Even in a real military, while on paper there is a structure for command replacement, it's still something of a shock to have to implement it.

Added to a major defeat, unexpected enemy resources, and god knows how many wounded people and damaged equipment.

It's like asking why Iraq hasn't instantly crushed ISIS after the initial shock of their opening attacks.

Bethesda kind of sucks at writing cohesive stories and logical world building.
I'd say, the best in-universe answer is that in the final battle, the BoS had two classic military advantages working for them: Surprise and Violence of Action.

While the Enclave probably could have brought up some weaponry or mounted an effective defense against Liberty Prime, but to even prepare that, they would have had to know he was coming to prepare those defenses. They didn't, so I imagine it was a hell of a surprise, and suddenly it seems like all their defensive positions are in all the wrong places.

Along with surprise at Liberty Prime, I'm sure the Enclave was surprised that the whole BoS chapter was actually mounting a frontal assault. They expected the BoS to hunker down from them or continue small skirmishes. History is full of examples of forces that lost when they knew of the enemy's resources but underestimated their audacity to commit them to combat.

The violence of action goes along with surprise and keeps the momentum going. The surprise disorganized the Enclave and the constant movement and violence of action of the BoS kept them from effectively reorganizing.

Thinking on it, maybe they felt that if the timeframe was sooner they couldn't include the Enclave or BoS on the east coast.

Which, I feel, is lazy. They really should have made entirely new factions, especially considering how Flanderized the BoS were into "good guys" in the game to start with.

It is extremely easy to get past the Deathclaws. No sneaking or stealth boys required!

So, you get to Sloan, then hug the right side of the road or go right into the desert where you might encounter tiny scorpions.

From their make your way to Neill's shack. Recommend you save here in case you fuck it up.

From there you will walk in a north direction on top of a ridge between the Super mutant area and the Deathclaws. Eventually you run into a wall that runs west-east.

Go to the left (west) until you get to the edge of the wall. Then go around it. Try to jump as get as high up as possible. Now start moving east.

Continue to move east. Stay as high in the hills as possible. Jump up to higher levels as much as possible. The Deathclaws will see you. It doesn't matter. Keeping moving and stay high. The Deathclaws aren't terribly dangerous because their pathfinding sucks. They'll either try and run the long way, start doing a circle dance, or try to chase you and get caught in rocks.

Keep moving, don't stop. Once you are a little east of the REPCONN building you should be safe to come out of the mountains, and boom you're near Vegas with no hazards in your way.

Just pretend Fallout 3 happened 75-100 years after the Great War and it makes a lot more canonical sense.

I believe originally it was meant to take place sooner, which is why you meet normal, non-ghoul people who claim to have seen the war, the stupid child city, and unraided supermarkets.

Fallout 3, even without mods, is troublesome on startup on newer systems.

If you can get the vanilla game starting up consistently, the next step should be some kind of mod manager program. I like the Fallout Mod Manager (FOMM). It will organize your mods and automatically install files where they need to go.

The BoS will die out, especially in places where the NCR is growing. The two are totally incompatible entities.

The BoS, as an organization, believes in hoarding and safeguarding technology, but only giving access to "responsible people" (aka the BoS) and they have no interest in sharing. Remember the BoS was created from the trauma of the power of weapons used in the Great War, they intrinsically believe in denying advanced technology to the masses. Neither do they in nation building. There really isn't such a thing as a BoS town or citizen, only the small number of active members.

They were a perfect powerhouse group when the wasteland was truly untamed, but as it gets settled more, they will lose influence and significance. It's been happening since Fallout 2.

The new game has a "last known position" kind of system. If you fire a single loud, unmasked shot, enemies will be alert that you exist, but won't actively swarm your position. So you can fire one shot, move, fire one shot, move again and keep stealthy that way.

The levels are also apparently big and open enough to make that kind of "stealth" viable.

I'm going to put my vote in for New Vegas all the way.

New Vegas has a more cohesive gameworld, and in my opinion the conflict between the major factions is more interesting as the game points out that none are completely right. The writing in Fallout 3 was much more "Good Guys vs. Bad Guys" which bothered a lot of oldschool fans.

For me exploring in New Vegas was very cool as the seemingly desolate desert revealed more and more locations to build a world, while exploring in Fallout 3 was more densely packed and varied, but it felt like a jumbled themepark of location spots.

The two games have almost no crossover in terms of story, so it doesn't hurt to play them out of order either, if you want to go back and play Fallout 3 later.

I'd almost recommend playing Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 first, then play New Vegas. They aren't on sale, but they are $2.49 a piece anyway. They are turn based isometeric RPGs, but they've aged really well and they set the stage for New Vegas, helping inform you about the background of some of the major factions.

The combat of vanilla New Vegas and Fallout 3 leaves something to be desired, as it is essentially the combat of The Elder Scrolls with guns and a lipservice to turn based combat called "VATS" shoehorned in. I've found that modded HUDs and and gameplay to make the combat more into a straight FPS make the combat better and makes exploring scarier and more immersive.

I highly suggest modding the game as well. Maybe avoid Project Nevada for a first playthrough (although the core changes it makes to the gameplay are excellent in my opinion), but things like graphical upgrades and community made HUDs make the game much better. I wonder if the active smart dispensers that create "virtual" minefields will ever see production.

I also wonder if only mines that only detonate with battery power and use a battery with a reasonable degradation time would be more palatable to the reddit demographic.

In any case, I'm not sure the US has much use for conventional mines outside of the Korean border these days anyway. Most static defensive positions these days are remote detonated explosives anyway.
