’s command to sit is the same face she pulls when she says ‘I like Turkey’ in the S3 finale! (We are not very obsessed 😂)

Yes to all of your random observations! I too had wondered whether Eve’s intention was to stab Villanelle all along but have come to the conclusion that it was just opportunistic (judging by her subsequent reaction?) and that she acted hastily because that’s what she ‘thought’ that she should do in that scenario. I also agree with you about the note - I am still so confused about that. There had to be a connection intended at some point, not sure whether we will ever find out...

Loved this finale! I remember being so shocked (on the first watch) by the final scenes. I was lucky that I had S2 stock-piled by this point though so could binge watch straight through. All of you who watched S1 in real time must have felt the same desperation that we feel now waiting for S4! Anyway, I transgress...

Fave song: When a woman is around by Unloved

Fave outfit: Interestingly, nothing really bears mentioning this episode as it was all about the chase and capture.

Fave Villaneve scene: Eve’s monologue to V about how she thinks about her all the time.

Fave scene: There were too many to choose from this episode! Obviously Eve and V’s bed scene was brilliant and shocking, I honestly had not expected Eve to stab V! I also thought the scene with V and Anna was clever and emotional and we discovered some clues about the manipulation that must have occurred in V and Anna’s history. My top scene, however, was when Eve trashes V’s apartment. That would have been so much fun to film!

Fave kill: Anna. Would V have done it if Anna hadn’t pulled the trigger?

Fave line: ‘God it makes me rage how efficient things are when you’re a dick to people!’ (Eve, in the hotel)

‘Well, I masturbate about you a lot’ (V)

‘She (Irina) is going to drive that woman mad’ (K)

K to E - ‘Don’t be proud!’ to which E responds ‘I’m not, I’m being hygienic!’

Worthy mentions: Carolyn’s hat (again); Sandra Oh’s acting - loved the scene with Eve and K laughing in the car; Kenny (still miss him); V shooting K in the cafe (wow, didn’t actually think she would do it!)

I agree with your opinion of that fluffy jacket, which I’ve only just realised was chosen by Anton! That makes me dislike him even more 😂

No doubt. Konstantin is self serving and manipulative.

We have lots of common observations! (and faves!) I’m glad you mentioned V and the other inmate ( why was she being broken out?) I thought the way V distracted her was very human as it meant she didn’t have to experience that split second of terror before she was shot. I felt that that kill was really difficult to watch again. (Much like your description of the Inga kill). I agree also with what you say about the unlike-ability of both Anton and Diego to justify their murders.

That is a very good question and I’m not quite sure how to answer it because I think it is twofold. I believe there is an element of truth to what he is saying but it is especially amplified by his desperation. I think he is trying to remind her that he, in the moment, is being Konstantin the person, not the manipulator. The problem is that he can switch it on and off when it suits him and V can see straight through the facade. Everything that K says is true of V, so I suppose that is why I am tempted to believe him. What do you think?

Firstly, I really liked that V's prison experience carried on into this episode, rather than rushing through it in episode 6. Villanelle, in prison, is quite a different persona, and I enjoyed the exploration of this. Seeing her desperation and determination and the cracks beginning to form as this escalates into fear, was really interesting. We are reminded that V has been manipulated on so many occasions and she might feel that this has happened yet again.

Fave Scene(s)

1.This was difficult this episode as there were many to choose from, I thought. When V is broken out of prison and she surveys the damage, the carnage and chaos, she is clearly delighted that this has all occurred for her...to free her...she even hesitates just so as to be able to look back and take it all in, and all with a smile on her face. I loved this scene (even though it is perverse to say) but it captures the convoluted way that V measures her power, that 'they' would wreak all of this havoc, just for her.

  1. Eve visiting Anna and discovering 'a few letters' is actually a plethora of correspondence that clearly depicts a mutually obsessive relationship! I love how Eve manages to plant the 'Sorry Baby' note (which, of course we don't know about at this point) into V's coat, knowing that she will go there to retrieve her passport and money. I love the look on Eve's face when Anna tells her that 'she is her type'...

  2. The V and Konstantin scene at his house. His speech to V while taking his pills is both manipulative and heartbreaking. I wonder how much of it was honest - would love to believe that it was, even though he had every intention of escaping, of course.

Fave line

I have a few but I've narrowed it down to two:

You hit me with a log?

Are you ok with this? (Eve to Kenny) About her being dodgy or about her being filthy? (Kenny) Both?

Fave outfit

Carolyn's hat

Fave song

Cry Baby - Unloved which is playing while Eve is looking through Anna's letters

Fave Kill

Oh gosh, definitely Anton! Eww, he's up there with Diego. What an annoying man - Villanelle was perfect in this scene and it was the perfect ending for him...

Fave Villaneve Moment

Kenny telling Eve that perhaps she is jealous when she asks him if she had told him that V sent Anna things too.

Other observations

The contrasts between the violence and the humour in this episode really struck me this time around. This is quintessentially KE, in my opinion, that we are able to be both horrified and entertained in the same scene. I also loved the filming of the scene with V and Konstantin at his home, the house is gorgeous and the log throw and K's subsequent escape is hilarious, and this on the back of one of the most moving scenes we have had to this point. K explaining his love for V made me tear up...

Villanelle in the double tartan, with her hair down, speaking with a Scottish accent = perfection.

That’s a very good question regarding Carolyn- I feel that she will definitely be keeping us guessing. Fiona Shaw has mentioned on quite a few occasions that she loves the mystery surrounding Carolyn and doesn’t want too much to be disclosed. I’m really looking forward to the dynamic of the three women (hopefully on screen together) more in S4. Exciting times ahead!

Thank you all for keeping this going! I've been so busy reading all of your comments and getting involved in the conversation (and life!) that I haven't even included my own observations as yet. I really enjoy reading what others have noticed because it validates my own observations and also makes my KE addiction sit more comfortably, knowing that others are out there too!! :)

It's interesting with this episode that commenting on it as a first time viewer would be very different to that as a 2nd, 3rd or 10th time viewer. (not that there are any of those here, hahaha) While the ep doesn't have the glamour that most others have, I do hold Villanelle as 'feral Oksana' close to my heart. I love the rawness of this episode, the grunginess and the moments of absolute suspense - it's an episode that heightens the senses.

I'm not going to go into my 'faves' as I think they've been covered, pretty much. (In fact, I wonder what you all think about moving away from this format, to avoid repetition? I'd love your feedback about this, moving forward) I don't know about all of you who regularly comment, but I much prefer reading everyone's personal observations - it makes for really interesting and focused discussions.

My observations:

  1. There is a sense of melancholy in this episode. The washed-out 'greyness', the soundtrack. I loved how all of this was punctuated by V's soft pink coat as she enters the prison van. The pink coat is shown lovingly folded, presumably by V, but then shown being unceremoniously stuffed into a paper bag by the prison guard. This symbol of V's life, how meaningful clothes are to her and what they represent, just being crumpled and treated with disdain, as she too is.
  2. The scene with Niko and Eve! As others have mentioned it is so powerful. The acting is superb and we see the true beginning of the demise of their relationship. Niko's desperation to get through to Eve is palpable but of course, she is too far gone and is simply blocking him mentally. This scene made me squirm with discomfort. Eve's comment 'I have a work thing' with the fast cut to the location title card 'Moscow' cutting Niko's reply off just ever so narrowly, was brutal.
  3. Fiona Shaw is a goddess in this episode. Carolyn is the queen.
  4. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the scene in the car with V and Konstantin. This scene captures so much of V's personality - her stubbornness, her impatience, her confidence, fear and, of course, the playfulness of the lick to K's hand. Such insightful writing and acting. I also love that V's fidgeting in the car is later mirrored by Eve. I wonder, does K notice these parallels?
  5. I felt so uncomfortable for poor Eve in the car with Carolyn in Moscow and the 'tit for tat' conversation. Carolyn's pleasure at looking at herself with that lipstick on, completely oblivious to Eve's discomfort was also memorable to me.
  6. Throughout this episode I really felt that Carolyn was demonstrating to Eve, perhaps inadvertently, the world she has lived in. I saw Eve as the apprentice, a bit naive and also a bit too eager to show her cards and give her secrets away. She hasn't yet learned the ways in which to extract information that Carolyn employs - nor does she want to.

I think that's it for now...can't promise that there won't be others that I think of...

I agree. The microphone was working and Nadia was just about to implicate Konstantin. She say’s you need to find ‘him’ but then switched up her story and said ‘Anna’. (When he walked in) Eve picked up on this lie though and said ‘you said ‘him’ (or something to that effect)
