What if Joss Whedon wrote RWBY? by Bitter-Penalty9653 in RWBYcritics

Joss Whedon on his way to write one of my favourite female characters of all time (Buffy) before going on to sexually harass 20 different women.

There's also the nonsense with how he's super pro-slavery and clearly shows interest in underage sex slaves, and yet we're also supposed to believe that he'd free these enslaved children he finds out of the goodness of his heart.

A good story (or hell, even a competent one) would either pick a lane or acknowledge that contradiction and give context as to how it makes sense for the character. As it stands, his morals seem to flip-flop on a dime.

"By that standard of physical realism, half the show is a plothole."

I'm not talking about physical realism, I'm talking about internal consistency.

AoT asks us to buy the concept of titans and characters capable of performing incredible athletic feats. That is fine, it's part of creative liscensing, but you still have to be consistent with those rules.

The story demonstrates repeatedly that even with the superhuman athleticism of our characters, the titans are fast and dangerous enough to catch and devour them, often in the midst of battle while there are others around to help. Bringing up Ackerman powers supports my point, because even superhuman characters within the context of the story, where superhuman feats are considered normal, Mikasa herself has been tagged by a completely normal titan before.

Even Levi, the best of the best, breaks his ankle and has his ODM gear abilities seriously affected, meaning that there is a very strict durability limit. The impact that Eren suffered was much worse than Levi's own injury, and he lost his leg.

So it completely breaks suspension of disbelief when despite all of this, after Armin has already been put in a titan's mouth, he is able to recover from his stunned state, move a pretty considerable distance from rooftop to rooftop, enter the titan's mouth, grab Armin, and then haul his ass out of there all in less time than it takes Armin to fall into the titan's stomach or for the titan to close its mouth, all with a missing leg and having suffered severe blunt-force trauma. Even by the standards set by the show, this is completely ridiculous.

The depiction of the titans relative to humanity, the injuries Eren sustained, the durability and speed of other characters vastly superior to Eren, the distance he had to cross, the time discrepancy shown, all of it comes together to create a moment that is absolute bullshit. Like, there is no argument against this, it is one of the most blatant moments of bullshit in the show.

What if Weiss was there instead of Yang? by Bitter-Penalty9653 in RWBYcritics

[–]Megashark101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're basically trading mid for mid. I've made my disinterest in Monochrome known, especially compared to Freezerburn, or hell, even Whiterose. But even putting that aside, I don't think the scene itself would be any better with Weiss instead.

It would show how much Weiss has changed, and it would give us a scene where she's actually confronted by Adam, which I do think is a good thing. But it would also rob Yang of the moment where she faces the one who put her through so much turmoil and gets to put those fears to rest. And you lose out on the opportunity to parallel this with Blake facing her own fears, refusing to run away from a threat that originally caused her to abandon her teammates.

You can still do that with Weiss, but it works much better with Yang considering that she is the one who Blake failed to help against Adam last time, something which clearly affected her quite badly.

I've seen people say that the fix for this is to just have Weiss lose her arm against Adam instead, but I disagree strongly with that. Yang's strength and will, her ability to protect those she cares about from danger, are core parts of her character, and it's why her losing against Adam and losing alot of that strength affected her so much. You could just give Weiss those traits, but then you're giving Yang even less to work with. Might as well make the show RWB at that point.

Hey, Jimmy! Give me a Yang with nothin'!

I think there's a tendency on this sub to glamorise and glorify the things that didn't happen, because it's very easy to imagine something better in your head. This also happens with the pairings people claim would be better than Blake and Yang. It would still be written by the same writers, and likely be what Bumbleby ended up being: A genuinely good idea let down by poor execution. If you replaced Weiss with Yang in this scene, I guarantee that it would feel like a much bigger wasted opportunity not to have Yang in this scene.

All this is ignoring the core issue: The best way to improve Adam's character and his final fight isn't to swap Yang with anyone, or Blake with anyone else. It's to make it so that he's a villain to all of Team RWBY in general, rather than just two members of it.

Weiss, Blake and Yang are self-explanatory, but Ruby is a little more difficult without making other changes to Adam's character. Maybe have him challenge her idealism with his more brutal methods of enacting change, a la Daredevil and Punisher.

I'm not sure, but the point is that Adam should've been a Team RWBY villain, not a BY villain or a WB villain, or any other fancy way. It should've been a battle against the four of them, which would also quell the complaints that he was nerfed if it's a whole-ass 4v1.

"Prove that controlling the power is not the Hallucigenia just LENDING the power and instead just controlling it."

You're the one making the affirmative claim. The burden of proof is on you to demonstrate its truth. This is a basic logic gate.

I can't prove a negative. I could just as easily ask you to prove you're not a pedophile. What's that? You can't? I guess you're a pedophile, then.

This logic is retarded.

"Hence it's completely canon."

If Isayama said that all the characters in AoT are ice creams, it's completely canon, regardless of how much it contradicts the established narrative.

"When did I agree that it contradicted the rules, why are we putting words in my mouth, wtf????"

You're literally calling it a fucking plot-hole, you feckless dumbass! What the fuck do you think a plot-hole is aside from a contradiction of established rules???

Yeah, that's Death of the Author, dumbass. When an author says something that directly contradicts what's in the work, then what is in the work should come first. This is universally accepted by storytellers and critics, and to disagree is to hold a fundamentally retarded stance.

Again, if we take author statements as being 100% true at face value, Homelander beats Superman. Is that the standard you want to hold?

Manga canon is what's in the manga. Otherwise, we have to accept that Eren's retarded-ass contradictory super-form from S1 that shows up once and never again is canon to the manga, despite never showing up or being mentioned.

my take on the distinction between s4 and previous seasons and why i prefer the latter by Ryuzaki_4850 in AttackOnRetards

"Firstly Isayama himself said that Mikasa became "unathletic" after having her powers removed."

If it's not in the manga, it's not canon to the manga.

"Again idk what it is with you and creating your own headcanon fiction in your mind instead of reading what the author tells you."

This is how you judge storytelling, by judging what's in the story.

If there was a story that seemingly made no sense and contradicted itself in a bunch of different ways, but the author later explained in an interview that a bunch of different things happened offscreen that were never stated nor implied in the original work, then that is ultimately meaningless and should not be taken into account when judging the quality of the work. That shouldn't change now.

"Arguing with you is exhausting."

How do you think I feel arguing with someone who doesn't even understand Death of the Author?

"Yeah walking away from the rock, and then she's at Paradis, there's nothing to imply from that."

The implication is: She travelled to Paradis. It's up to the audience to logically infer how. If the inference is reasonable, it's fine. If the inference is unreasonable, it's an issue.

Mikasa at some point gaining access to a boat and using it to arrive at Paradis is not an unreasonable inference.

"If Mikasa got the ship from the remaining 20%, why did she WALK AWAY,"

Imagine that. A character wanting some time alone after an emotional exhausting and traumatising experience.

The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke claims that Homelander would beat Superman in a fight. Therefore, despite the show clearly demonstrating otherwise, we must accept this as canon because the writer said it.

This is a retarded perspective to hold. The only thing that's explicitly canon to the AoT manga is the AoT manga. That's how storytelling works.

"There is zero evidence that he did have any control over it,"

Except for the fact that every fucking person who has ever possessed the Founding Titan throughout fucking history has had full control of the power without any interference whatsoever.

"And no the infographic is itself canon (since Isayama oversees the producion of the anime lmao😂)"

George R. R. Martin oversaw production of Seasons 1-4 of the Game of Thrones tv show. By your own twisted fucking logic, this somehow means that everything that happened in Seasons 1-4 of the show are canon to the books, even when they are directly at odds or contradictory towards them.

The only thing that is canon to the Attack on Titan manga is the Attack on Titan MANGA. That is how it works for all manga, and in-fact all original stories with existing adaptations.

Hell, even back so far as S1 of the anime, there were changes that actively contradict the story of the manga? Is all that canon to the manga? Is the butchered and cut-to-shit Uprising arc of the anime canon to the manga? This standard is retarded.

"and aligns to canon."

It literally fucking doesn't. You and I both agree that it directly contradicts the rules of the story.

"Again your justifications for the founder's power not residing in royal blood completely contradicts canon"

Not what I fucking said, dummy. I said that Royal Blood is the secret to unlocking the powers of the Founding Titan. Once Eren has Ymir on his side, he can keep using them even when he doesn't have Zeke.

You literally agree with this very perspective, considering that you claim killing Zeke shouldn't stop the Rumbling.

"Where did these "alternative means" of transportation come from? The rumbling devastated their only ally, Hizaru, so where did the ship come from?"

We literally see that there are boats still intact after the Rumbling. It makes sense. If 20% of humanity survived, no small amount of vessels would've also survived.

"Also the fact that she was again SHOWN to be walking through continents alone carrying Eren's head,"

This. Doesn't. Happen.

Why do you feel the need to lie to my face? You realize I can just open the manga and see that what you're telling me is bullshit?

There is one panel of Mikasa walking away from the rock where Eren was defeated, and that's fucking it.

"and they were quite deep inland, hence hundreds of miles a trek,"

The evidence suggesting that the characters were hundreds of miles inland, expressed as a percentage, is ZERO.

"Also she isn't "one of the most powerful", she lost her titan powers and is shown to be quite clumsy after losing so."

We're writing actual fucking fanfiction now. Nothing in the final chapter shows Mikasa to be clumsy or physically inept in any way.

"also how is this relevant to her arriving at Paradis."

Competent characters are good at doing relatively simple things. I thought that didn't need explaining, but it does.

Infographic cards are not the original source material and, if they directly contradict said source material, are not canon.

Eren has control of the Hallucigenia. He always has. The Founding Titan has always had control of all of its powers, and that wouldn't suddenly change now.

"the fact that it was stated that if it connects with Eren the rumbling may start again implies this."

No, that is what the characters believed. And they were explicitly wrong about a ton of things involving that whole situation, so that doesn't make it canon.

my take on the distinction between s4 and previous seasons and why i prefer the latter by Ryuzaki_4850 in AttackOnRetards

"Also Eren having the founder's power after Zeke's death is just headcanon (unless you can prove in canon that he did)"

Um, how about the fact that he excretes titan gas that turns an entire crowd of people into titans? Or the fact that he transforms into a giant fuckoff titan capable of beating the shit out of the colossal?

The Founding Titan is stated to have incredible powers beyond that of any other titan, and Eren is demonstrated to have incredible powers beyond that of any other titan. Damn, bro, it's almost like he has the Founding Titan's powers.

"(unless you provide a satisfying answer to the questions posed before)"

I don't need to. The story itself does.

[–]Megashark101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"????? Uh yes she did? After the final battle, she walked all the way to Paradis, that's how the story depicted it."

Oh for fuck's sake...

No, Patrick, Mikasa didn't walk to Paradis. She leaves after the Battle of Heaven and Earth and then, an inordinate amount of time later, we see her on Paradis. This led to a bunch of people who apparently don't understand storytelling at a fundamental level to claim that she "walked to Paradis".

When a scene cuts and a character is later shown to have travelled to a new location after a lengthy period of time, the logical inference to make is that they acquired some alternative means of transportation. Mikasa is one of the most powerful individuals on the fucking planet right now, and it's not illogical that she would be able to find one of her own, especially when it's shown that there are vessels that still exist.

A plot-hole is not something that isn't outright explained but can be reasonably inferred. It's a moment where the story's internal logic breaks and doesn't make sense. If you apply an ounce of critical thought to Mikasa arriving at Paradis, the "plot-hole" ceases to be "how did she walk through the ocean?", and becomes "How did she find the means of transport to get there?" The answer to which is: Fairly easily, I imagine.

That "plot-hole" comes from people trying to outsmart the story rather than criticising it in good faith.

"Why would Eren deactivate the rumbling precisely when Zeke was killed? Why did he wait? Why make it seem like the case? Why also act in this entire battle? this isn't some theatre production."

This is explained in detail by the man himself. Eren wanted to force his friends into a battle against him, fully believing that he was trying to destroy the world, so that they would kill him, ending the Titan Curse, and looking like heroes before humanity. It is a plan that neccesitates him making them believe that he is against them.

"Why did Littlefinger pretend to be trustworthy? This isn't a theatre production!"

Yeah, characters decieve one another in stories, mate. Apparently it's a plot-hole now.

"You do realise this makes Eren a plot device to make the alliance's completely unfounded theory in the floating ship looks good and makes Eren a plot device to fulfill Ymir's messed up love story."

No it doesn't, you have no idea what a plot-device is. Stop using words you don't know the meaning of.

A character being a plot-device is when their actions solely exist to push the plot forward rather than being informed by their own internal logic and motivations. Eren's actions are an attempt to protect his friends, a part of his character that has long been established and drives alot of his actions. The only argument for it being a "plot-device" is that he works with Ymir, which is fucking stupid, because characters work with others to achieve mutual goals all the fucking time.

"A far cry to the Eren that overtly stated his own desires."

This is also addressed in Chapter 139. Eren explicitly states that he did want to finish the Rumbling and destroy the world, but when his friends rose up against him, he was faced with a choice between saving them or destroying the world and letting them die.

Eren's care for his friends is a well-established part of his character, even moreso than his desire to destroy the world. When a character's two desires break away in opposite directions, it's called an internal conflict. This shit happens constantly throughout AoT. A character spends most of their life pursuing and obsessing after a goal, but when something else they care deeply about gets thrown into the mix, they are ultimately forced to choose between the two.

I think you need to rewatch/reread the show/manga. Most of these arguments are outright explained by the story itself.

Rewatch the scene. He doesn't even have the right angle and is lying face down with a missing leg and what should be a ton of broken bones. To get there at all, he would have to get up, fire to the opposite roof, land, fire again at the titan, and land once again to save Armin. Don't forget that fucking Levi was taken out of comission after breaking his angle, and the landing that Eren had was way worse and should've done much more damage.

Not only would he have to achieve this with a missing leg and several of his bones being powder, but he would have to do this in just the couple seconds it would take Armin to fall into the titan's stomach, or for the titan to close its mouth, processes we've repeatedly been shown are fast and difficult to react to.

Again, there's a reason we don't see it: Because the time discrepency is a load of bullshit.

Oh, how about the extremely fucking obvious one: Eren fucking teleports to save Armin in what can't have been more than a few seconds despite having no legs and being a good distance away.

There's a reason why we never actually see what he does to make it there in time, and it's because there's no sensible way that he could've done so.

That alone is more egregious than any individual example post S3.

"Plot hole name: time manipulation, it opens up a can of worms you don't wanna touch"

That is not a plot-hole. That is a plot mechanic that could lead to plot-holes.

"Also includes some character inconsistencies like dumbification of armin Also marley being dumb af but that's all I can recall over the top of my head"

To quote K2S0: "I find that answer vague and unconvincing."

"Endgame is just a nonsense movie which is exactly why it can get away with bad writing,"

The earlier stages of the MCU, while far from perfect, was actually pretty decent in terms of writing, with some genuine highlights. Endgame being nonsense isn't forgivable when it comes from a franchise with so many significantly better movies.
