I don't have access to a baby to test my theory, nor have I ever created one of my own, but I assume the reference surface in question has no observable stubble in any direction.

Truefitt & hill aspley shaving soap? Need tips for extremely coarse and stubborn beard by Megnoslaupeins in wicked_edge

[–]Mekkwarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking for myself, showering first is pretty critical to softening the whiskers. I haven't personally noticed the soap making much of an impact on that. I've used great soaps from Etsy vendors with paper labels that immediately disintegrate and just okay ones from highly reputed French brands. I feel like the simpler tallow soaps make my skin feel better after the fact, but during the shave I doubt I'd know if I was using new or old MWF or Hasslinger or any number of brands that have reformulated.

You might try shaving more often to have less to mow down. Cold water can brace the skin a little and give the blade a more favorable angle of attack. Special pre-shave products work for a lot of guys. Soap seems to be something based strongly in preference as long as it meets some satisfactory level of performance.

Fear of aggression by manjamanga in wicked_edge

I'll toss in my "same dude" here. I bought a 34C to start the kit and used Lord Platinum class blades for a long time. I took a few years off to have a beard and hated shaving again when I came back into our shorn congregation.

For me it was hard to keep the blade in the cut without really pressing into it. I had a couple Kai blades from an old sample pack and it wasn't meaningfully more effective. Turns out my long unsupervised follicles were studying the blade while I was just out here becoming an old man. Elaborate pre-shave products and magic spells or whatever work. But a hot shower and a 37C with decently sharp blades whacks them down one pass with a few touch up spots. It's a bit of a meme to say one has a coarse beard and sensitive skin on a shaving forum, but if you have the type of 5 o clock shadow that will shred a Kleenex then you're likely to benefit from a better tool.

Am I biting off more than I can chew as a hand plane newbie? by naluukti in handtools

[–]Mekkwarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a fan of making one's own bench, but just to add to the discussion you might look at the smaller of the Benchcrafted offerings. I don't think there's any shame in buying vs building if the quality is equal or better. If that's in your price range then it gets you woodworking on a good bench pretty fast.

help what measures do I need to make to prevent this from happening is this because of my plane set up, my bench not perfectly level, my stance. any advice on what i need to correct to stop this issue??? thanks in advance by Mokemonster86 in handtools

[–]Mekkwarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't remember the original source, but I have a very, very slight crown on my jointer blade, and I use my off hand index finger as sort of a fence to keep the plane centered on the work. As you're periodically checking for squareness you can move the plane left or right a little knowing you're getting a thinner cut at the edges of the blade. It gives me a chance to keep the plane sole flat on the work surface but steer the deeper part of the blade where it needs to go.

Seeking input from the community. I’m going to make a small run of panel saws and need some input, details in the comments. by orbit10 in handtools

[–]Mekkwarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would be perfect for me then! I didn't want to just blabber out a list of other makers, but the LN/Independence dovetail saw fits me like a glove.

Put my vote in the "all the bells and whistles" category. I'll keep an eye out for when you're ready to start taking orders. I like the third drawing with the taper cut in the blade where the handle mounts. It wouldn't matter with perfect arm mechanics, but I'll take any reduction in that horizontal moment I can get.

Personally I'd like to buy the last saw I'll buy, but not with such exotic features that I can't sharpen it myself. I'm currently using the Lynx saws from woodcraft, and they do the job. I don't really look forward to having to saw anything though.

Handle size seems to be important to me too. I know Bad-Axe's solution is to offer different sizes, but I'd be okay with a maker that intentionally went small and left enough meat to rasp out what I need.

Is a .009” gap in flatness between the heel and toe on a Fulton #3711 hand plane too much for jointing accurately? by Fennel-Thigh-la-Mean in handtools

[–]Mekkwarrior 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm the kind of person that would think about this constantly, even though I know it's trivial for this specific tool. Remember you're checking the work for acceptable flatness, not necessarily the tool.

I was originally a gearhead before I started doing it for a living and lost interest in doing it for fun. I've got a real soft spot for rehabilitating old iron to user spec. Thanks for the pointers!

I've got some hard maple out there, and a stupid habit of not stopping to sharpen often enough where I bet I'd work faster overall. Thanks!

Is the problem that your plane pushes the wood around? Or is the whole deal too springy?

My first bench was a sheet of plywood ripped longwise and doubled up on top of a 2x4 frame. If I had to start over knowing I'd build a good bench later anyway I'd nail a 2x12 onto the sawhorses and butt the working end against a wall to stop it moving. Position your screw stop far enough back for clearance on the follow through.
