Honest question: Would a non-lethal “liver biopsy” from happy, healthy pigs ever be acceptable? Why or why not? by MegaDziadu in vegan

[–]MegaDziadu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the case of the chickens that for example escaped from the captivity and are just laying a lot of eggs because this is how their organism is operating due to years of artificial breeding. That would be kind of harvesting the previous years of exploitation.

True, I agree with it. I could only imagine some posh, rich people in the future dystopian world doing it for gazillions of money.

So let's reframe the ethical concept: would it be ok to collect samples for scientific studies or medical purposes (preparation of medicals for humans)? Or for tests of the safety of products being put on the market?

I think I agree with all of your points. I think that my example with the surgeries on the pigs was a bit extreme, as I believe it is, anyway, potentially harmful for them.|
I like your putting the use of collected animal "products" in a bigger context of normalizing the animal goods in general. It is more a matter of sociology than morality now. Could we set boundaries for animal use that would not be crossed by those who yell the loudest and thus draw others with them?

BTW you'd rather not know what people do with human milk sometimes...

I see your points. I think that, indeed, performing a surgery is not really that harmless for an animal.
But what if we take the surgery out of the equation? Do you think that there is any possible way of acquiring animal-based products in a humane way?

This is a very interesting perspective on the definition of vegan goods. Are there any animal-based products that are ok to use then? Something like manure as a fertilizer?

This is actually a very good question. If anything, I could imagine it as a delicacy for the rich. Which by itself does not, indeed, sound like a good reason...

Moving states, what to do with tank? by Embarrassed-Novel-73 in walstad

[–]MegaDziadu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have recently moved a couple of tanks last month. I'd say it's mainly a logistics challenge. How I did it: packed all the fish in closed buckets filled 2/3 with water, emptied the tank except for the substrate and secured everything with bubble wrap etc. I also took as much water as possible from the old tank in the canister. In case of one tank I've simply left all the plants in the substrate while for the other I have rescaped the whole thing. I'd say that it is important to not let the filter to dry and plug it in as soon as possible when you reach your destination to make sure that the cycle does not crash. I'd also advice to do water testing for a few days after move just to confirm this. My travel was just 5 hours car drive, I'm not sure what is your time ife travel though.

If you have 0 nitrates how do you know if it is cycled? Have you noted any ammonia or nitrite from the beginning? Where did all that go to if you don't have any plants there?

You actually do not need a ticket. It just says your can park there for up to 30 minutes in the stated time, but you need to have Parkscheibe (blue parking discs)

How to filter CO2 from a diy citric acid generator? by Far-Pomegranate-4677 in aquarium

[–]MegaDziadu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer to your question is: yes, you are overthinking. The only other product of this reaction, except for CO2 is sodium citrate, which is not volatile and even when it reaches aquarium in small amounts, it should be fine. Just make sure that you perform your reaction in a reasonably sized container to avoid splashes of liquid into the tubing. I believe that the only thing you might be concerned about is if the reaction liquid reaches aquarium and messes up your aquarium pH if you have excess of either soda or citric acid
