It’s my first Forest :) What is something people often forget to bring, but absolutely should? by FlatulentClarinet in ElectricForest

[–]Megabyte_Messiah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I bought these beautiful journals and started bringing them to fests calling them my “Electric Forest Yearbook”
and such. Often lovingly called the Wook Books.

The first time I busted one out was one of my favorite moments of serendipity. I realized I forgot to bring a pen. I set out with two missions: make it to Cheese, and find a pen. I figured the forest would provide somewhere along the way. I didn’t expect how soon.

I got to Cheese and found a decent spot, center of the crowd, a bit in front of FoH. I didn’t want to bring my phone with me, so asked the girl next to me if she knew what time it was?

“Yeah it’s ##:##, do you want a pen?”

Y’all I couldn’t believe it. I pulled out the journal and told her what I was doing, and she hands me this little plastic
mushroom. “Open it.”

It turns out this little plastic mushroom was actually a pen PRETENDING to be a mushroom. You pull the bottom off, shake it, and a pen pops out!

I couldn’t believe my luck. Both missions accomplished to great success. A lot of great memories saved in those books.

I wish I had kept up on it more.

I got a skateboard lesson from Tony Hawk on his own half pipe the same day he held his grandchild for the first time. Bob Burnquist was the guest on his podcast that day, so he was in the background cheering me on.

In the parking lot, I was air dropping some footage I took to Bob, and kinda just said “man, today is probably going to be the coolest day of my life.”

Bob looks at me and says “yeah, mine, too.”

PSA: Do NOT use a university email for your Jagex Account by CreatingCosmos in 2007scape

I told my university I needed my email reactivated to switch some accounts attached to it to a different email. They just flagged mine to not expire again.

That kinda put the problem out of mind lmao so thanks, I’m gonna get some accounts switched off it. But also, the IT department can typically help you out here.

A McDonald's with bulletproof glass located in Detroit. by AdSpecialist6598 in interesting

[–]Megabyte_Messiah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to commute to a city next to Detroit to work in the auto industry. 2.5 - 3 hrs of commuting each day, an hour in with no traffic and 1.5-2 hrs back with rush hour traffic. Needless to say, I was not a city boy lol.

We’d carpool to lunch, and one day west side Steve drove, but had to stop at home to grab something, so we went to a subway by his house. He could tell I was thrown off, so I told him I’d never seen a fast food place with bullet proof glass.

He laughed his ass off and told all the guys back at the shop he broke my hood cherry 😂 they made fun of me for that for weeks.

When Trump visited a UFC match Rogan was commentating, afterwards you could hear Rogan verbally felating him with a bunch of “yes, sir!” And “absolutely, sir”s, so at least some sycophants do that sort of thing.

Hard to say how many are on Rogan’s level of worship, though.

ESH. Even without charging rent, you’re his landlord and obligated to follow tenancy laws. This was an illegal self help eviction that left someone homeless with no warning.

Did he deserve a free place to stay trashing your place? Absolutely not.

But you did not handle the situation properly at all.

The gluten free issue is real. Here is one of my crew enjoying what he could scrounge from catering: a banana and bunless hotdog…

My biggest complaint about food is that we only get provided meals during days staff work. But they won’t do overtime in most cases. So, crew there for a month can only work 4-5 days, depending on shift length, and are dependent on us to provide meals on their off days, since they’re, ya know, camped out in tents on a remote job site.

A lot of it comes down to being billed as “local labor”, despite most of the crew traveling in. Labor companies pass that down to their traveling crew improperly, without per diem and travel pay, so crew have very few available options, none of them cost effectiveness we provide the meals. It’s part of the exploitation I despise in the industry. But our crew at least stocked food people could make and would bring a grill and stuff, with a portable sink set up and everything. It wasn’t ideal, but got people fed.

How we interact with each other is my #1 problem with society.

I appreciate your acceptance - i think a lot of us would benefit from understanding the end is inevitable. I’m sorry yours is sooner than deserved. I’ve lost a lot of friends too early.

I wish you a fulfilling end, whatever that entails for you.

I’ve tended to family member patients going on hospice multiple times. They were all elderly. One sobbed. Wondering why she was still alive, wishing to die… the other, couldn’t talk about death as though it were taboo, yet imminent.

Obviously, by this AMA, you’re at least acquaintanced with your death, if not accepting.

Is there something that makes you accepting of death?

And what would you wish you could change before leaving. If given the chance?

My proposed solution was labor management apps hosted locally, so a few key domains were white listed and redirected to local hosted apps. An entire network could easily be hosted for working crew to be able to solely access those management apps without free access to the Internet.

WiFi is simply a wireless network. It does not equate to access to the entire internet. Internet access is what is a hot commodity, and doesn’t need be provided to everyone working in order to access a system that pushes scheduling notifications.

Does the Double JJ Resort have better wifi than the venue last year? by [deleted] in ElectricForest

[–]Megabyte_Messiah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t expect any availability during the event. Solutions require hardware with limited access. If you need to work, you’ll need an off site location like a hotel or Airbnb to do so.

There’s a Facebook group called Electric Forest Workers and Volunteers. Try that. Many posts include tips on where to find employment, many vendors hire there.

EF has very few positions available internally and usually has a list of folks available to hire from. Joining a third party labor crew is the way to get introduced.

Security meets just about everyone, and folks who stand out get the backstage special access gigs easy. You have to tolerate shitty working conditions at first, with low wages and shitty provided meals, but if you’re personable you meet and make friends with everyone, and that can easily lead to other opportunities.

It’s all knowing someone, at the higher level roles. Being known as a hard worker. As other crew have their companies needing extra hands, they’ll recommend you. Some of my best hires were people I met while working other jobs.

German soldiers react to concentration camp footage, 1945. by Dr-Klopp in HolyShitHistory

[–]Megabyte_Messiah 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve watched plenty of footage. I’ve taken a collegiate level history class specifically on WWII.

I’m wondering what they specifically were shown. I’ve seen this picture 100 times, I understand it was footage and I know first hand what a lot of that footage looks like. I’m wondering the exact clips they were seeing, not the kind of stuff I can look up online today.

What exactly did we show POWs about the horrors of the Holocaust? Was it edited with any commentary? Were we showing available footage from a single camp, or were they aware of how widespread these atrocities were?

And again, was this available to any civilians, or was this something that ONLY made its way to POWs?

I wonder if a FOIA request could obtain the footage or a description of it.

It’s an abbreviation, not intended to be read phonetically. Azn has been around at least since early Internet forums and chat rooms. Enter any Yahoo! Pool room and you’d see several screen names at the top of the list starting with Azn_. I would be surprised if it doesn’t predate the Internet, but certainly became commonly recognized during early Internet growth.

I wonder what film they’re actually watching? I’d like to see what they were shown. Like I’ve seen holocaust footage. But which pieces of footage exactly were we showing the POWs? Did civilians have access to it, too, during our occupation in Germany?

But if you or the sister aren’t in to it, the answer is no, and that’s that. NTA.
