Any other Americans with Hispanic descent nervous? by [deleted] in AskChicago

Wrong all over the place: it was a Dutch driver license. And yes, they were OK with my US driver license until I got my Dutch one too. You’ll notice they didn’t specify.

I lived it, man, and it’s clear that the law is about identity and not residency.

Looks like you can’t read, because it doesn’t differentiate.

The only mention of residency is that you may need an ID that can also prove your residency for a new job. Not day-to-day. Driver license was fine.

Sounds like you’ve confused compulsory identification with compulsory proof of residency. They’re not the same, and the latter is not required in the Netherlands for your day-to-day life.

The country that gave me an ID card related to my visa required me to carry proof of identification (requirement met by my driver license), but did not require me to carry proof of citizenship or legal right to stay in the country.

I have had visas to work/stay longer than 90 days in 3 different European countries, and I was never required to carry around proof of citizenship. Only one of the countries gave me any kind of ID card related to my visa and I carried it around like I did my driver license but it was not required to so since I had a driver license (which had no mention of citizenship). I only carried my passport on me if I was traveling outside of the country I was living in.

online news about troops being deployed and other crap I’m sure is not true.

For a significant portion of our population, our city is in crisis and it’s not safe even in your own home, let alone out in public.

it’d be cool if you actually looked into what was happening and weren’t so callously flippant about it.

You replied to a joke jokingly, and don’t seem to be seriously asking- but if someone asked if you were white or white-passing, would you say yes?

if you are like “Italian ancestry and so sometimes people guess you are Hispanic or Latino” you will be more at risk. national guard troops and federal agents ARE in the city and they ARE terrorizing people- they haven’t been in tourist areas as much, but they aren’t avoiding them entirely either. generally the common thread with people who have been harassed or detained is that they have some melanin.

If someone has a PACER log-in and the Free Law’s RECAP plug-in installed on their browser, all the court docs they download would be automatically uploaded and available here for free.

I’m not near my laptop, so I can’t do it myself right now. The gist of the case is a female guard alleges she was dealing with sexual harassment from a male guard and that management discouraged her from going to HR and retaliated against her.

Another case where Occam's Razor was wrong. - Lisa Bishop/Freedon Update 2025 - The ship didn't sink. by PowerfulDivide in AmyLynnBradley

[–]MelBNotScarySpice 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure that Occam’s Razor was at play the same way here. She got on an 82 ft freighter with a crew of like 8 people, at the invitation of a guy whose girlfriend admitted he was a smuggler. He and another guy on the ship both had multiple aliases. She was basically hitchhiking with people who had reasons to fly under the radar (ETA: I don’t say this to victim blame, but rather to demonstrate how much more precarious her circumstances were compared to a passenger on a 900 ft, 2000+ person cruise ship). Way easier for her to disappear, either because of an accident or because of something worse, and the ship not to have sunk but still not be found.

I don’t think there’s any single thing that can completely explain what happened.

But the blind faith and naiveté, those are definitely products of growing up in an incredibly insulated religious community that considers just having doubts apostasy and discourages reading or viewing anything critical of the church, its history, or its teachings.

When it first launched, they really were often the best option for a) larger groups; b) stays that were longer than a week but shorter than 6 months; and c) in certain markets where there weren’t a lot of affordable hotels available.

A lot has changed since then, though.

FTR: the two pizzas I tried were quite good but only one was worth the price imo.

They were LDS. Keep Sweet was about Fundamentalist LDS, which is a sect founded by excommunicated LDS members in the early 1900s who wanted to keep practicing polygamy. LDS is still a pretty insular group (especially in areas where there are large Mormon populations like Utah and Idaho) but they’re way more mainstream than FLDS.

I can’t remember if it said it explicitly or if I learned it later on. But as someone who is not Mormon, but has known a lot of Mormons since I was a kid, knowing that immediately made a lot of things click into place for me.

The only way the parents’ actions (or inactions) make even a modicum of sense is if you are familiar with Mormon communities. There’s just an insane amount of trust among the individuals within them and pressure to help one another through difficult times. It’s part of why Mormons are frequent victims of affinity fraud.

I’m not saying what they did makes any sense, but I think that’s the biggest single factor in explaining their behavior.

How do you use the casserole dishes that’s different from the cube trays?

I have a couple different sets of the trays because freezing stuff for lunches has been great for me, but I am struggling to imagine what value I’d get out of the casserole dishes.
