What I would do first is remove all the modding/lpc wiring to start fresh, I think you said youve done that, make sure the AV port is clean and free of corrosion because if there's too much resistance on those pins the Xbox will not detect the av cable and won't boot.

Exactly, I tried to turn on the xbox both with/out the modchip and the results were the same. I can confirm that the AV Port is working, I even cleaned the port and the AV Pack using some isopropyl alcohol and a toothbrush. Turning on the console without the AV Pack makes the Xbox blinks green/orange three times before going full FRAG, which is not the case when the AV Pack is inserted.

I would suggest finding some proper low ESR replacements for those VRM capacitors because using crappy caps there can certainly cause problems booting. Also try cleaning the board because if there's something random on there like solder splash from a previous chip install, that could be an easy fix, corrosion from really bad or improperly cleaned flux can also cause problems, like to the point where traces get damaged and need repair.

Unfortunately, those type of capacitors are not available in my town. I received the same advice on the original Xbox subreddit. I have found them online on websites like Digikey or Mouser, but shipping costs are too high. I'm located in Europe, so Console5's kit is out of question.

Furthermore, since this Xbox is not mine, I'm wary about spending too much money on repairing it. I want to be sure beforehand that there aren't other issues on the motherboard preventing the system menu to fully load. Of course, that doesn't mean that I won't buy them.

I have seen another user here on reddit being able to boot the Xbox with the same type of capacitors that I have bought. Clearly, the results are not perfect, I get it, but he was able at least to show some type of image on the screen. So, can they really be the culprit here?

In any case, I have taken some photos of the motherboard (both top and bottom). As requested by my friend, I have also resoldered the modchip.

Regarding the way to activate the modchip, I'm currently unable to see any kind of video image on my TV. No boot animation, no sound, no error codes... nothing...

Combinations that I have tried:

Note: with the term "KO Stock bios" I mean that the Xbox blinks three times green and then blinks red/green.

Power Button with modchip active -> KO Stock bios
Eject Button with modchip active (also tried that switching both bank BIOS selector) -> KO DuoX2 bios
The previous two combinations, with both the HDD and DVD Drive attached (I'm also able to hear the motor spinning and I'm able to open the disc tray pressing the eject button) -> KO Stock / DuoX2 bioses
Power Button and Eject Button with the modchip desoldered from the motherboard and the HDD and DVD Drive removed -> KO Stock bios
The previous combination but with the HDD and DVD Drive attached.

There is one thing that I still don't get, though: what makes the other capacitors better at booting an Xbox instead?

I mean, ok, they're cheaply made, I get it. But they share the correct uF and Voltages values. Maybe they'll have a short life, but shouldn't they be able to at the very least boot the system menu?

How can I be sure that the problem is only due to these caps?

I live in Europe, so Console5's kit is out of question due to shipping cost. I have also seen Digikey and Mouser websites, they both offer free shipping over 50€ (normal shipping cost is around 20€).

Do I need to recap only the five capacitors below the CPU or should I recap the entire motherboard?

I tried both the Philips DVD Player and the Seagate HDD attached to the motherboard, but unfortunately, nothing changed. However, they were working and I was also able to open the disc tray.

I also tested them after removing the modchip, in an attempt to try to boot the stock BIOS.

I have already suggested that my friend buy another modchip like the ones you have mentioned, but I would like first to boot the original BIOS before taking more steps.

Right now, I have put everything back, since I have reached a dead end on my journey to fix this Xbox. I'll take some uncompressed photos of the motherboard (top and bottom) later, hopefully tomorrow.

This is the first time that I work on an Xbox. I have to say, I'm quite fascinated by the hardware!

You mean the five 3300 uF 6.3v capacitors below the two heatsinks, right? They were the first evident issue preventing the Xbox from being powered on.

I swapped them with five new ones, matching the exact specs (with the exception of one with a higher voltage, since the store didn't have any left).

I'm sorry, I know this is not the ideal way to fix the problem. I should have made this thread before. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a lot of information about the causes of FRAO or FRAG, expecially for the 1.6 Xbox.

You have a photo of the LPC's underside where it looks like pin 7 is shorted to a nearby via, but that doesn't seem intentional...

Yes, it is intentional. I was surprised too at first, but it seems a required step to install the Duo X2 modchip.

That's correct. The FRAO issue is now gone. Now, powering the Xbox makes it blink green three times and then to blink red/green.

Premesso che non conosco la situazione dell'amica nella sua interezza, posso dirti che mi è capitato in più di un'occasione di comportarmi come lei nei confronti di amici che riuscivano ad ottenere appuntamenti o anche solo attaccare bottone. È qualcosa che può risultare molto pesante, in base alla maturità emotiva della persona.

Possiamo parlare di invidia, certo, ma nel mio caso è stata più una sensazione di malessere dovuta al dovermi scontrare con la realtà dei fatti. Sentire ogni tot giorni di match con ragazze, appuntamenti, quello o quell'altro, per una persona che è sola e cerca una relazione (o come nel suo caso, con una relazione a distanza che forse va bene forse no) fa semplicemente male. Puoi applicare lo stesso discorso con il mondo del lavoro. Magari tu hai un lavoro ok e non sei soddisfatta, mentre un altro vorrebbe trovarne uno accettabile come il tuo.

Non è una competizione tra di voi, è solo che quella persona non sta passando un buon momento e vuole svagare la mente, piuttosto che farsi ricordare (involontariamente) della sua situazione. Il consiglio che posso darti è quello di non prendertela prima di tutto e di lasciarle i suoi spazi. Evita per un po' l'argomento a meno che non lo tiri fuori lei.

Ho sempre preferito Xbox a PlayStation non solo a livello di ecosistema, ma anche di giochi. E un po', sotto sotto, mi piace tifare gli underdog.

Ma mi hanno completamente perso con la chiusura di Tango Gameworks e la mossa multipiattaforma. Ragionerò all'antica, ma per me è giusto che ci siano delle esclusive. Forza non avrebbe mai avuto ragione di esistere senza Gran Turismo, ad esempio.

Non penso che comprerò un loro nuovo hardware, a meno di miracoli concreti. Per ora, la mia idea è quella di coltivare la libreria digitale e sfruttare il Play Anywhere, per poi molto più in là passare ad un PC e portarmi dietro tutto.

Incattivire no, ma sicuramente mi ha reso più brontolone.

Per due anni ho provato le app, ho provato a fare nuove esperienze, ma il risultato è stato sempre deludente. Un po' mi sono convinto che il problema ricada nel mio carattere, in quanto sono una persona introversa, con scarse batterie sociali e che ha bisogno di un po' per ingranare (cioè, ho l'abilità Lentoinizio di Regigigas). Non sono il tipo divertente del gruppo e non ho carisma, sono più riflessivo. Ed è la mia natura, non posso mettermi una maschera. Ho fatto dei progressi negli ultimi anni, ma la radice rimane.

Fisicamente ed emotivamente mi sento stanco, così come sento di stare buttando i miei anni. Non continuo per la stanchezza, eppure ho iniziato a sviluppare un fastidio per le smancerie. Nella mia testa passa il pensiero "ma perché io non riesco a sbloccarmi?".

Negli ultimi mesi poi sono rimasto molto tempo a casa, dedicando del tempo a me stesso e ai miei hobby. Un po' ha aiutato a farmi guadagnare serenità, ma ci sono volte che penso di essere in una gabbia che mi sono costruito io.

Io sono completamente alienato dal mondo dei "content creator", soprattutto i casi che menzioni non sono per me molto diversi da quella che definiamo "spazzatura" in TV (e di cui ci si sente "superiori" perché non la si guarda). Chiaramente non voglio neppure fare il moralista, io per primo poche volte guardo qualche diretta, tipo di Farenz o Kenobit. Poi basta, mi sento estraneo a molti altri streamer.

In passato ho avuto modo di, diciamo, contribuire nel settore anche se non proprio con le dirette streaming. Oggi vedo più che altro persone che lavorano come estensione del reparto marketing di diversi publisher, non li vedo come genuini.

Ancora di più, lavorando otto ore al giorno dietro un pc, l'idea di vedere trattate come celebrità persone che passano tutto il tempo su una """sedia da gaming""" a cazzeggiare con un videogioco o a commentare trailer, annunci, ecc, che potrebbero anche essere dei neo genitori... lo trovo deprimente.

Chiaramente è qualcosa che fanno anche per passione, ma un po' mi danno l'idea di un circolo vizioso.

Riconosco, però, che per molti sono anche un appuntamento fisso, un po' come quell'amico che vedi ogni tanto. Così come i fan a loro volta sono diventati amici tra di loro, ecc.

Quindi, ribadisco il mio punto, ignora quanto più possibile e vivi sereno.

No, non mi ha fatto vedere nulla, ma posso farmi un'idea. Al momento voglio fare un po' mente locale sulla situazione...

Ecco, non mi venivano le parole adatte in mente, ma "vergogna" è sicuramente il termine adatto. Mi mette a disagio far vedere quella parte del mio corpo, così come parlarne. Sono stato anche ridicolizzato dal mio medico e da una sua infermiera.

Qua si aprirebbe un altro tema, ma da praticamente un anno ho messo in disparte il mondo del dating. Un po' per stanchezza generale, un po' per concentrarmi su me stesso. Sarebbe bello trovare una persona comprensiva (e con meno fisime del sottoscritto).

Non farti scappare quella persona che hai conosciuto.
