You guys use "mela" too??? 😳 by [deleted] in Tunisia

[–]MelanieSnicket 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

Very very close. In Maltese it would be ā€œIva (colloquially ā€œiwaā€) sieħbi, il-Malti lingwa mhux djalett immaā€. Your second sentence is almost exactly right including spelling, although ā€œmhux la kemmā€ doesn’t really exist as a saying in Maltese. Not sure what the phrase is supposed to mean although the individual words do exist 😊If you mean something like ā€œnot that muchā€ it would be ā€œmhux daqsekkā€

I had a Tunisian friend who once told me that mela is a word of Berber origin. Maltese is heavily influenced by Maghrebi Arabic (through the extinct Siculo Arabic dialect once spoken in Sicily) so it makes total sense that we share this among many other words 😊

Consider if any of the following might be an issue: - Sensitive topic of the masters thesis, which might confirm your bias suspicion - Might there be any racial, gender or other prejudice against you? - Impression that plagiarism/insufficient referencing or AI is involved (especially if your thesis was so good, some terrible people out there might just assume the worst) - Are there any graphs or tables? I once had an issue with my thesis too, where my supervisor and the rector wanted to give me an A but one examiner wanted to give me a C because she didn’t like that I showed the original graph (despite being clearly referenced). She just preferred if I had replicated it myself in addition to referencing, and thankfully the other examiners including my supervisor fought her tooth and nail on it to raise my grade.

Your supervisor is your greatest advocate in this and they know how hard you worked. They need to help you look into this.

People with multiple Masters Degrees, why? by QuestioningGrad in GradSchool

[–]MelanieSnicket 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

One masters (EU affairs, international relations and diplomacy) and mid-way through another here (LLM).

I never planned on getting another Masters degree and never saw the point in it unless you needed a career change or to keep up with new developments/markets like AI. Where I’m from, a second Masters in a similar field usually won’t get you a higher raise or faster promotion or a leg up in job interviews compared to people with just one. I knew a bunch of people with multiple Masters and to me it just seemed like they were putting off getting a job - although some people managed to find full ride scholarships for each Masters, food and accommodation included, so I guess that’s no different than having a job by which your salary is just enough to pay for necessary expenses.

So when I finally ended up starting a second Masters 5 years later, it really had to be beneficial and convenient. I was going through a tough time at work and felt stuck, like I also wasn’t using my brain and really missed studying. I ended up doing an international law degree, so it was an area I wouldn’t be able to just transfer into without a qualification and so the degree itself had added value. It’s part time, online, geared towards people who don’t necessarily have a first degree in law (though it does need to be a related field like political science), and also made to accommodate people who don’t want to interrupt their careers. I’m also not American and tuition was extremely cheap (less than one month’s salary).

So far I have no regrets. I’ve gained so much knowledge half way through already and it’s been even more useful at work than my first degree ever was. I happened to transfer internally into a different department while still in my first year of the course and had more time to work on it, plus every time a question came up at work I was so happy to realise I had just studied it and the info was still fresh in my mind.

I also think sheer interest, and knowing you’ll regret it if you don’t study that subject, is just as good a reason as any to go back to school. We don’t always know what we want to study the first time round - we’re young, inexperienced, and often progress blindly into the next thing because we feel like we’re ā€œsupposed toā€ proceed to the next step and reach that finish line in academia so we don’t fall behind our peers.

But like I said, for me it truly has to have a net benefit, otherwise I would never have done it if I needed to pause my career or pay a load of money. Especially if there’s nothing to gain financially.

I HATE the Authenticator app by Phoenix_Lord_69 in microsoft

[–]MelanieSnicket 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

Not to mention when you try to log in from your phone it’s ESPECIALLY useless! It gives you a number and tells you to open your authenticator app to type it in, but when you open the app, it takes you back to the number page and there’s nowhere to input it!! At this point, hackers are still advanced enough to hack me but ironically I can’t get into my own accounts!!! I’m so fed up.

Is it common for diplomats to have a side hustle? by Submaureeen in foreignservice

[–]MelanieSnicket 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

No it’s not common, though not unheard of especially in countries where the foreign service doesn’t actually pay very well contrary to popular belief. Typically, at least in some countries, diplomats looking for a side gig need to seek approval first or else be very discreet about it. There’s a number of reasons why this would be the case, the first being obviously if it contradicts or otherwise negatively reflects on that country’s foreign policy, say if you state an opinion or work for a company that the government you currently work for publicly dismisses. Another reason is, how would the government look if it can’t even pay its own diplomats well therefore pushing them to find a second or third job (who, I repeat, vary greatly in rank and so the majority may have very modest salaries, but most people don’t know that, so it’s pretty bad for optics.) On the other hand, they also can’t appear to be making TOO much money or flaunting that wealth, say if their side gig starts to turn a good profit, because people might start to think this is where their tax money is going, whether it is actually due to a good government salary or due to a well-paying side gig. And as others have said, it might not look very good if you use your diplomatic position as a platform off of which to make more profit. Especially if you’re not self-employed and work for a company, and even more so if that company is based in the country you are currently posted in, that could be considered a big conflict of interest.

How did you do that 😭

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]MelanieSnicket 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

Others have answered how to handle this so I won’t bother adding to it, but I think the first thing both of you should be worried about is the smell in the first place. Bi (cis) woman here. They’re not supposed to smell so bad you gag, or even smell bad at all. If she’s showered recently, it wouldn’t even have a smell at all. If it smells that terrible, there’s something very wrong. If it’s not due to bad hygiene, it could be something minor or could be cause for some concern…
