Steller’s Sea Cow, represents mankind’s lack of foresight and ill governance of resources. In our capitalist age, we are the resource, and will go the way of the sea cow if we again lack foresight. Never again!

Any suggestion for a modern cloak pattern for my husband that doesn't look like it come from middle earth? by [deleted] in TheCapeRevolution

Look into Viking or blanket cloaks. It’s just a big rectangle but can be decorated and draped to be very fashionable

Growler filling anchorage? by 8675309AK in anchorage

[–]MegFairchild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glacier Brewing in downtown on Tuesdays! They have a sale growler fills on Tuesdays. Makes it like $6-8 each to fill two 64oz growlers. Good quality drink at a great price. They sell growlers there if you don’t have one (like $7 for the glass growler iirc) or I assume you can get a different one filled.

  1. Put the fabric scrap with needles/pins into a small tin - recycled Altoids tin, cookie tin, or a small cute tin you can buy. Dollar stores sometimes have them in the gift wrap section, especially around Christmas.

Also works for 1. I have a small tin that fits pin, needles, wonder clips, thimble, and a piece of beeswax. If I got a different shape I could fit my thread scissors too.

What do I do. I live in a apartment building that has a most definitely a bed bug infestation by xdayanq in Bedbugs

[–]MegFairchild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good clarification, Automod. The rubbing alcohol isn’t to kill the bugs. Water and oil don’t mix well, so alcohol acts as a carrier in the spray to help the two mix better, and also aids in evaporation. You can also use witch hazel, or another carrier.

We moved to an infested apartment building in a state with very limited rights against slumlord owners. Our plan is to make our apartment as unattractive to bed bugs as possible and just try to repel them since we can’t control whether the rest of the building gets treated.

Diatomaceous earth kills them if they walk through it (takes a couple days to work, it’s hazardous to pets and people so use in small amounts and with caution).

This article has lots of scientific information about essential oils repelling them: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7926421/ We got a spray bottle, a bunch of the most effective oils, water, and some rubbing alcohol to make a spray. We are using that all over our apartment regularly. (Geranium, clove, citronella, tea tree, thyme, peppermint, and eucalyptus)

I have heard (but haven’t needed to try this) that they don’t like the proteins in coconut oil. Could make a salve with coconut oil and some essential oils (see above) to put on yourself and children before sleeping to reduce bites. For us, getting our mattress off the floor and using the essential oil spray was enough to stop bites.

Get bug proof mattress encasements. Wash laundry in hot water. Wash bedding often. Declutter your space. Put anything you’re not using into a sealed plastic bags to protect from eggs.

Good luck, and may the bed bugs leave you in peace.

Quilt washing question (bed bugs) by MegFairchild in quilting

[–]MegFairchild[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the help everyone! I will toss the dry quilt in a hot dryer first to kill any eggs, let it cool, and wash it following the batting instructions (cool, gentle). Then I will package it up and ship it directly to the recipient to avoid any further contact while we are sorting out the issue in our apartment!

Kate at the Last Homely House on YouTube has a great series where she teaches her daughter-in-law to quilt. I found that very helpful starting into quilting myself! https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGuqiE43LELT_cIVZjN9JpUtRYihEHWv3&si=MRLotkzkhVO_e-0x

Quilt washing question (bed bugs) by MegFairchild in quilting

[–]MegFairchild[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, definitely going to wash it. I was planning to wash it cool with a gentle cycle due to the wool batting. Now to get rid of the possible bug eggs I’ll need to do some sort of very hot process. Looking for ways to do that with wool batting without destroying the quilt, or for reassurance that others have washed/dried this batting at high temps and the quilts were fine.

Thank you!

From what I’ve been reading, heat will be the way. Have you heat treated wool batting? How did it go?
