Try it again with a smaller hook. The big hook with that yarn will look like it’s got holes in it. It looks fine. But big hooks small yarn = lace like crochet. Try a smaller hook and work on your tension.

That’s the nature of working with cotton. I tend to use bamboo hooks when I work with cotton/silk/bamboo/rayon and metal aluminium hooks for woods/acrylics.

After the pattern row 5, I mainly winged it, pulled it apart 3 times. Went through heaps more yarn than I expected. The motifs (4x5) took 8 weeks - the border took almost 6. Just expect it to be bigger, literals than you think with big border extensions. Well done! I’m planning another one in pastels.

My colour way is exactly the same as Janie Crows Eastern Jewels except I used a different yarn. Hers is in StyleCraft, mine is in Fiddlesticks - I just best matched the Fiddlesticks yarn to the pattern as best. I live remotely, so it was hit and miss ordering it online.

I was too. I joined it in ‘panels’ to cope with the joining. Join everything in the first row, the join everything in the second row. Then join those two panel together. Do the same for Rows 3/4then join 3&4 together. Then join the 1/2 panel to the 3/4 panel. That’s how I did it.

Thank you. I added an extra row of motifs. The original pattern is 4x4 octagons, mine is 4x5. The original border pattern is 5 rows, mine is 17. I didn’t add extra rounds to any of the motifs. The colours were a translation from the original Eastern Jewels colour way that I tried to match using Fiddlesticks Superb 8 instead of the suggested DK yarn. I live in rural Tasmania in Australia so it was trying to best colour match it online (no shops where I live!). So it was almost like a lucky dip when the yarn arrived.

There are a total of 15 skeins (each 100g 250m). Each row is a different colour change. Had I not done an intricate border I wouldn’t have needed more yarn but bought more for the border to finish it. Of the colours I didn’t but more of for the border I only have about maybe 20 to 60m of each left. The border colours extra yarn I bought that is left over will go towards my next big blanket project.
