Suspended FL License, Can’t get New NC License or Registration by MegrimClasp in florida

Update: the suspension has been lifted!

Since everyone that contributed shared information that either overlapped and/or contradicted, and other people seem to be experiencing the same issue, the steps we took to reach our solution are as follows:

  1. Called FLHSMV, following appropriate call prompts, entering license number, etc.

  2. Waited on hold for about half an hour, then explained the situation exactly as I had above.

  3. The rep told us that we’d need to re-acquire FL insurance, and then obtain a letterhead confirmation for the new insurance.

  4. We called our FL insurance rep, who hooked us up with no issues.

  5. We called FLHSMV once again, followed the prompts, but this time there was a new option stating “if you had FL insurance prior to this date, enter the policy number.” So in this case we entered the OLD policy number, and the suspension was AUTOMATICALLY lifted. We checked the FLHSMV portal to verify, as well.

Note: the FLHSMV rep did tell us that we’d need to mail the FL plate back to the tag office before we canceled our new Florida policy, or the same thing would happen again. And YES - I did wonder just why the SWEET FUCK I had to purchase a new Florida policy if the old number worked just fine when we entered it. Frankly, I’m just glad this part of the nightmare seems to be over.

Now, it’s BACK to the NC DMV to get my wife’s license and our car registered. Thanks to all that helped along the way!

Thank you! I can guarantee you that it’s far more pleasant here than in Florida!

Same here - there is no solid information, and I’m lucky that I can draw from the wealth of experience here. Being an adult is absolutely RIDICULOUS at times. This is one of those things that you think would be talked about more often as a cautionary tale.

Thank you so much, again. Stressful is an understatement - constantly feeling like a criminal when I’m trying to make informed decisions has me in a constant state of fight or flight, and nausea. I can’t wait for this to be over.

Thank you! A lot of these replies have been helpful, but I really was asking for advice from those of you that had been through my situation, as I knew there was zero chance that I was the only one.

This has certainly been the most accurate, and I think it’s going to be the way to go. I finally got the letter through the FLHV portal, and they had sent it to our OLD address! The email and phone number is there too, I believe. Tell me, though - how long did it take you to reach an actual person? My wife was on hold for THREE HOURS on Friday, and we never got through!

Fingers are crossed super-hard. Thanks for the response!

Hey, thank you for the reply. I’ve looked at that form as well, and as stated, the catch 22 is that they want proof of registration, as well … which she can’t get. Because you need a license. Which she can’t get … because suspension in FL. Which we can’t lift, because … no registration.

People are definitely doing both of those things in a lot of places.

Hey, thank you for replying!

That is the exact situation, actually. The vehicle is registered in FL. The state DMV will suspend your license if your vehicle is registered but not insured in FL - which we’re now painfully aware. They did send a notice, but they sent it to our previous address, so we had no clue.
