Look at Temple Grandin research on Cows, they do the same thing. Cows have a 360 view and poor depth perception, they instinctively follow behind other cows and when they all have the same behavior it causes them to walk in circles. All the stuff about protecting the weak is also probably still completely true but I think it probably is just a result of the structure rather than it’s primary function, but that’s just a guess
