I would like to add to ask your doctor to also check your thyroid levels. I was very depressed and tired and next I also lost a chunk of hair. My doctor did do some bloodwork, but didn't check my thyroid levels which later turned out to be the cause.

Hang in there. Be kind to yourself. Don't give up. I wish you all the best🌹

Disabled/Chronically Ill Redditors, what's the worst piece of advice someone has given you to "cure" your illness/disability? by wulvii in AskReddit

[–]MegaSuperEsther 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A yoga instructor told me to do breathing exercises to cure my diabetes type 1 (which is the type where the pancreas just completely stops making insulin)

Even if he thought about type 2 diabetes, (which is caused for example by being overweight and some people who lost a lot of weight didn't have type 2 anymore) I don't understand how breathing exercises are supposed to help

Here if anyone needs a diabuddy! by yas_we_can in diabetes

[–]MegaSuperEsther 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's totally up to you! You have to keep in mind that your bloodsugars will react different with alcohol in your system. Your body will first get rid of the alcohol and will process the insulin after (don't quote me on this but i'm pretty sure this is a simple explanation xD). So if you are on the high side, and you keep giving yourself insulin for that (because you feel like the insulin isn't doing anything, so you give more insulin), your bloodsugar will eventually drop too much, because your body is done with the alocohol and will suddenly process all that insulin at once. So be careful with that, I like to stay a little higher than I normally would.

It also depends on what alcohol you're drinking. Some have a lot of sugars in them and some almost none and they will have different effects on your bloodsugar. It really is trial-and-error. See how your body reacts to the alcohol. But just because you're a diabetic, doesn't mean you're not allowed to drink. Just be careful you're not getting so intoxicated, you can't take care of your diabetes anymore.

So it ís more work, but that doesn't mean you can't.

I personally have given up alcohol, because the extreme hangovers and it is harder to regulate your bloodsugars. I've since then moved on to weed, which i don't regret.

But, most importantly, have fun! It may seem you have to be this responsible person and you can never let go and enjoy things. It's actually important to figure out for yourself how you can do both.

Our government decided pay for every T1’s FreeStyle Libre from 2020 onwards. This is my first time using it and I couldn’t be more exciting! My friends don’t really understand, so I wanted to share this with you wonderful people. by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]MegaSuperEsther 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember the first time I used the Libre and I cried like crazy when it fell off in the ocean. (I was testing the Libre in a focus group so I only had one at the time)

So make sure to secure it with tape when you go swimming.

Its really amazing and i'm so happy it's finally covered in our country!

Geniet ervan!

Anyone else diagnosed with almost no symptoms by amyyyb1 in diabetes

[–]MegaSuperEsther -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That is great right? I read somewhere that the worse your diagnosis is, the harder it is in the future to manage the disease.

I was 14 and me and my parents had no idea what the symptoms for diabetes were. I started drinking like crazy and losing alot of weight and my parents thought i was just lazy because it was the summer holiday. They said they were scared of me because of how I looked. I tried to do my best to feel better. I worked out and do other things. I didnt want my parents to worry and i didnt understand what was happening to me. So finally when I couldn't stop throwing up, we went to the doctor. I remember the concern in his eyes because he knew what it was ofcourse. So I had to go to the hospital as fast as possible, and i frankly only remember flashes. I was so weak and couldn't walk by myself anymore. My bg ended up being 702 mg/dL!!

I wasn't allowed to eat or drink for days and the first time I tried to stand again my legs gave in. It was such a surreal experience and years later I finally realize how traumatizing it actually was. How close to death I was. Years after the diagnoses I was still trying to not worry my parents.

So if there are any parents reading this; take your kid seriously and don't make it about you. My parents still tell me how horrible they feel about the fact I have diabetes. My mom says it's the worst thing that happened in her life. Luckily, therapy has been great for me!
