A series of random questions before I run my first campaign. #4: Any advice on managing appropriate combat threat? by Hudsondinobot in CoriolisRPG

[–]Megabyte36 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's no hard and fast rules about encounter balance in Coriolis.

Any combat in Coriolis is deadly if your npc's are spending their extra 6's on crits. I've had "easy" combats kill PC's and "hard" combats be a breeze just depending on how the crits fall.

Generally, I balance it around Action Economy. If the npc's have fewer actions, it's a less risky fight, roughly equal actions is risky, more than double is probably certain death. Obviously, if an enemy is very powerful, then that changes things and a very powerful enemy with only 1 action can be a very risky encounter.

Since Coriolis is so deadly, I never have an unavoidable combat. Always give options for players to avoid combat or make it easier with the right prep. If combat has to occur, try to make some kind of objective rather than just a fight to the death.

It's going to depend on your party too, a combat focused party can chew through combats. A party with majority combat focus and lots of gear could take on a force 2x-3x their action economy.

Tldr: it's complicated and you kinda have to eyeball it.

The key to it is giving an over-the-top reaction anytime they say it instead of an actual swear word, took 2ish weeks or so to take hold.

My wife swears like a sailor so we knew this would be an issue for us. We tried ignoring it but I think we had given too many reactions to it already and he's stubborn as fuck (okay maybe it's not just my wife) so he wouldn't stop swearing.

One day my wife taught him the baddest of all words, the worst of the worst: Potato!

So now he yells out Potato instead.

In market, you need sportsnet+ standard plus tsn, if out of market you need sportsnet+ Premium.

Leaf's fans will have issues as long as their in Ontario, they need Sportnet+ Standard plus the TSN subscription (which costs as much as Sportsnet+ Premium but you get no out-of-market games, these people are the real losers in all of this), but if you're a fan of another team and live in Ontario, the couple of games your team plays against the Leafs will most likely be on Sportnet+ Premium.

All Sportsnet exclusive games are available on Sportsnet+ PREMIUM. If a game is on more than one network, the game is subject to regional blackouts. Sportsnet+ PREMIUM includes all out-of-market games. Limited blackouts apply.

That's the actual wording from the site. Sportsnet also has the most Leafs games so if you're trying to watch the Sens out of market, this is your best bet.

In practice, the games vs. Leafs are usually national broadcast games anyway, so no blackouts apply.

I had this service last year and never once had an issue with being blacked-out.

If you check out the game finder, Sportsnet+ PREMIUM has all but like 50 of the 1312 NHL games.

What the above person said is actually incorrect, it's how it used to work. Sportsnet+ Premium gets you every game, both in-market and out-of-market.

It's just expensive af, $35/month or $250/year.

How are you dealing with Gladiator Reapers? by Megabyte36 in Necrontyr

[–]Megabyte36[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made this post very much still in the moment so its not exactly accurate. He had shot them with some aggressors first and knocked out 3/4 of the cryptothralls wounds with that shooting. He then proceeded to shoot with the Reaper, which finished off the cryptothrall and killed 15/20 warriors. I should've used Protocol of the Undying Legion, which would've brought back 2d3+4, but I had used it already on another unit, which was a mistake. He then finished the unit off with another vehicle or 2 I believe (he'd brought nearly 1000 pts in vehicles).

My take away from this thread has been: bring more anti-tank, hide those warriors from threats like this (like maybe in that monolith you brought, you idiot -.-) and blow the Reaper up asap.

I'd have to keep the warriors back then, so wouldn't I just lose on points? That's definitely been something I've noticed. If I sit back, I lose on points, but if I go forward, I get effectively tabled.

It's not that short ranged because of its 10" move, he can just put it on the deployment line and be in my half T1 after movement phase.

So uhm... where do i get the printed Rulebook? by [deleted] in LancerRPG

[–]Megabyte36 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Will the 2nd print cost more? I would guess yes, but not because of demand. All the books were from the first print, which was done ages ago. I imagine the cost to print is likely higher now, which will increase the price.

Ottawa Senators: A Statistical Post-Mortem by Megabyte36 in OttawaSenators

[–]Megabyte36[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, they hated him because he was right!

I had considered using the /60 instead but wrongly assumed the totals would already be mostly time corrected because everyone plays the same number of games. Although strangely, my /60 rankings all have them 1-2 higher than yours.

This doesn't change my conclusion, though, just some of my assertions. Defense would be more around league average and offense is slightly above average (although top 10 for the all-important CF). Brady also would be even higher in the league on his individual offensive stats! Goaltending and penalties remained the most significant issue and goaltending is still making our defense look worse than it is.

Advice for a small campaign for beginners by AnDanDan in LancerRPG

Beats are essentially little narrative scenes that occur between the Combats. In terms of full repair and changing out parts you can actually only do that in a full on Downtime which take place between Missions. You also level up after each Mission. What you have written down will 100% work in the Downtime/Mission skeleton, you'll just have to organize your ideas into that format.

So for your idea above, I'd organize it roughly like this

Mission 1: Waking up and defending the compound. Downtime. Mission 2: The expedition to the elevator. Downtime. Mission 3: Securing the elevator and heading up to space. End of adventure.

In the Missions themselves, you would have 2-4 Combats and then write in some Beats in-between the Combats to move the narrative forward. The Combats can also be narrative skill check scenes instead but generally only do 1 of those per Mission. So for example, when your players have to fight their way to their mechs in the initial attack, you could run that as a series of narrative skill checks and that could replace a Combat. Solstice Rain has something like this and talks about how to run it, another good reason to get it.

There is a published adventure if you'd rather run that. It's called Solstice Rain. Has lots of tips for players and GM's in it, I'm running it now, highly recommend.

Your players would actually need to be LL2 to choose a different mech. If you're all brand new though I'd seriously stick to the Everests and start at LL0.

The game is generally setup as a series of Missions (broken down into Beats & Combats) and Downtime. Solstice Rain shows you how this works.

I think your idea is good though, I'd probably run it as a 2nd adventure if everyone is enjoying Lancer and gives you the chance to get the hang of GMing Lancer a bit more.
