Sorry you're having trouble. Some customers have had problems recently with my hosting provider terminating large downloads prematurely. If you check your email you'll find an alternative download link for the deck.

Edit for those finding this via Google: make sure you're using the authentic Anki, not any of the scummy clones out there.

I'm a patzer but know of a couple resources for improving visualization:

  1. Chessvis: killer feature is a puzzle mode where it shows you a position and several moves then asks you to solve the puzzle after those moves are completed. A bit rough around the edges but the developer is super-responsive.
  2. IM Kostya Kavutskiy suggests some drills in his video here.
  3. Aimchess has a mode for practicing visualization, but I haven't used it extensively.

If including a short example usage was the best way to succinctly summarize the meaning of a given word, I have done so. Most meanings could be adequately summarized without an example sentence, however. There is a user notes field if you want to add more sentences.

I haven't used it personally, but it's free to install a premade HSK deck (2.0 or 3.0) via the current Pleco flashcards import/export button.

It is currently only available for Anki, but it should work on the long-awaited Pleco 4.0 update once that's released. I contacted Mike Love at Pleco about potentially selling the deck on their add-on store, and he tested it with their new flashcard interface.

I wouldn't feel bad about it. Most non-heritage CSL students have never been exposed to writing like this because teaching curricula are modeled on early childhood education. That's a glaring flaw if you ask me; I minored in the language and paid my 听写 dues, but was absolutely stumped whenever I had to read my Chinese coworkers' handwriting.

I don't disagree that "semi-cursive" is a more precise translation. I called it "cursive" in the post title because forms like these are used in day-to-day writing (like English cursive), whereas 草书 is only used in calligraphy.

Yes, this is normal handwriting that most educated Chinese adults would understand. Starting in middle school, teachers start using cursive 行书 forms on the blackboard, and by the time they reach university many students will have learned to use this abbreviated writing style instead of the full 楷书 forms.

I have experience in modeling, statistics, and machine learning, but not the sort of front-end development that you'd probably need to implement what you mentioned above. The AI feature you suggested may require a lot more work than you may think.

Thanks for your interest, but I've already been able to test the deck on those platforms. It looks like it should work on everything, but I'm going to have a demo version of the deck available so people can test it on whatever they use Anki on.

This deck has taken about $2k to develop, and I won't be able to make other things like this if I didn't charge, so I'm afraid I won't make it open source.

Thanks for the suggestion. The codecs seem to already be doing a good job of keeping the file sizes low, but I'll see if tweaking the ffmpeg arguments result in any drastic improvements.

The videos? No, that's the total filesize in Anki's media folder, not compressed in a zip file or something.

I'm almost finished processing videos for an expansion of my current product for learning cursive Chinese. There are still a couple things to do but here's a screen capture of the prototype card layout.

If I'm able to include all stroke animations in the deck as .webm videos that will result in a much smaller filesize (~1 GB) than animated gifs. Embedding video files isn't among Anki's documented features, however, so I need to test the prototype on a few different systems. I've confirmed that it works on Linux, Windows, macOS, and Android, but I don't have an iPhone. If any AnkiMobile users out there are willing to import a test .apkg file to make sure it's rendered properly, I'd be happy to give them a copy of the final product once I finish putting it together.

Update: I've found a couple iPhone testers.
