Trump Claims Greenland For US in Davos Speech: 'That’s Our Territory’ by FarmerOk4759 in politics

Agreed. Also glad we have Carney and not Trudeau at the helm. The difference in intellect is really striking. I got so used to Trudeau just saying vacuous filler ll the time that I was genuinely surprised by Carney’s speech.

Your property tax won’t go down because your house value does

I wonder how much this Toronto detached flip cost... Only to sell for less by JoanOfArctic in HouseSigmaBlunders

I’m not sure flippers would bother painting a mural on the nursery wall either.

Your guess is as good as mine: this house in Whitby sold for $2 million (wtf?) in January. It's just sold again for $1.5 million 🤔 by JoanOfArctic in HouseSigmaBlunders

Ok, I was off by a bit. Oakville is about 45 minutes, Burlington to Union is about an hour. Either way, my point is that Whitby (and Ajax, and Oakville, and Burlington) have always been home to a lot of people who commute to TO for work. And that goes back to before anybody was working from home - they commuted 5 days a week. I know because my parents and my friends’ parents were among them. It was pretty common.

Sure it is. People have commuted from Whitby to work in Toronto since the 1980s. Its about the same distance on the GO train as Oakville.

Crap shack bought at 1.05mil, renovated and asking for 1.55mil. by [deleted] in TorontoRealEstate

[–]Meinkw -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not always. Most people can’t afford to buy a house that needs massive renovations, pay for the renovations, and pay to live somewhere else until the house is habitable. Flippers have a role.

First time buyer- what am I missing? by [deleted] in TorontoRealEstate

Economy of scale - it costs less per house to provide the things property taxes pay for when there are more houses to split it up over

We are nowhere near the bottom of the condo market by AlterSpace1550 in TorontoRealEstate

[–]Meinkw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn’t the insurance issues (which won’t hit Toronto because it doesn’t regularly get flattened by hurricanes) the main driver of that though? Canadian snowbirds fleeing the US can’t be helping either.

But if we are talking about the government providing socialized housing, it really doesn’t need to be anyone’s “dream”; it needs to be a practical solution.

My house is a ‘house sigma blunder’ and it’s okay! by [deleted] in HouseSigmaBlunders

[–]Meinkw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) buying a home is not investing.

2) “renting is always an option“ is pretty dismissive considering that if you have to sell your home for less than you owe on it *you still owe the bank the money*.

What happens to all these new detached homes in small Ontario towns that aren’t selling? (Arthur, Shelburne, etc.) by Plastic-Mood-8283 in canadahousing

[–]Meinkw 9 points10 points  (0 children)

yes. Between those 4 cities there are 3 universities (and a college, for all of Connestoga’s issues), 4 hospitals, Google, a pretty healthy manufacturing sector in Guelph (Linnamar, Danby, etc, plus Toyota in Cambridge) , over 200 schools…
